Places page help
-
Hi I was hoping somebody could provide me with some help regarding places pages.
If I search 'recruitment agencies Chester' I get this result https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=recruitment+agencies+chester&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&gws_rd=cr&ei=LsBTUr6rJ8Sw0wXt74CQAg
I am confused as to why certain sites are ranking higher than others for example:
The site with the a) ranking has no reviews and the place page doesn't seem particularly optimised.
The site ranked at c) has 2 bad reviews
The site ranked at g) seems to have a much more optimised places page yet ranks below the other sites.
Is this just a strange batch of results or can somebody provide me with more information/ help? I don't understand the ranking system at the moment.
Thanks for any help you might be able to offer!

Good point, Linda! It's listed as the seventh most-influential factor in the Local Search Ranking Factors 2013, but that doesn't explain what you have, regarding organic factors and the cream at the top:)
-
Yes, Miriam is right. Lots of factors in the mix.
But what controls the TOP of the 7 pack, usually the top 3 - 4 (depends on market) is ORGANIC ranking factors. So when you see a listing sitting at A that's unclaimed and has no reviews, may not even have many citations, but it's the strength of the site that put it on top - not Place page ranking factors.

Hi OnlineChester,
Ocelot has smartly pointed out the role of citations in the results. This is quite true, but there are several hundred other factors in Google's Local algo, so if you want to be able to diagnose the competition, you need to take many, many things into account. I recommend that you study the recent Local Search Ranking Factors 2013.
For example, the top ten factors deemed most influential are:
1. Proper category associations
2. Physical address in city of search
3. Consistency of structured citations
4. Quality/authority of structured citations
5. HTML NAP matching place page NAP
6. Quantity of structured citations
7. Domain authority of website
8. Individually owner-verified Local+ page
9. City/state in Places landing page title
10. Proximity of address to centroid
So, these are just a few to get started on. Hopefully by studying the whole report I've linked to, you will be able to begin assessing your competition. There are, of course, some instances in which spam gets into Google's local pack of results, meaning that legit businesses are being outranked by spam, but typically, what you see in the pack is based on a large number of factors, and the best thing you can do is to excel in as many of these areas as possible yourself. Hope this helps!

Without looking into too much detail, you also need to factor in that the listings might have more external citations which are causing them to rank higher in the results, the landing URL in Google's opinion is a better match right down to the location of the business in the city.
Getting more external citations and completing your listing 100% will help. Ensuring that the naming and address structure is the same across all external citations Yell, Yelp, Scoot etc.
On your URL on your Google places listing ensure that it contains the address, local telephone number of the business. This does not always need to be the homepage especially if you have multiple locations.
Hope this helps

How can I improve my search results for local pages?
My test for this specific example is http://www.mylocalgaragerepair.com This client is trying to reach out for the local terms such as garage door repair for Temecula and other cities in riverside county. I build the following page. http://www.mylocalgaragerepair.com/temecula-garage-door-repair-temecula-garage-door-service/ What am I doing wrong? Is there some plugin's or other type things that would help my rank locally? If you solve this you've solved one of the main problems I'm having with my business. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Should I create a Google Places listing for an online only store?
We currently run an e-commerce store that is online only. We do have an office address that I could list for Google Places, but it is not open to visitors so I am not sure if this would contravene the TOS. At the moment we are in the process of trying to build reviews and Google's revamped 'Places for Businesses' looks like it would be a great tool for monitoring and responding to reviews. From what I can see, though, it is only available to those with a Google Places listing. I am also looking into independent review services, but typically these cost £100 per month minimum, whereas Places for Business would be free. Is there a way that we can use Google Places to build reviews, given that we do not have an actual shopfront? If not, does anyone have any advice on how an online only store can build reviews in the same manner using Google's own tools?

Google Places Bulk Uploader
Hi we have 15 stores we want to transfer over to our main google places account. We can only claim them with google places bulk uploader. So from what i have read, i have to add each store to the spreadsheet then request bulk upload. Since these google places listings already exist, will the listings i create (via the spreadsheet) simply merge with the old ones? Or could there be a chance of the creation of duplicate listings (how can you avoid this). And is it necessary to add latitude and longitude points (because you don't have to add them)? The goal is to add the old listings into a our Google Places account, and can only use the bulk uploader. Thanks,

Google Places categories
I work with a Local SEO company for troubleshooting our Google Places and optimization. They suggested that in order for us to rank for the keywords we provided them with they need to change the categories. Now, those categories do not exist in Google Places and I read on Seomoz and Google help forum that we should choose from the ones in the list provided by Google. I also know that Categories should not contain location-based information. Should I let them do that?

Is specifying a floor descriptive enough for Google Places?
Hello everyone, I have a quick question regarding Google Places. I have a client who operates her business in a building with multiple other businesses. This address is completely legitimate and our client provides fitness services at this location. We have asked her for a more specific location, but she does not have a suite or room #. The best we can do is the floor #, but there are other businesses on her floor as well. Would this lack of specificity affect her ability to rank in local results? There are 4 other businesses at the address. If we provide strong and relevant citations, will this be enough? Thank you and my apologies if this has been asked before. I searched the previously asked question but didn't find what i was looking for.

Google Places & Maps
Hi I'm preparing a confernce in France to explain Google Places & Maps to an audience interested in promoting local businesses but mainly hotels and other tourism related. As you know, searches such as Hotel + City are giving a lot of visibility to Google Places results. Being in the top results is as important if not more important than organic ranking. I'm going to be looking into the new presentation of Google Places results in the SERPs and maybe underlining a difference in results between Places and Maps which I've just recently spotted. Can anyone recommend some good ressources online to explain the changes that came about with Google Places and ranking factors I should be talking about ? If you have a pet theory on what triggers the different presentation of Places results in the main SERPS or what factors make one local business rank better than another in Google Places then please discuss below too 😉 Ah ! Almost forgot, any feedback on Google Boost use also interesting for us ; although it isn't in France yet Thanks Neil

Do search enginges prefer pages with mobile websites on the mobile phone?
Let me explain what I want to know: Somebody searches e.g. for a hotel on his mobile phone. Do the search engines rank websites with special mobile pages better than others? I am not considering the local factor here (let's say there are hotels nearby with or without mobile websites). If not, is there a trend for that? Does anyone have some datas / examples / experience about that?
