Root domain or 'www' subdomain for campaigns?
-
I am setting up a campaign and I am unsure whether I should specify the root domain (prohibitionhats.co.nz) or the 'www' subdomain (www.prohibitionhats.co.nz).
Are there any guidelines for this or will Moz automatically aggregate the data for both irrespective of the domain you choose?
Thanks
Laurie

Hi Laurie,
I agree with Dana. I think that whatever you choose for your Google Webmaster tools & the rel="canonical" this is yours <link <span class="webkit-html-attribute-name">rel="canonical" href="http://www.prohibitionhats.co.nz" /</link <span>
Should show you the correct answer of if you should use subdomain if it exists or not
The correct answer can always be found by going to show source and using either command or control really using your PC or Mac along with the F button and then typing in rel="canonical"
You will find as I have what the correct link is for your website and wanted 301 redirects to or should 301 redirect to all the time. In your case it is this link below showing that you should use the subdomain www.
rel="canonical" href="http://www.prohibitionhats.co.nz" /
rel="canonical" href="" />
This is very important because this is where Google is going to send your links and your traffic if you pick the Google Webmaster tools and if it's 301 redirected it's where your links are going to go I hope I've been of help.
Sincerely,
Thomas

Hey there. Thanks for the answer. That sounds really logical to me.

This is a great question and one I wish that Moz would give new users more guidance on in the beginning. You should set up your campaign based on whichever version of your site you set as the "preferred" in Google Webmaster Tools. I set up my campaigns without knowing this and once I figured it out and wanted to transition over, I had already gathered nearly 8 months of data. All of this would have been "lost" (I say that because of course I would have anything I had exported), if I had try to change my campaign from the "non WWW" to the "WWW" version mid stream.
Basically if you decide to change from one to the other, you have to set up a completely new campaign, and there won't be any continuity (outside of anything you manually do using Excel, etc).
P.S. I would welcome feedback on my comments from the Moz community. I am hoping what I said was 100% accurate.

What's the best way to switch a campaign from sub-domain tracking to root domain tracking?
I realized after the fact that one of my campaigns also has a mobile website sub-domain that I'd like to track (ex: http://m.website.com). How can I switch this campaign over to root domain tracking without deleting everything and starting over?

How do we change our domain settings for a changed domain?
We have changed the primary domain for an existing campaign we are tracking with SEOMOZ. How do we update the NEW domain name for our campaign so that we can maintain the existing set of data? We just want to change the URL that SEOMOZ is crawling. We have already updated the Google Analytics settings, so they should be consistent with SEOMOZ once we get the URL updated with you.

Your opinion on this opportunity's difficulty?
I'm building a tool for mechanical engineers, and I'm trying to find 10 low-competition keywords to target in my first few content marketing efforts. I've got a lot of maneuvering room, so (with a bit of expert advice) I bet I'll be able to find some low-hanging fruit. Here's what I've found: Most keywords are seem to have about 40% difficulty. What's the highest level of SEOmoz "keyword difficulty" that a new website should reasonably try for? Some ranking high-authority pages are don't appear to be targeted at the term Is it fair to say that I could beat any page with less than a 'C' ranking for on-page optimization? (Assuming I target the term with general best practices)* Thanks! If you're interested, here is my current process: Go on engineering blogs for keywords Use Wordstream's Keyword Suggestion Tool for ideas around it Use Google Keyword Tools for keywords above 50 searches in direct match Use SEOmoz Keyword difficulty report, looking more deeply at keywords under <50% If I can find a top 10 page that's less than 30PA and less than 40DA, or has less than 'C' ranking for on-page optimization, I consider the keyword achievable within 3mo, using general best practices. *Except for YouTube/Wikipedia/etc

Domain Name Portfolio Management?
I am looking for some software, or an excel spreadsheet, or some way to manage 50-100 domain names. Maybe something a reseller of domain names would use? Something that keeps record of different whois information for different domain names, tracks IPs, nameservers, FTP logins, etc... I think excel would be best for this if there was a way to have the expiration date pulled so I dont forget to renew a domain name by mistake, and so I can easily keep track of them all in one place. I have seen a couple software programs out there for this, but none really meet all the needs I have. I also looked into some kinda database software with a nice GUI (MS Access, or FileMakerPro) but I dont know them software well. Any Ideas?
