To use or not to use YouTube - That is the question!
-
We often get clients asking us what is the best option for getting the most out of their videos.
We typically default to this blog post: http://moz.com/blog/hosting-and-embedding-for-video-seo
We have had clients question this information, sending us such links as:
http://marketingland.com/infographic-video-youtube-wins-google-universal-search-37971
http://www.seoinc.com/seo-blog/why-you-should-embed-youtube-videos/
http://www.sitepronews.com/2012/07/03/how-to-use-youtube-to-boost-your-web-sites-seo-rankings/Would you consider the information in the Moz blog post to still be accurate. What are your opinions on the perspectives presented in the other posts? Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thank you

Hi team at Booj,
I've written quite a few things since that article which expand on the topic of video hosting and YouTube, which I recommend you have a look at. The most relevant one for you will be http://moz.com/blog/the-marketing-value-of-youtube which explains when YouTube is a valuable marketing channel.
You should also find this http://moz.com/blog/building-a-video-seo-strategy useful and there's a video on this page http://www.distilled.net/consulting/video-seo/ which covers the topic in some detail.
Additionally, my presentation from MozCon this year covers the topic in depth, so I recommend having a look through those videos when they're available.
Thanks,
Phil

I believe the Moz post is still very accurate, and that it provides very good info.
As well, I would suggest to, depending on the type of business you need the video for, (as well as on the video quality etc.), use the different strategic tools you have available, combining them as you best find it useful.
As well, you could easily have the video on several channels, plus the video embedded in your post to help (with rich snippets) increase the CTR.
Anyway, I would surely never (or almost never) discard youtube from my options, when dealing with video, knowing that few different channels can be used. (Think about social media, do you use only fb, twitter or plus separately, or do you try to have a strategic focus and line throughout all the channels? If you do so with socials, why not with video?
Hope I helped some how

We currently put our videos up on our YouTube channel and then embed them on our site. We are exploring the option of self-hosting new videos and then "archiving" them on YouTube.
This might give some of the best of both worlds- no competition when they are fresh and more eyes when they are a little more mature.

SEO benefits of terms used in Alt-tag, image name, page title
On our website, we have products that come in different colours, and we have created a different SKU for each one .e.g. our Acacia Evening Dress comes in 3 different colours (black, blue and red) - Acacia Evening Dress Black (J7048BLK), Acacia Evening Dress Blue (J7048RB), Acacia Evening Dress Red (J7048R). Would it be beneficial for SEO if on the image Alt-tag we used the terms 'Jadore J7048 Red Acacia dress', 'Jadore J7048 Black Acacia dress' and 'Jadore J7048 Blue Acacia dress', because 'Acacia' is the internal name we have given to this dress, not the name provided by the label, Jadore, as more customers would search for terms such as 'black dress' or 'Jadore J7048'? Can we use the same terms in the Alt-tag on the image and the page title? How important is the Alt-tag in searching?

Can I use PO boxes as an actual business Address?
Hi mozzers, A potential future client(electrician) covers 40+ locations in one region(local SEO) but only has 1 address. He wants to rank for at least 5 to 7 main locations which he has PO boxes for. Can I use these as addresses on his website or will it be seen as violating the google guideline? If it is no good what should I do? Thanks

Thinking about using a Public Relations firm to post articles
How much value is there in links from articles sent to places like Yahoo and Topix. Various news sources. I have about 20 related topics we can publish articles on in order to try and get some higher rankings from a few key word phrases. Is 4 a month okay? Would 1 a day be okay. Just looking to help to compete with the big guys in my industry. Any past experience or advice is appreciated. Boo

Has Anyone Used CBS Local Pages?
CBS has a service that they offer to their advertisers called CBS Local Pages. Has anyone used this? It's about $1500 a month and basically they send "business data" to local listing platforms, this is similar to UBL and LocalEZE it seems. One of my associates subscribed to this and they're unsure of the value, they are paying $1500/mo for something that can be achieved with $125/year with localeze. Has anyone used this?

Video SEO - Youtube vs. 3rd party hosting with Video Sitemap
We need some feedback on the best place to upload videos. Should we be uploading our videos everywhere (YouTube, Metacafe, Vimeo, etc.)? Note: Currently we are using a 3rd party video video hosting solution called Treepodia. Previously we used Wistia. Both host our videos, and submit a Video Sitemap through Webmaster tools. When one of these videos shows up in search results and somebody clicks on it, they are directed back to our website. Are we competing against ourselves if we upload videos to other networks like Youtube, etc. if we are already submitting a Video Sitemap through a 3rd party? I've noticed we rank higher in Google Videos search for our Youtube videos vs. our 3rd party hosted videos. Also, how do Youtube video views tie into this situation... we used to embed videos via Youtube embed code. Now we seem to be missing out on the extra views we were getting by doing so. Ultimate question: host videos through a 3rd party and submit a video sitemap OR host videos on Youtube and embed on our website?

Placing video testimonials on website vs. YouTube
We have produced a number of video guest testimonials. Any SEO considerations or other hosting it on our website (what software to use?) vs. YouTube (and just embedding it on the webpage)? Are there certain situation or circumstances when YouTube is not the best choice for placing video on a website? Thanks.
