Does Having 3 Websites On Magento Affect Domain Authority?
-
We have a client who has 3 separate websites targeting the US, Australia, and the UK. Each of them has relevant ccTLD's such as: .com .com.au and .co.uk.
Our client wants to use the Magento multi-site function so it combines all the stores (which are the exact same products) and merge it into one through Magento.
Will this affect his Domain Authority? Or would they be treated as individual when receiving link value, trust, authority?
There doesn't seem a lot information out there about this can anyone help?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Lynn,
Yes many thanks it does, as with Matt I am doing the same as him but will of course make sure only the products are the same and change the store information descriptions, currencies etc.
Luckily enough I am starting fresh with 3 stores, one here in the UK, one in Germany and the other in Poland but all from a UK server.
Cheers!

Hi Keith,
All three would be running from the same server as virtual hosts, so they are on the same server and yes google would see that the server is in the one country and not the other two.
The use of the TLD (and proper localisation of currencies, texts etc etc) is a much bigger indicator to google about which country each site is aimed at than server location which is a pretty minor indicator considering so many sites are running off CDNs or are hosted in countries other than where their main market (and TLD) is.
Either way, the initial question was in regards using magento in a multi domain setup which means using the same server and therefore as you say the TLD and the server location will not always match, but as mentioned this should not really be a problem.
Hope that helps!

Sorry to come in on this question, but going back to Matt's initial question, the domains are for 3 different countries, but all 3 will be on the same server as alias domains?
Will Google view the 2 that are not on the country specific server as not in the country of the TLD?
So if they are based on a UK server and someone in Australia searches for one of his products will the domain for Australia rank ok on google.au?
Should each be on a server that is based in the domains country?

Hi Matt,
You will want to be careful of duplicate content issues since all product and static blocks etc will be sourced from the same database. But this is something you can edit on a store view by store view basis so as long as you make sure the content is suitable then really from an SEO point of view it is like you have 3 different sites.

Hi Lynnch,
Thanks for your help I am now more convinced if the Magento Multi-site function is set up properly it shouldn't be an issue.
I also wasn't sure because the three websites will share the same store and wasn't sure how Google would view this as there is very little information out there about this. Do you know if this would affect the SEO?
Thanks,
Matt

It shouldn't effect domain authority.
The multi domain setup in Magento is usually done through the use of virtual hosts on the server side in combination with different base urls for each of the main store views.
Search engines would still see the 3 domains as 3 separate domains and links pointing to the individual domains would still be pointing to separate domains.... so I don't think there would be a problem in regards domain authority.
You have probably seen it already, but here is the official Magento description of the setup procedure: http://www.magentocommerce.com/knowledge-base/entry/tutorial-multi-site-multi-domain-setup

Hi Our website Domain Authority isn't as high and was wondering why it's not increasing. Compared to 1 or 2 competitors we're not scoring as high as them. Are rankings are good for all chosen keywords. Just trying to get a better handle where our site is falling short on.

Why domain authority increase
Hi all Our domian authority has increased from 39 to 42 last week. We have been improving our metadata and removing bad backlinks recently. Is there any other reason or updates last week that would have resulted in this increase? Thanks

How to migrate from an asp.net to wordpress without loosing domain authority?
I would like to migrate my current website, which is asp.net, to WordPress. However the current asp.net is sitting on hosting which is windows based and WordPress isn't very compatible. Do I need to migrate hosting to a Linux based hosting provider? But if I do can I still migrate the asp.net files from my current website so I can 301 redirect? Any help on this would be great. Regards, Tom

How do i migrate from Volusion to Magento with the same domain using 301 redirect?
We are thinking about migrating our site from Volusion to Magento due to traffic reasons, our site's been growing and we're going way over the bandwidth limit (40gb) for Volusion every month. It only make sense for us to start on Magento CE where we can host it on our site and use our own bandwidth. We will be using the same domain, and changing our URLs to make things better (we were somewhat restricted by Volusion so we couldn't optimize some of our URL addresses). Here's comes the main question, since we are ranking pretty good for the keywords that we're targeting, we ABSOLUTELY DON'T want to lose any traffic or ranking from our pages, I know that there's something called the 301 redirect that we can use, but how can this be done? When we migrate the site, we will need to point our domain to Magento from Volusion, so basically Volusion store will be down... if we are changing domain names then the 301 redirect makes sense because we can have the original store live while it's redirecting to a completely new address. Is there any method to still setup this 301 redirect, or is there something else I can do to save our rankings??? Thanks in advance!

Is it safe to redirect our .nl (netherlands) domain that we have just purchased to our .com domain?
Hi all! We've recently developed a German version of our website with German translation and now we have just purchased a .nl domain, but with this one, we want all of the copy to remain in English. Is it ok to redirect our .nl domain to our current .com website or will this give us bad SEO points? Thank you!

When you buy a domain or website, does that trigger a fresh look by Google?
I recently purchased a domain and the corresponding website. For as far as I could tell, in the 12 months prior to my purchase, the site was well optimized within Google and had over 40 search terms on page 1 of Google in a really competitive space (lending-related). When I made the purchase, the domain was transferred from seller's GoDaddy account and into my GoDaddy account and I placed privacy protection on the domain. We did not move the hosting of the site--I took over his hosting account. And I did not make any significant changes to the website. About 1 week later, the site was totally removed from Google's index and I received notice in Google Webmaster Tools that the site may violate Google's quality guidelines. I filed reconsideration request telling Google that I was the new owner and that if there were any violations, they were caused by old owner. One week later, I got note back from Google saying they had received my reconsideration request and if they think issues are cured, then they will reindex the site. That was over a week ago and so seemingly they are not putting it back. My question is this: Does Google somehow automatically know when domains change hands and does this cause them to manually review sites? The site in question was aggressively optimized but I don't understand what would have caused Google to take action on the site when they did. In other words, if they were going to take action, why wouldn't they have done it in the prior 12 months or does the domain transfer put the site into some queue that makes them review it? BTW, the site in question has a SEOMoz domain authority grade of 85 and still is showing up as PR 5 Thanks very much for your time and consideration

Does domain WhoIs Privacy affect SEO efforts?
Hi guys, I got a hopefully quick question. I am designing a site currently that is made up of many different domain names as part of a network. I've heard that Google will penalize however is linking is passed back and forth between these domains if the registrant information was the same. I have WhoIS privacy information on all the domains to stop telemarketers and spam as well as (hopefully stop Google from getting suspicious). I'm not doing anything bad or against Google rules but I can see how they might think that if I have a huge network and links are being passed between these. It's a friend of mine who owns like 2000 domains and he wants to put legitimate information on each one and rank them higher, it's an interesting concept but I won't go into to much detail. So my question is basically, does having WhoIS privacy on all these domains, will it affect me in anyway in the SEO process? Will google count the links passing back and forth as legitimate? Or might it get suspicious and think I am spam? Are there ways to see what server it's coming from? Should all these sites be on different servers? Any help is much appreciated!
