NAP - effect of adding a word to the name of businesss
-
Hello,
I'm faced with a decision which requires some feedback from experts like you.
My client has a business which has inconsistent citation submissions out the ying yang. For examples sake their business is called "brand all types body repair", where "brand" is the parent company who owns my client's company, and "all types body repair" is my client's company.
In most of their existing citations the phone number and address are all consistent, but some citations contain the name "brand all types body repair", and others just "all types body repair".
The name used on their website's NAP is "all types body repair"; however the name used on the larger directories like the BBB and yellow pages is "brand all types body repair". Also since they are registered in the BBB as this, "brand all types body repair" is their legal business name.
Since they are registered in the BBB as "brand all types body repair" my thoughts are to ensure every citation uses this as the name.
Three questions come out of this:
-
I'm not really changing the name, only adding a brand word in front of the existing name. Will this have less of an effect than changing the name completely?
-
If I change the name on their website from "all types body repair" to "brand all types body repair", will that have a negative affect on search rankings if some of the citations are already using "brand all types body repair"?
-
What would you do about the name issue?

Hi Steve,
So glad my reply was helpful. Good for you for getting the NAP into compliance. You've done your client a major service.
-
Hey Miriam,
Thanks for the response!
I ended up correcting all the business directories to the legal name and yes my rankings did drop; however they seem to have levelled out and now hopefully they will start increasing again.

Hi Steve,
You need to go with whatever the legal business name or DBA is and then correct all citations to match this. It can be a lot of work, but considering that the recent David Mihm's Local Search Ranking Factors 2013 lists consistency of structured citations as the #3 ranking factor, this is about as important as anything can be!
You may need to re-verify some listings (particularly the Google+ Local listing) with the naming change, and yes, there may be a bit of a drop, but if you can get all citations into compliance, it should be uphill from there. I'd look at it this way: right now, the business is in a negative situation with citation inconsistency issues that, if fixed, could yield better future results for them.
Good luck with the work ahead!

Old brand name being suffixed on Google SERP listings
At the end of some of our listings in Google search results pages, our old brand name is being suffixed even though it is not in our title tags. For context, we re-branded several months ago, and at that time also migrated to a new domain name. Our title tags have our current brand name suffixed, like "Shop Example Category | Example©". In the Google search results, but not in Bing nor Yahoo, about half of our pages have titles whcih instead look like this: "Shop Example Category | Example© - oldBrandName". The "dash" and the old brand name are not in our title tags, but they are being appended, even when our title tags are fairly long. For example, even with titles at 54 characters (421 pixels), the suffix is being appended. BUT, not with our longer title tags. We are actually OK with the brand name being appended if our title tags are on the shorter side, but would prefer that our current brand name be appended instead of the older one. I realize we could increase the length of all our title tags, and perhaps we may go that route. But, does anyone know where Google would be getting the old brand name to append onto the URLs? We've checked and it is not in our page source (the old brand name is used in our page source in some areas of text and some url paths, but not in any kind of meta tag). Per Google's guidance (https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-do-not-put-organization-schema-markup-on-every-page/289981/) we only have schema for the "Organization" on our home page, and not on every page. So, assuming this advice is correct to not add schema to every page, how can we inform Google of our current brand name so that it stops appending our old brand name on pages?

How many 7000 word articles before we should launch
We are in a standard wide niche, my website composes so far of one 7000 word article on spiritual awakening. I have 14 more articles sketched, on various related topics, each 5000-15000 words per article, targething main keywords in the niche. I am qualified to tie the whole niche together and draw new meaning but it takes in debth length. The question is how many 5K-15K page articles would you recommend polishing before launching the thing. Everything is launched, hid from the search engines, and I need to know how many articles to publish before I let the search engines look at my site. Looking for the best thing for long term growth. Thanks.

Do Local Search Efforts (Citations, NAP, Reviews) have an impact on traditional organic search listings (without the A, B, C mapping icons), but rather the traditional listings?
Are citations, NAP, Reviews, and other local search efforts impact traditional SEO listings? Can one elaborate?

The SEO effect of adding a front page to a website?
I have a client that wants to add a front page to a website so that when a user visitors the site for the first time a full page advert/message/page appears before they enter the site. The client wants this to be cookie controlled so they only see this on the first visit to the website. I am concerned that even if I put links to a sitemap or xml sitemap on this page that it will affect how well the site performs in search engines. Any ideas/suggestions or experiences? I found an interesting page on Quora about using pop ups.... Anyone who comments can you link to some good research and a clear simple explanation I can use to explain to the client why this is a bad idea..... https://www.quora.com/Search-Engine-Optimization-SEO/How-would-a-pop-up-ad-on-a-websites-home-page-affect-SEO And for the record I tried the usability argument....

Title 3 URL 1 Meta Desc 5 H1 3 H2-4 1 Body 83 B / Strong 1 IMG ALT 11 Total Keyword Usage for this Page = 108How could i restructure meta tags and descriptions to still rank for these terms but reduce the level the word towels?
