Search by popular terms
-
This may be a simple question and possibly already answered to death - but I think i'm not asking or googling the right question so I haven't been able to get a good answer for it.
Some websites have a feature at the bottom of their page where one can "search by popular terms", consisting of keywords linked to the search result of that term. Some websites do this: http://www.kogan.com/au/search-terms/
-
This must be obviously an optimisation technique, but how does this benefit ranking?
-
Are there any down sides to this?
-
Is this still a current good practice?

Hello Lydia.
First - I don't recommend it in general but it does work to a degree. It used to work better.
The idea is that if you link to a page dedicated to a subject and cram enough instances of that phrase onto the page (such as in a product list as in your example) that the page will rank for at least longtail versions of those queries.
In the example you sent it likely does work to some degree but that's because they're a fairly strong site. Nonetheless they probably saw their search volume decline as of late as it's pretty thin content. Focus on this type of strategy and you're basically asking for trouble.
If you stick to creating good content people want to link to and work hard to get people to find it and link to it in the first place (pretty necessary) you'll do far better overall. If you want to rank for longtail phrases - build real pages on the subject. Sure you can mention and link to products but provide some value for readers - not just a product list.
And of course ... GOOD LUCK !

What is the perfect way to handle multiple sitemaps index in Search Console?
Hello friends, I have this doubt for a long and i want to share it with you. In our agency many clients have a PHP template for the home page of their sites, and also have a blog with wordpress as CMS. When i am optimizing sitemaps, I have two separate files, an index of Sitemaps created with Wordpress SEO by Yoast (which inside has separate Sitemaps tags, categories, posts, pages, authors, etc.) and on the other hand the home page sitemap with the subsections. As you know the sitemap generated by "Wordpress SEO by Yoast" is dynamic as it creates the sitemap according to current site content, and is updated every time a new entry is raised or modify any URL. This makes it very practical. I can not have a unique index sitemap sitemaps nesting inside another, as it is not allowed by Google or Sitemap protocol. I read in the Google Support you can upload multiple sitemaps to Search Console but does not say anywhere on upload multiple sitemaps index, or a combination thereof. In my case, I would have to upload two separately files, the dynamically generated with wordpress and the manual created for the PHP template. In my opinion there is no problem and Google will index everything properly performing it this way, but I wanted to share it with you to see how you solve this problem and what experiences had. Thanks and best regards.

Do Search Engines Try To Follow Phone Number Links
Any SEO thoughts on using rel="nofollow" when inserting a link to a phone number? To make a phone number click to call we use (555) 555-1234 Wondering if search engines are trying to follow that link or if this is standard and not to worry. Any thoughts on if I should add rel="nofollow" to these or does it not matter? Thanks!

Improving the search function on my site...
Hi all, The search function on my site is pretty bad... it basically lists every single product for any search query. Has anyone got experience integrating a 3rd party tool such as Google Custom Search or Pardot and if so which would you recommend? Alternatively, any tips on improving/ creating rules for site search would be appreciated. https://www.boardwarehouse.co.uk/ Thanks, Alick

Google Search - One page having problems
this issue is concerning my site - cruvoir.com we retail designer clothing online, and currently have 17 'designer' pages - one for each manufacturer brand name. We target these brand names for our campaign and track the progress with Moz and try to focus them in Google search. Of many of the designer names, we rank pretty well in Google search (usually under #15 when searching for the specific brand. All brands are doing well, except one brand : "Lost And Found" - a designer label we carry. This is the page for this brand name : https://cruvoir.com/5-lost-and-found we cannot figure it out. It happens to be our most important label we carry. when we search for this brand name or include it in any other search terms, we never are in the google search results. I expect it is a crawl issue, but we have covered all our ground in optimizing this brand page. It seems this page is also indexed with Google. But we cannot figure out why it does not rank us in search.

Do search engines look for keywords in the slug?
Is it OK to split a key phrase into a slug and file name, or should the entire key phrase be in the file name. For example, consider the following articles: How to wash your car.

How to change a tire. How to replace a windshield wiper. Will search engines recognize the "how to" in the following taxonomy: www.domain.com/how-to/wash-your-car/
www.domain.com/how-to/change-a-tire/
www.domain.com/how-to/replace-a-windshield-wiper/ Or, should the "how-to" be included in the file name? Best,Christopher0 -
Is it better to target fewer keyword terms more often throughout a site or more keyword terms less often?
For example we have 5 different briefcases styles on our site with 5 different colors each. Is it better to have them all target the same keyword term: ie. Men's Leather Briefcase Bag - Examiner No. 5 Black Leather | Ghurka Men's Leather Briefcase Bag - Examiner No. 5 Brown Leather | Ghurka Men's Leather Briefcase Bag - Examiner No. 5 Tan Leather | Ghurka Men's Leather Briefcase Bag - Examiner No. 5 Black Twill | Ghurka Men's Leather Briefcase Bag - Examiner No. 5 Navy Twill | Ghurka etc. OR Men's Leather Briefcase Bag - Examiner Leather Bag for Men | Ghurka Leather Men's Briefcase Bag - Examiner Leather Bag for Men | Ghurka Leather Handmade Briefcase - Examiner Leather Bag for Men | Ghurka Men's Designer Business Bag - Examiner Leather Bag for Men | Ghurka Leather Men's Laptop Bag - Examiner Leather Bag for Men | Ghurka Advice would be greatly appreciated! A popular page has gone out of the top fifty what have i done wrong
Hi, we have a very popular page http://www.in2town.co.uk/Gastric-Band-Hypnotherapy and it has always done well with our readers as well as ranking with google. we were on the first page for a long time and then in january we dropped to the top of the second page in google and now we are not in the top fifty. Have i done something wrong with this page, is it under optimized. Basically i have not really thought about optimizing the page, i have always just had articles on their and having the intro with the links, i am not sure if i should just have the links on there without the intro. The keyword we have is gastric band hypnotherapy and i would have thought with all the content we have on the subject the page would still do well. It seems something is really wrong, not sure if i have to many articles on the page or not. any advice would be great.

Can't find Text-Only Cached version in Google search
Hi, I'm trying to view the text-only of a webpage to run a SEO audit, however Google does not give me this option. When i click the two arrows that appear to the right of a search result, the only option I get is Cached. Is there a reason this might be happening? I've tried clearing my cookies, signing out of Google, and anything else I could find on my troll of the internet. I also tried text, only please! however whether this works or not is debatable considering it shows me actual pictures on the site. Any ideas, or maybe another add-on that will work?
