Non Moving #1 Website
-
Hi Guys,
Bit of an odd one we have recently undertaken our SEO in house (6-7 Months) and since doing this have had some great results, we have identified our competitors utilising Ahrefs, Moz and other tools that we have selected. However we have come up against something that we really cannot work out.
-
One of our competitors ranks for everything related to there term on their website and industry at position #1
-
They are not actively doing SEO, Poor backlink structure from the research that we have carried out
-
No fresh content being generate
I was wondering if someone would perhaps mind spending 5 mins having a quick look to see what you think as i can't think what we might have missed.
Tim.

Yeah, the likes of Wickes etc do have a high domain authority but they're not focusing on these specific search terms. They are appearing because they are closely related. If they did focus specifically on each search term I'm sure they would be number 1.
I'd suggest building up your long tail, maybe slightly varied to your competitor so that you do trump them at the top and just continue down the path of progression. They've probably been there a while and Google has no reason to shift them if people are clicking onto their site and finding what they want.

Hi Shaun,
Thanks for having a look it's very much appreciated, i'm currently aware of the server speed and it's something that i need to sort out sooner rather than later!
I do take you point about there domain authority however if you look at some of the other sites DIY.com, wickes.com, bathstore.com have a huge domain authority compared to the link of the site i sent you.
But they still persist to be there on page one for short tail and long tail, it's not so much me i'm worried about however we are slowing increasing our domain authority and moving up the ranks.
Do you think it's because it's a niche site?
Tim.

Two things I have noticed.
Your site speed is quite slow. I used tools.pingdom.com. Although your page size is quite small it takes 4.51seconds to load with time to first byte 2.73seconds. There is an blog post about that here. It could be server related.
Secondly, the other site has a lot more high quality links to it, giving it a higher domain authority which may also be interlinked with the social side that Gary mentioned.
Maybe these will help you in your search for #1
-
Send me the link I will take a quick look
-
yes, but we are talking very little amount i would have thought the sites are just not optimised either and another couple of sites that have been setup with site wide links to there main domain.
Main site has 500 back links 20000 crawled pages, however most of these are down to filters and parameters and 30 referring domains
3 other linked sites
- 1 providing 160 back links
- 2 providing 5 each
-
Do those domains interlink and provide juice to the main site?
-
Absolutely chuff all! They have recently have gained 1000 facebook likes but very very little social signals as far as sharing and RT's go nothing
They have a couple of other domains but again nothing special that but to do carry links through, I have checked there is no T1, T2 or Tier 3 Links.
There is nothing untoward about it, we just can't find out why google would rank it better.
Tim.

I am seeing this a lot recently.
Do they have any good social mentions/activity?
-
Tim - You can PM me the address if you like.
It is of usually no harm to post it here so others are also able to help.
-
Hi Shaun,
You happy for me to PM you the address?
Tim.
-
Hi Tim,
What are they site addresses?

Non Published Wordpress Pages
Hi, Is there any negative SEO consequences from having too many pages private or not published. Can it like slow the site down or does it not matter? Someone in my dept. has so many pages started/not complete and besides being messy, I wonder if it has any negative impact on the site. Thanks

Website crawl error
Hi all, When I try to crawl a website, I got next error message: "java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Illegal cookie name" For the moment, I found next explanation: The errors indicate that one of the web servers within the same cookie domain as the server is setting a cookie for your domain with the name "path", as well as another cookie with the name "domain" Does anyone has experience with this problem, knows what it means and knows how to solve it? Thanks in advance! Jens

Redirect Impact - Moving From SEOmoz to Moz
Hey Guys, This has been on my mind ever since the big announcement, so today I did some searching around for some posts/talk about what the impact of their full site redirect has been for them and didn't find anything. Have they posted on this or are there any threads that I'm missing out on? I'd love to hear more about what the impact has been or any general thoughts/insights people may have. Thanks!

Website not ranking for noncompetitive terms
Hi, We've took over a website last July and no matter what we do we just can't get it ranking in Google, even for noncompetitive terms. here is the website in question: http://www.alignandsmile.co.uk Ideally the client would like to rank for Canary Wharf but that location is competitive, the site doesn't even rank for 'Dentist New Providence Wharf E14' despite it being included in the title tag on the home page and in the content throughout the website. Directories with Align and Smile's business information do rank however. I opened a case with google through Webmaster tools and they 'reviewed your site and found no manual actions by the webspam team that might affect your site's ranking in Google.' So I'm a bit stuck. The site ranks top for the keyphrase in Bing and Yahoo...we are really struggling with Google! Any help would be much appreciated. many thanks Marcus

Help Website Plumetting :(
Hi I have been smacked by the penguin/panda and traffic plumetted back in April/May. We are still trying to recover and am looking at all of the potential issues. I have since cleaned up the site as much as i can and attempted to remove as much duplicate content as possible which is automatically generated by Zencart. We add content regularly and have new product reviews everyday and all product page are kept fresh as they show the last 12 customers engraving details which change daily on popular items. Could someone give me some pointers as i am hitting my head against the wall and only seeing traffic drop all the time, it's soul destroying just how much work i am putting into this every day without any effect. Site is www.keepitpersonal.co.uk Kind Regards Andy

How can I see if my website was penalize by Google?
Hello, I have a website http://digitaldiscovery.eu that I have been working for 7 months. Everything is alright in the index of the search engines like Google, Bing e Yahoo. I also have like 1000 visits a month wich is not bad for the topic Im pointing at in my country. However my pagerank insist to be on 0, and I really dont understand why. Some of the my competitors that started at the same time, already have a pagerank of 3 and they do not have the same visitors that I do. In the rank system of Alexa im climbing very fast and the visits of my website are growing. So why does the pagerank dont climb aswell?! Tks in advance, Pedro M Pereira

Website has been penalized?
Hey guys, We have been link building and optimizing our website since the beginning of June 2010. Around August-September 2010, our site appeared on second page for the keywords we were targeting for around a week. They then dropped off the radar - although we could still see our website as #1 when searching for our company name, domain name, etc. So we figured we had been put into the 'google sandbox' sort of thing. That was fine, we dealt with that. Then in December 2010, we appeared on the first page for our keywords and maintained first page rankings, even moving up the top 10 for just over a month. On January 13th 2011, we disappeared from Google for all of the keywords we were targeting, we don't even come up in the top pages for company name search. Although we do come up when searching for our domain name in Google and we are being cached regularly. Before we dropped off the rankings in January, we did make some semi-major changes to our site, changing meta description, changing content around, adding a disclaimer to our pages with click tracking parameters (this is when SEOmoz prompted us that our disclaimer pages were duplicate content) so we added the disclaimer URL to our robots.txt so Google couldn't access it, we made the disclaimer an onclick link instead of href, we added nofollow to the link and also told Google to ignore these parameters in Google Webmaster Central. We have fixed the duplicate content side of things now, we have continued to link build and we have been adding content regularly. Do you think the duplicate content (for over 13,000 pages) could have triggered a loss in rankings? Or do you think it's something else? We index pages meta description and some subpages page titles and descriptions. We also fixed up HTML errors signaled in Google Webmaster Central and SEOmoz. The only other reason I think we could have been penalized, is due to having a link exchange script on our site, where people could add our link to their site and add theirs to ours, but we applied the nofollow attribute to those outbound links. Any information that will help me get our rankings back would be greatly appreciated!
