What is a reasonable time frame to get to the 1st page

If my site is not in the first 50 results and the keywords are medium to highly competitive?
I have just started adding to directories, planning out a blog, fixing seo mistakes, updating sitemaps etc.
The 1st ranking competitor has external links in the tens of thousands whereas I have maybe a few hundred. I see a light at the end of the tunnel as competing sites in between me and the 1st place ranking competitor have external links only in the 1000-2000 level.
We are an ecommerce site and want to be ready for our high season which is Nov-Jan.

This should work in your favour. Your site will have built up some natural trust and authority over the years without any SEO focus, so if you're making the effort to make the right changes now you should have a smoother ride than a brand new site.
Best of luck

Adding on to what has been said already, you can't assume that your competitors are going to be standing still while you work on your SEO. To move up you have to be throwing more at it then they are, which is very difficult to measure.

Thank you for the responses... just wanted to add that our site has been up for 2 years but has not been seo optimized.

Google doesn't really sandbox sites anymore. It's quite possible (if unlikely) that a new site can rank well right out of the gate and stay there. More than likely, however, is that your site will fall to other well ranked and established sites.
As to a time frame, it typically takes a couple of months for Google to spider new links and even longer for them to give you rank. I tell people not to expect real results for at least 6 months. SEO is a long ball game, not a game of checkers.

Hi,
It's not the answer you were looking for, but there really is no specific timescale to achieving rankings.
It depends on so many factors, such as competitiveness of your industry and the existing trust your website has established (is it a brand new site or a refresh of an existing domain?)
Google infamous 'sandbox' tends to prevent new sites achieving major rankings for 2-6 months, but again this can be very industry dependant.
It's entirely possible to achieve front page rankings in the timescale you are talking about, but there is in no way a fixed formula and there are so many contributing factors outside of the number of links you have.
Speaking of which, pumping your site into directories isn't going to be the answer to getting you the rankings you want. Directories tend to give you a minimal SEO value at best, however the majority are totally ineffective. Remember if earning rankings was as simple as submitting your site to 1000's of directories then everyone would be doing it and the playing field would be void.
The time you are spending submitting to directories should be spent earning yourself a few editorial links from genuine industry sources. These will be of much more value to your business.
Good luck with your new site!

Out of Stock page ranking
When a competitive site is consistently ranking for a product that is never in stock, or in some cases, has been discontinued for several years and will never again be in stock, is there a way to communicate that information to Google?

Predicting Time For Results
Hi Mozzers. My company uses an SEO agency. They are building links from relevant sites but, since hiring them around 9 months ago our SERPs for our important search terms have remained pretty static (dropping slightly). I'm in charge of my company's marketing budget so need to make decisions about ROI when determining where best to invest my resources. It seems to me that it ought to be possible to predict (with a fair degree of accuracy) how long it's likely to take us to move up the SERPs based upon an analysis of our website, link profile and how it's changing over time vs those of our competitors. Unfortunately my SEO agency keeps dodging this question. Am I being unreasonable in expecting this? Is what I've described above even possible? If it is possible what are the factors you would consider when trying to make such a prediction? Thanks for your help David

Open Site Explorer is not showing dmT. Where do I go to get this metric.
Just trying to understand the video I watched on Link Building w/ Open Site Explorer. I'm not seeing the dmT metric in the live version. Has it been replaced by something else. Or is there someplace else I need to look for it?

How is this page ranking so high?
I have been using OSE, and I have come across a few sites that rank within the top 5 for VERY competitive keywords and seem to have NO inbound links to the page. Am I overlooking something? For example, Keyword: floor lamps Page: www.lampsplus.com/products/floor-lamps/

What sould I focus on to get over the top of my competors ?
Ok, I've been on this site for approximately one week now. There is a lot of good information but quite honestly, I don't know where to shoot at first in getting a better ranking against my competitors I have done pretty much everything on my web site to optimize, but I don't get at all the ranking close to my competition. They don't have as much content as we have other than they have been doing SEO for much longer time. I have worked a lot on the content optimization of our site, I get pretty much good result on some of the keywords, registered my site to google, bing , yahoo, I'm using the site map, configured the robot.txt, on-page metatag, URL canonical, clean-ur, H1 H2 tags, etc etc. Ho, And I just got today the approval of Yahoo Directory Listing. It's not sill showing up, but I guess it will come. You will find attached the output of 2 of my competitors and Us. They both rank very well on the keyword we are interested. Where should I start ? I know the Links Juice i important, but how can I workout my strategy to defeat them. Any help would be appreciated. Best regards, h837v

Where are the best places online to build powerful profile pages
So on SEOmoz you can create a profile page with followed links (after 200 points), just as you can do on Google Profiles. I'd like to build a strong backlink profile which features some of these highest links that my competitors will not have the time or effort to do. I'm working hard to answer questions on SEOmoz and to be a helpful part of the community, and have published some Google Knols for the Google profile building. My question is; are there any other sites that allow the same type of responsible profile building, preferably SEO related as this is my area of expertise. Thanks Aaron Solar Monster Ltd
