Duplicate Page Content - Shopify

Moz reports that there are 1,600+ pages on my site (Sportiqe.com) that qualify as Duplicate Page Content. The website sells licensed apparel, causing shirts to go into multiple categories (ie - LA Lakers shirts would be categorized in three areas: Men's Shirts, LA Lakers Shirts and NBA Shirts)It looks like "tags" are the primary cause behind the duplicate content issues: // Collection Tags_Example: : http://www.sportiqe.com/collections/la-clippers-shirts (Preferred URL): http://www.sportiqe.com/collections/la-clippers-shirts/la-clippers (URL w/ tag): http://sportiqe.com/collections/la-clippers-shirts/la-clippers (URL w/ tag, w/o the www.): http://sportiqe.com/collections/all-products/clippers (Different collection, w/ tag and same content)// Blog Tags_Example: : http://www.sportiqe.com/blogs/sportiqe/7902801-dispatch-is-back: http://www.sportiqe.com/blogs/sportiqe/tagged/elias-fundWould it make sense to do 301 redirects for the collection tags and use the Parameter Tool in Webmaster Tools to exclude blog post tags from their crawl? Or, is there a possible solution with the rel=cannonical tag?Appreciate any insight from fellow Shopify users and the Moz community.

Hello Chris,
I saw that Brett added rel="canonical" to his product template in shopify but wouldn't that tell Google not to look at all the products now? (ignore them) What if you want the images and the content of your product pages indexed by Google and showing up in results?

As I mentioned I'm still playing with it.
But as far as I can see, BigCommerce has a better solution (or at least handle the URLs better).Without getting into my store, I also have on my site many "collections" - special offers, recommended, etc etc.
The link to the product page is always the same link. It doesn't make sense to link to "store.com/special-offers/product" and then canonical it to "store.com/product"
Which is what Shopify does... After discussing with them on those matters the answers were that everything can be changed but it might be complicated.

according to these, they will always show as duplicate in the report (but won't count against you in your search engine results).

Thanks Chris! I'm hoping that the issue falls under the Fixing Crawl Diagnostic Issues, in which case it sounds like there is no issue. But the Rogerbot answer confuses me, because Roger shouldn't count the canonical version of the page as duplicate content (which is the case)?

From the issue you described, the rel=canonical is still the right choice.
According to Moz Documentation on Fixing Crawl DIagnostic Issues: "Keep in mind that that canonicals will stop the pages from ranking against each other, but they will still show up as duplicate content from a UI perspective, so we will still count them as duplicate."
Also from Moz documentation on How does Rogerbot calculate duplicate content?: "Two documents are considered duplicates if they have a 95% overlap. Furthermore, we should not count duplicates across pages that specify one or the other as the canonical version. The canonical version should not recognize the other as a duplicate, and the other version should not recognize the canonical as a duplicate."

Chris, taking your advice I added this code into my Shopify theme:

{% endif %}{% endif %}
This code was added July 9th, exactly two weeks ago and I haven't seen the Duplicate Content issue decrease at all according to the Moz Campaign tools. Does it typically take this long to see an impact?
Should I reconsider doing 301 redirects for all my t-shirt collections? Thanks for your advice. (If useful, I also found this article discussing duplicate content on Shopify with a rel=canonical solution.)

What's your store URL, and how would you suggest we categorize our shirts?
It's typical for apparel companies to have a shirt that fits into a gender category, as well as a collection category.

Hi Brett,
I'm new to Shopify and still playing with it. While I agree with Chris here, I believe that you may have organized your products / product collections badly on Shopify. Ideally, the links will always take you to the same location. Having the same product on many different URLs (even with canonical) is not a good solution.

Brett, this looks like the perfect application for rel=canonical--and in your description of the item be sure to use vocabulary that deals with all three of the categories.

How to avoid duplicate content
Hi there, Our client has an ecommerce website, their products are also showing on an aggregator website (aka on a comparison website where multiple vendors are showing their products). On the aggregator website the same photos, titles and product descriptions are showing. Now with building their new website, how can we avoid such duplicate content? Or does Google even care in this case? I have read that we could show more product information on their ecommerce website and less details on the aggregator's website. How would you handle this duplicate content - noindex or canonical?
Hello Just trying look at how best to deal with this duplicated content. On our Canada holidays page we have a number of holidays listed (PAGE A)

From a user perspective, people expect to see all holidays in Canada (PAGE A), including the Arctic based ones. We can tag these to appear on both, however it will mean that the PAGE B content will be duplicated on PAGE A. Would it be the best idea to set up a canonical link tag to stop this duplicate content causing an issue. Alternatively would it be best to no index PAGE A? Interested to see others thoughts. Best Way to Incorporate FAQs into Every Page - Duplicate Content?
Hi Mozzers, We want to incorporate a 'Dictionary' of terms onto quite a few pages on our site, similar to an FAQ system. The 'Dictionary' has 285 terms in it, with about 1 sentence of content for each one (approximately 5,000 words total). The content is unique to our site and not keyword stuffed, but I am unsure what Google will think about us having all this shared content on these pages. I have a few ideas about how we can build this, but my higher-ups really want the entire dictionary on every page. Thoughts? Duplicate Page Content Issues Reported in Moz Crawl Report
Hi all, We have a lot of 'Duplicate Page Content' issues being reported on the Moz Crawl Report and I am trying to 'get to the bottom' of why they are deemed as errors... This page; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/about-us/job-opportunities/ has (admittedly) very little content and is duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-deals/cruise-line-deals/explorer-of-the-seas-2015/ This page is basically an image and has just a couple of lines of static content. Also duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-lines/costa-cruises/costa-voyager/ This page relates to a single cruise ship and again has minimal content... Also duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/faq/packing/ This is an FAQ page again with only a few lines of content... Also duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-deals/cruise-line-deals/exclusive-canada-&-alaska-cruisetour/ Another page that just features an image and NO content... Also duplicated with; http://www.bolsovercruiseclub.com/cruise-deals/cruise-line-deals/free-upgrades-on-cunard-2014-&-2015/?page_number=6 A cruise deals page that has a little bit of static content and a lot of dynamic content (which I suspect isn't crawled) So my question is, is the duplicate content issued caused by the fact that each page has 'thin' or no content? If that is the case then I assume the simple fix is to increase add \ increase the content? I realise that I may have answered my own question but my brain is 'pickled' at the moment and so I guess I am just seeking assurances! 🙂 Thanks Andy

How do I use public content without being penalized for duplication?
The NHTSA produces a list of all recalls for automobiles. In their "terms of use" it states that the information can be copied. I want to add that to our site, so there is an up-to-date list for our audience to see. However, I'm just copying and pasting. I'm allowed to according to NHTSA, but google will probably flag it right? Is there a way to do this without being penalized? Thanks, Ruben

Noindex Valuable duplicate content?
How could duplicate content be valuable and why question no indexing it? My new client has a clever african safari route builder that you can use to plan your safari. The result is 100's of pages that have different routes. Each page inevitably has overlapping content / destination descriptions. see link examples. To the point - I think it is foolish to noindex something like this. Duplicate content ramifications for country TLDs
We have a .com site here in the US that is ranking well for targeted phrases. The client is expanding its sales force into India and South Africa. They want to duplicate the site entirely, twice. Once for each country. I'm not well-versed in international SEO. Will this cause a duplicate content filter? Would google.co.in and google.co.za look at google.com's index for duplication? Thanks.
