How do crawl errors from SEOmoz tool set effect rankings?
-
Hello -
The other day I presented the crawl diagnostic report to a client. We identified duplicate page title errors, missing meta description errors, and duplicate content errors.
After reviewing the report we presented it to the clients web company who operates a closed source CMS. Their response was that these errors are not worthy of fixing and in fact they are not hurting the site.
We are having issues getting the errors fixed and I would like your opinion on this matter.
My question is, how bad are these errors? Should we not fix them? Should they be fixed? Will fixing the errors have an impact on our site's rankings?
Personally, I think the question is silly. I mean, the errors were found using the SEOmoz tool kit, these errors have to be effecting SEO.....right?
The attached image is the result of the Crawl Diagnostics that crawled 1,400 pages.
NOTE: Most of the errors are coming from Pages like
blog/archive/2011-07/page-2
/blog/category/xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxxx/page-2
testimonials/147/xxxxx--xxxxx
(xxxx represents information unique to the client)
Thanks for your insight!

Ultimately, the client is paying you for SEO advice, you are providing advice and they are not acting upon it. Explain to them that whilst non of these issues are massive factors, to be able to provide the best possible advice you need to remove the common errors and be working from a solid standpoint.
I like the quality metric - if a site has these daft problems, then it's quality is lower and it's chance of hitting a threshold for a problem is more likely. If the duplication of pages / titles becomes rampant, then we get closer to a panda type problem.
Simply put, to rank as well as possible, we do everything we can and taking care of the smaller details is an important part of this job so you can do your job properly knowing you are not being held back by simple, easy to fix issues.

Hi Gabriel,
i believe that Google can handle missing meta descriptions relatively well and will read the page content to create one, however you will miss out on personalizing them to boost click through rates.
I would prioritize fixing the duplicated page titles and content over everything else, even then i don't believe it will make a huge difference as i removed about 2000 errors and warnings from my site a while back and i haven't seen a huge change in traffic or rankings.

Thanks Cornel!
Trust me, I tried to send this guy all the links that I could find. They keep saying, "Look at our rankings under this keyword....we don't need to fix the errors, you can rank with them."
What do you think? How important are the duplicate title & missing meta description errors? Is this a top priority thing? Or, is it ok to let them slide.
Of course my view is to fix them. I think BING penalizes for on page errors more thanGoogle does.
Thoughts?

Errors In Search Console
Hi All, I am hoping someone might be able to help with this. Last week one of my sites dropped from mid first day to bottom of page 1. We had not been link building as such and it only seems to of affected a single search term and the ranking page (which happens to be the home page). When I was going through everything I went to search console and in crawl errors there are 2 errors that showed up as detected 3 days before the drop. These are: wp-admin/admin-ajax.php showing as response code 400 and also xmlrpc.php showing as response code 405 robots.txt is as follows: user-agent: * disallow: /wp-admin/ allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php Any help with what is wrong here and how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks

Strange Crawl Report
Hey Moz Squad, So I have kind of strange case. My website locksmithplusinc.com has been around for a couple years. I have had all sorts of pages and blogs that have maybe ranked for a certain location a longtime ago and got deleted so I could speed up the site and consolidate my efforts. I said that because I think that might be part of the problem. When I was crawl reporting my site just three weeks ago on moz I had over 23 crawl report issues. Duplicate pages, missing meta tags the regular stuff. But now all of a sudden when I crawl report on MOZ it comes up with Zero issues. So I did another crawl On google analytic and this is what came up. SO im very confused because none of these url's are even url's on my site. So maybe people are searching for this stuff and clicking on broken links that are still indexed and getting this 404 error? What do you guys think? Thank you guys so much for taking a shot at this one. siS44ug

Yoast SEO. After set up 404 error pages
Hello all, Something strange happened with my blog site. I recently signed to MOZ tools. Initially everything was fine, but during my last crawl I got loads of 404
Technical SEO | | A_Fotografy
pages. Few days ago I was tweaking some settings in SEO plugin according to this post https://moz.com/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success What I noticed was that 404 pages were coming from my blog posts, but for
some reason category was missing in those posts. For example this link is 404
https://a-fotografy.co.uk/inchcolm-island-wedding-photography-bailie The one with category is https://a-fotografy.co.uk/wedding-pictures/inchcolm-island-wedding-photography-bailie/ So basically for some reason category was missing. Please let me know how can I fix this instead of doing hundreds of
redirects now. Thank you,
Regards,

Good organic ranking/Poor local ranking
Hi, I am a local retailer with a physical store in a major US City. My website is very well ranked on major keywords related to my business from an organic result perspective (between 1st and 3rd spot). However, in terms of local results (google place), my website isn't even ranked (except for one specific long tail keyword). Anybody know why? Thank you so much for your help. This is driving me crazy:-)

Ranking in Bing
My frustration with Google currently has led me to try bing out more. I don't rank as good in bing as Google, so I was wondering if anyone had any great tips of what bing looks for to rank website well? So far I can see they seem to favour keyword domains, take 'cheap holidays' for example. Always reading about what Google want but what do bing want? Any advice much appreciated.

Fixing Crawl Errors
Hi! I moved my Wordpress blog back in August, and lost much of my site traffic. I recently found over 1000 crawl errors in Webmaster Tools because some of my redirects weren't transferred, so we are working on fixing the errors and letting Google know. I'm wondering how long I should expect for Google to recognize that the errors have been fixed and for the traffic to start returning? Thanks! Jodi - momsfavoritestuff.com

Webmaster Tools 404 Errors Pages Never Created
Recently, 196 404 errors appeared in my WMT account for pages that were never created on my site. Question: Any thoughts on how they got there (i.e. WMT bug, tactic by competitor)? Question: Thoughts on impact if any? Question: Thoughts on resolution?

What should I set my domain setting to?
In Google Wemnaster tools, I have the option to set it to either have as default the "www" or without it. What are the pros and cons of one way or the other . . . or is this a way more complicated question/can of worms I have opened?
