Website dropping from Page 1 pos 5 to no ranking and then back again?
-
Hi all,
We have a very odd occurrence with a client of ours. It should be noted that they had a penalty recently removed about 2 months ago after much work from our company.
Recently they started appearing back on Page 1 Google for a semi competitive keyword term. We were very happy with this and so was the client. The the ranking improved with our work to position 5, which was excellent.
Unfortunately what has been happening is they have been dropping out of the rankings completely for this semi competitive keyword for a few days and then reappearing in the same position. The client is checking daily and has noticed.
I thought this is just a 'hangover' from the Google penalty and perhaps a one off occurrence, but it has happened about 3 or 4 times now and seems to be happening every couple of weeks. Can anyone shed some light on this behavior?
I have checked Webmasters Tools and everything is fine.
Thanks
Jon

Yes it was an unatural links penalty that we solved by using the links disavow tool and reconsideration requests. I would say that we saw improvement on some keywords quite instantly but others lets say 1 month after wards.
There has now been about 4 months since we had it lifted and generally speaking we have seen improvements apart from this one keywords (which the client is heavily focused on).
Thoughts?

Was it an unnatural links penalty? Around what date did your search results start to return?

Thanks for your replies guys, I will look into the book EGOL suggested.
The competition is not doing a huge amount from what I can see in terms of effective link building. Like I say it is competitive but not hugely competitive. Much of what they are doing is quite standard link building.
From what we are doing:
Nothing automated at all. Like I say the client had a penalty and we removed it, and the last thing we want to do is get them another one.We are focused on several different link building tactics such as gaining links from their industry suppliers, getting links for companies that stock their products - both highly relevant for the industry.
Guest blogging is something that we are doing a little of each month but focusing the anchor text around their brand and keeping the content nice and relevant.
We have looked at gain some high authority directory links such as Yahoo BOTW etc to gain some more established links for the profile.
On-page we have been adhering to all the best practices in regards to content, title tags, blog content etc http://moz.com/search-ranking-factors
The client isn't doing huge amounts on social media, but they are doing some - so I would say that is the weakness.
We are monitoring 30 keywords and the majority are behaving inline with common expectations and also improving gradually. It is this one keyword that I know the previous SEO really abused the anchor text for which is the main issue.

EGOL brings up a strong point. Offering in your terms to bring strong SERPS to a client that can be measured by the day is not for the faint of heart. You mentioned that it's a semi-competitive keyword and there is HUGE variance going on... here are some questions that should help us give you some more specific advice.
Are you watching what your competition is doing? (links, anchor text, etc)
Is there anything automated in what you are using for off page seo?
What have you done to get the ranking for this keyword since you started on page and off page? -
Google has lots of different indexes and serves them to whoever has a query routed to a server that uses them.
In other words. There are many indexes running simultaneously. Some have older data than others. Some have different algos. And some could be responding to different devices, cookies, browsers, etc that you are using or where you are searching from.
Google has many thousands of servers running in many data centers in different parts of the world. They are not all the same. Lots are running experiments to see how searchers respond to different presentations of the SERPs.
If you want to learn more about this read the book "In the Plex". Very interesting and highly recommended reading for any SEO. If you don't read it you do not understand google. Honest.

Too many wordpress redirects impact Rankings?
Our website cms is WordPress. We have recently changed the URL pattern of our blog pages which resulted in hundreds of crawl errors in Google search console. Even though we don't have any broken links; old pages have been reported at Google. We are trying to redirect the old URLs to new which will be handled by auto redirects or manual redirects. Will so many redirects impact on website? I don't mean about internal redirects. I mean about redirects made for the cause of reclaiming non existing pages referred from external sites

Search Visibilty Score dropped by 50%!
Howdy MOZ community, I have been practicing all the "right" techniques on my website, The website in question was doing pretty well ranking among top 5 on SERP's for over 30 keywords, bounce rate of 65% which has been steady since last year, Since 2 weeks ago I have noticed a MAJOR DROP on more than 80% of my rankings, The website in question has also lost 50% in search visibility score, I have checked my Google webmaster tools and there are no alerts regarding bad links ETC, What could be the reason? I hope I can get this sorted out before my employees quit on me because we have lost business by 70%. Please help!

Product descriptions & category pages
Hi I wanted to ask if anyone knew how much, if at all, product page titles/descriptions affected the rankings of the category page they're linked from? I am looking for ways to improve the ranking of category pages, but we don't want to put too much content which overshadows the product listings. Thanks!

50% drop in search, no changes to site over 2 days, no notifications, A rank...
My URL is: http://applianceassistant.com

With no changes to my site, I suddenly experienced a huge drop in search queries on Aug1. Your company has still given me an overall rating of A. I just thought you may be able to help or be interested in my case due to it's strange nature. Due to some suggestions on the webmaster forums, I have disavowed all low quality back links to the site, and I am currently working through each page trying to make the key words a little less spammy. Here are some screen shots of the action...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DVCYxhkutbQ/U-pxpQVfYfI/AAAAAAAAAEo/MN9PiLFT-zs/s1600/pages_july.tiff This appears to be almost a 50% 2 year set back. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated0 -

Reasons for a sharp decline in pages crawled
Hello! I have a site I've been tracking using Moz since July. The site is mainly stagnant with some on page content updates. Starting the first week of December, Moz crawler diagnostics showed that the number of pages crawled decreased from 300 to 100 in a week. So did the number of errors through. So crawler issues went from 275 to 50 and total pages crawled went from 190 to 125 in a week and this number has stayed the same for the last 5 weeks. Are the drops a red flag? Or is it ok since errors decreased also? Has anyone else experienced this and found an issue? FYI: sitemap exists and is submitted via webmaster tools. GWT shows no crawler errors nor blocked URLs.

Ranking drop Feb 2013?
I'm trying to get to the bottom of why Directholidays.co.uk suffered a drop in rankings for the term "cheap holidays" in February 2013. Im looking at this recently and as an outsider so I haven't got access to Webmaster tools and I haven't been tracking rankings/link profiling. They moved from 2nd to 10th temporarily and then recovered at 7th the new 10th! I've looked at keywords improved/declined on, keywords lost/gained, traffic, traffic price but im failing to see exactly what I can use to show whether Panda #24 (officially 22nd of January) had a significant effect. Can anyone shed any light on this? It would be massively appreciated!

Sharp Drop in SERP Ranking for Specific Keyword
I'm sure this happens to a lot of people for a lot of different reasons. My pages http://www.cleanedison.com/leed and http://www.cleanedison.com/courses/leed-green-associate suddenly dropped off the map over the past 2 weeks for the keyword "LEED Certification" I tried to limit the number of times "LEED" was mentioned on the first URL (/leed) to try to combat an over-optimization penalty but I did not for the second (/leed-green-associate). Both of them have fallen precipitously and are no where to be found on Google. What can I do to troubleshoot this? Is there anyway to guard against this in the future?
