Dealing with spelling variations
-
Hi, my site is a directory for restaurants seen on TV. The two most popular shows, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Man v. Food often are searched for by a number of different variations. Diners DriveIns Dives, Diners, Drive Ins Dives, Man v Food, man versus food, etc.
Should my site consistently use a single variation (the official one) or intentionally use multiple variations to cover various keywords? I'm pretty sure the answer is a single variation but figured it was worth asking.

We deal with a similar issue. However, what makes it interestingly complex is that our branch and audience is B2B.
Besides being very important to know which variations has more traffic volume, it seems that a single/plural variation can have in the background different queries' needs or origins.
For example between "payment services" and "payment service", there seems to be no difference and of course as the previous mozers comment, Google is intelligent enough to present results regardless of the spelling.
However, "payment service" could be (and tends to be) a B2C query. Usually referring to a specific service, i.e. "jc penney payment service". That is of course not relevant for us.
In conclusion, I would recommend to also have a look at the content's type and context that the different variations trigger.

I would err on the side of using the right name. Google and Bing will figure it out. And the grammar police won't arrest you. Trust me, they are annoying. Go for right, please.

Although Google is smart enough to figure out synonyms in many cases, it's still good practice to mix up your keywords on your page with different variations. This is a better experience for the user as well, since the content will be less repetitive.
Look at the search volumes for the various keyword variations, and see which variations are being used the most. If there are a couple variations that get used a lot, it may make sense to create pages on your site which each focus on a single variation.

How to deal with rel=canonical when using POST parameters
Hi there,
On-Page Optimization | | mjk26
I currently have a number of URLs throughout my site of the form: https://www.concerthotels.com/venue-hotels/o2-academy-islington-hotels/256133#checkin_4-21-2024&checkout_4-22-2024&rooms_1&guests_2&artistid_15878:256133 This sends the user through to a page showing hotels near the O2 Academy Islington. Once the page loads, my code looks at the parameters specified in the # part of the URL, and uses them to fill in a form, before submitting the form as a POST. This basically reloads the page, but checks the availability of the hotels first, and therefore returns slightly different content to the "canonical" version of this page (which simply lists the hotels before any availability checks done). Until now, I've marked the page that has had availability checks as noindex, follow. But because the form was submitted with POST parameters, the URL looks exactly like the canonical one. So the two URLs are identical, but due to POST parameters, the content is slightly different. Does that make sense? My question is, should both versions of this page be marked as index, follow? Thanks

What is the best way to deal with creating a separate brand with it's own website when the main site already ranks well for the target keywords?
A client currently has a site that ranks well for a number of queries. They recently created a new site for a spin-off brand/company that they now want to focus on ranking for some of the keywords their original site already ranked for. What would be the best way to go about this without throwing away the existing authority and traffic the original site has for those queries?

How to deal with duplicate content when presenting event and sub-events information?
Hi, I'm have a sport event calendar website.
On-Page Optimization | | ahotu
It presents events that may have multiple races.
The event has its own page as well as the races. example :
Event: /event/edinburgh-marathon-festival Races:
/race/emf-half-marathon
/race/emf-10-km
/race/edinburgh-marathon
/race/emf-5-km The pages may have a lot of information in common (location, date, description) and they all link to each other.
What would be the best practices to avoid having the pages considered duplicate content by Google? Thanks0 -
Duplicate pages and slight product variations
Hi, I'm new here, first post... I've started working on an existing Magento website which is selling furniture. There are products such as leather dining chairs which have very detailed product descriptions. The problem is that there is separate a page for every colour the chair comes in (with exactly the same on-page text), so the page is effectively duplicated 5 times, one for red, one for blue etc... This is made even worse by the fact that the website builder has listed the products in multiple different categories. This means that the same basic product description is in use on maybe 20 or so pages. How would you guys deal with product descriptions for multiple, very similar products where only the colour is different? There's also the problem of very similar title tags etc... Thanks for any help. Very much appreciated.

Should State names be abbreviated and/or fully spelled out in title tags, meta descriptions and body content? Does Google know that VT = Vermont?

Is creating lots of sub product pages with some variation a good idea?
I have a service for quote comparison for web design, graphic design etc. My main sales page is http://www.designquotes.com.au/compare-quotes I am thinking of creating 20 or so product specific pages such as this: http://www.designquotes.com.au/business-card-design-stationary-quotes Additional pages such as CMS Wbe Design eCommerce Web Design Logo Desing etc Some of the content is repeat, the main content that changes is in the content slider at the bottom. Is this a good idea, or should I be creating more high quality content like the one below? Will the page be considered low quality or get duplicate content penalties? http://www.designquotes.com.au/web-design-buyers-guide

Continuous variation of a keyword
Lords, on a site i have optimization job, a specific keyword, for over 5 months, ranging from 7 to +100 position. One day the keyword is there, beautiful on the first page, and another day disappear. I do not understand why this happens, someone has something happened? I can not stabilize it, and is one of the most important for this client. I live in tension, in the morning the first thing I do is search to see whether the keyword is. Obviously it did in the first 2 months, then relaxed as she always comes back : ) Anyone have any idea what might be happening?

How would you deal with eCommerce sorts?
I am reviewing a website that has different activities, and there are many ways to sort them. The issue is that the website is essentially displaying the same information, but in different sorts. Take a look at this search page: http://www.kijubi.com/AC-Fishing You are looking for fishing trips here, but you can sort it by city, region, and category. I have decided to "no index" some of these sorts, but I am afraid they might be picking up some long tail traffic on the city and region sorts. For example, "newport beach fishing trips", something like that. Any suggestions on how to deal with removing all of these duplicate sorts, while still maintaining the traffic that may be received by sorting with some long tail terms?
