Mobile SEO vs. Usability - SinglePlatform
-
I have a restaurant client that we're setting up with SinglePlatform.com to distribute their menu and make sure all of the restaurant sites have updated information for their business. As part of SinglePlatform's service, they offer a mobile site. Normally we would just create a mobile site and make sure that it's optimized but this client isn't ready to invest in a customized mobile site yet. The mobile site we can get with SinglePlatform is very simple. Call, Menu, Address, View Full Website, Photos, General Info.
I know this would make it much easier for mobile users to find information and contact them but it's not mobile best practices. Whatever main page they land on would redirect them to the home page of the mobile site (i.e. not a 1 to 1). We also won't have any Google Analytics information for this site.
The question comes down to usability or SEO? I'm leaning toward the mobile site for now and sell them on a customized solution later. I guess I'm just looking for some verification or any insight.

Yes, I think it's a must for them now as their current site is almost unusable on a phone. The main issue with the mobile site and Google's stance are the faulty redirects. I believe everything redirects to the mobile home page right now. It may not be a huge deal right now because they have limited content but it's something we'll have to address.
The mobile site currently can be indexed by Google as well, which is an issue.

In this case, especially, usability = SEO. Mobile for restaurants is extremely important. People like to use the sitelinks to go directly to a menu or directions.
Sounds like you're aware of Google's stance on the subject.
I'm not familiar w/ SinglePlatform- but I'd think they are addressing or will have to address this soon.

Jared,
With any SMB you have to straddle the line between best practices and budget. I would not build a mobile site even when they are ready, but would go responsive as that IMO is the best practice. Given they do not have the wherewithal to do more site building, this looks like a workable solution.
I am surprised they cannot provide traffic metrics, etc.
One thing, make sure the phone number they use is the same as the NAP for the business. Do not let them use a tracking number unless that number is an image. (remember the image cannot link to a number that is different than the NAP and it cannot have a number in the alt text either.) This is a key point.Hope that helps,
Robert

Does having a Blog link in the top level navigation provide any better SEO value, or would having it in a footer or top navigation work just as good?
Trying to decide on whether placing a link to the blog in our top level navigation would have a better SEO value than just placing it in top or footer navigation. I have an ecommerce site.

Just How Bad is Adobe MUSE for SEO?
Adobe's new website builder "Adobe Muse" has a reputation for creating terrible code. I want to know if anyone has experience with the software and what your opinion is on just how bad the code really is for SEO. I'm currently using "Weebly", which is a similar, but more basic website building software. My results for SEO have been going well using that software, however it's limited in terms of building an aesthetically pleasing website design. On the other hand, you can build gorgeous websites with Adobe Muse, but I don't want to use it if it's going to prevent me from ranking. What are your thoughts?

Best Way To Have HD Videos On Site That Will Work On Mobile Devices
Hi, I hope someone can help me with this. I am working on a site for a client who works at a video production company. They want to have a fair few HD videos on there site but also for the site and videos to be viewable on mobile devices. I have got a responsive wordpress theme and the site is beginning to take shape. I am wondering however how I can best get the videos to display on mobile devices while maintaining a good load speed. Until now I have been using amazon S3 which stores and feeds the videos and I use Easyvideoplayer to embed the videos. The problem is they do not appear to show up from mobile devices when using wordpress. can anyone suggest the best way for me to still feed the videos from S3 but get them to display on mobile devices. oh, they are private videos so they cannot be placed on youtube.

Usability For Video Library
I want to use Wistia for my video CDN for it's obvious SEO/analytics benefits. However, I want to be able to display my videos in the best fashion for usability. I believe the NY Times did an excellent job in doing this: http://video.nytimes.com/ They have a section for recommended videos, a list of most viewed, etc. I see that Wistia allows you to create categories, which they call "Projects", but I don't see anything in regards to displaying lists of most viewed or related videos. I don't want to recreate the wheel and am assuming someone must have coded this already. Is there an open source or perhaps paid license I can obtain to display Wistia videos with the layout I described above?

Wordpress SEO Change of Structure
Hi, I have a Wordpress SEO Question. I ran the SEOMOZ checker on my website and it discovered roughly 70 of my 250 blogs had a URL length problem. I have removed the year and month from the WP structure as I read elsewhere that it is not important. The blogs displayed as follows: domain.com/blog/2011/02/contents-of-the-blog and the new structure is: domain.com/blog/contents-of-the-blog I have resubmitted the new structure to Google Webmaster Tools XML and updating the on-page sitemap on my main site. My blog was cached on 25th October and seems to be caching every 7 days, my website cached on the 24th and I wonder if I should do any follow up work to ensure the content gets crawled properly. a) Individually 301 redirect the old URLs to the new. b) Individual Canonical links for each. c) Adding the old pages to the robots file and disallowing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
