One Keyword Penalty
-
Hi There,
Quick question for everyone. Is it possible to get penalized a keyword level not page level. I have a site that only seems to be penalized on one keyword which is currently at page 22, whilst the rest are on page 1 or page 2.
I came to the site late so I have no idea when the site lost its ranking for this keyword after a site redesign but the onpage is almost the same.
Kind Regards
Neil

I've seen keyword specific penalties applied when people have been overzealous in linking with specific link text too often. Lesson: vary your link text.

Yes, it's absolutely possible to lose rankings on specific keywords while other keywords continue to do well.
I have a client who lost massive rankings and impressions for a couple of specific head terms as a result of the Penguin update, but other very closely related longer tail version of the same phrase actually improved. This is basically a case of the algorithm determining that a site may not have appropriate content for the broader, more general term. Is the term that is at 22 a shorter, more general keyword phrase?
Keep in mind that these are not "penalties" unless you have received a warning in Google Webmaster Tools. These are just overall algorithm adjustments that have affected you specifically.
As always, the important concern here is not so much with rankings, it's with conversion. Have you assessed whether the term that dropped was actually bringing significant conversions? If it was, you'll want to work on some new content and link-building to try to get some of that traffic back. If it wasn't, then the traffic didn't have much value anyway and the issue can be ignored.
Rankings and traffic only indicate potential value - only conversions can determine true value.

Drop in keyword rankings with a multi-region website
Hi everyone, I know that variations if this question have been asked on this forum and have been answered by Google also. Google's response seems to be clear that "Websites that provide content for different regions and in different languages sometimes create content that is the same or similar but available on different URLs. This is generally not a problem as long as the content is for different users in different countries." This was our approach when launching a new .co.nz website recently to coincide with us opening a new office in Auckland. Our original site is still our .com.au site. We went with a new domain name over a sub directory or sub domain for the reasons in the same Google article. After launching the NZ site in February and steadily growing some rankings, we've noticed in the last week or so a drastic drop in our keyword rankings (and traffic) for no apparent reason. There are no apparent issues in Search Console or with the Moz Site Crawl, so I'm wondering what's going on? I know rankings can fluctuate widely, especially when you're not on page 1 (which we're not) but the sudden and drastic drop did concern me. Currently, our AUS site's content is basically being replicated on the NZ site (e.g. blog posts, about us, company history, etc.). I just wanted to bounce it off you all to see whether you think it could be the "duplicate content" on the NZ site, or could it be something else? I'd really appreciate your input! Cheers, Nathan

Domain stuck at end of SERPs for main keywords
I'm trying to figure out why a site has been stuck at the end of the SERPs for almost a year. On August 5, 2011 the site went from getting 1,400 visits per day from Google down to 20 visits a day from Google. For the keywords it ranked on the first page for it went to the last page in the SERPs. With Panda and Penguin, it probably wouldn't rank like it used to, but it seems to be stuck in some sort of domain wide penalty that pins it to the end of the SERPs. Even when completely new content will show up at the end of the SERPs, which makes me think it's stuck in some sort of filter. Thanks in advance for any constructive ideas. Website isn't Ranking for Any Keyword
Hi, I launched a playhouses website in april this year and have been steadily link building to it over the past few months. I have gotten all of the internal optimisation correct (that I can see) however it is still not ranking for any keyword and suprinsgly all of our traffic is comming either direct or through bing. The website is showing as being in googles index however it is still not ranking for even the smallest of niche keywords. The only penalty I can see is that we have some spammy blog links that my colleague has gotten which I have been trying to counteract with high quality guest blogging. Any input is welcome the url is http://www.playhouses.co.uk/ Simon

Local results without geotargeted keywords
i'm trying to rank the site appliance-repair-ny.com for the New York City area. I managed to have the site rank pretty good (the site is less than 6 months old) for keyphrases with NYC, New York and Manhattan but i don't understand how to get the site rank higher for the ones without those keywords. For example: Appliance repair NYC - rank 1 Appliance Repair New york - rank 4 Appliance repair (without location) not in results Anyone can help me please? 🙂 Thanks!
