What is the best way to deal with https?
-
Currently, the site I am working on is using HTTPS throughout the website. The non-HTTPS pages are redirected through a 301 redirect to the HTTPS- this happens for all pages.
Is this the best strategy going forward? if not, what changes would you suggest?
-
Hi,
It sounds as though you have done everything right.
BUT - (this is a bug-bear of mine) Google doesn't display breadcrumb rich snippet info on https pages.
Also, some directories won't link to https pages (not ever seen this as a major issue because it's usually the spammy directories that do this)

Thomas, he already said that the HTTP site is being 301 redirected to its HTTPS version. So why adding all that about how to do 301s on Apache on nginx?
-
I normally would have agreed with Federico I did some checking and I personally would go with the 301 redirect the other thing I would do when you're doing this is move your server to Nginx it's much faster and uses much less RAM.
My reasons being that you want the site to be consistent. The 301 redirect will do that there is a chance of inconsistency with Canonical tags as the server does not have to obey it.

If you do decide to make the change this is a handy tool
http://www.anilcetin.com/ This converts Apache redirects to Nginx redirects.

Thomas

Then you are all set!
-
Canonical tags, when in place, point to HTTPS currently.
-
What you are doing is completely alright.
Make sure your canonical tags are set properly to point to the HTTPS versions of the pages.
Hope that helps!

Topic Cluster: URL Best Practices
I'm trying to be mature and employ the Topic Cluster strategy to my content. In doing so I realized there are a few URL options. Some more difficult to execute than others. -Is it important to call out the Pillar Topic in your subtopic URL?
Technical SEO | | dkellyagile
-Does the Pillar Topic need to have its own landing page? (As opposed to just being part of the blog.) Here's an Example: My Pillar is: Inbound vs. Outbound
My subtopic is: Marketing Platforms Here are the URL options I can think of... Option 1: https://pipelineinbound.com/blog/inbound-vs-outbound-marketing-platforms/ Option 2: https://pipelineinbound.com/blog/which-marketing-platforms/ Option 3: https://pipelineinbound.com/blog/marketing-platforms-inbound-vs-outbound/ Option 4 (Hardest): https://pipelineinbound.com/inbound-vs-outbound/marketing-platforms/ Are there some fundamental best practices for URL structure and Link Building as it pertains to Topic Clusters? Google Serps Not Showing HTTPS in Front of URL
Hi Everyone, We implemented the HTTPS change to our four websites about 6 months ago. I have found something that I feel is strange. The homepage of each website shows www.domain.com, but all the internal pages show https://www.domain.com/page. If you click through it shows it as secure, but I feel that because it is happening on all four websites, that something was done incorrectly. Here is one Google SERP: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1&biw=1920&bih=947&ei=gq9GWpizBuuF_Qa_p5e4Bw&q=tanzanite+jewelry+designs&oq=tanzanite+jewelry+designs&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0l2.130446.136028.0.136152.29.17.4.7.9.0.207.2214.7j9j1.17.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..1.28.2350...0i131k1j0i22i30k1.0.BA5-meGmuA0 As you can see, our site displays with no https, but all the internal pages do. It just worries me as I have seen our internal pages increasing in positioning, but not our homepage. Any ideas?

How to deal with high authority but irrelevant external links
Hi, My client has an online ecommerce site where he sells wedding items. His previous SEO company added his URL to many websites that are related to porn. Those are high authority websites but are irrelevant to my client's business. Should I disavow those links?

Https Version of Homepage in SERPS
The https version of our homepage appears in Google's SERPs. We have rel canonical on the page pointing to the http version. We have a redirect in our htaccess that sends https to http. I thought this was just a fluke and it would be fixed by the next crawl, but it's been like this for a few weeks now. Not only that, but we're losing rank a bit and I'm afraid there's a correlation. Has this ever happened to anyone?

Which is best of narrow by search URLs? Canonical or NOINDEX
I have set canonical to all narrow by search URLs. I think, it's not working well. You can get more idea by following URLs. http://www.vistastores.com/table-lamps?material_search=1328 http://www.vistastores.com/table-lamps?finish_search=146 These kind of page have canonical tag which is pointing to following one. http://www.vistastores.com/table-lamps Because, it's actual page which I want to out rank. But, all narrow by search URLs have very different products compare to base URLs. So, How can we say it duplicate one? Which is best solution for it. Canonical or NOINDEX it by Robots?

Whats the quickest way of diagnosing a canonical problem
Salut from from positivley tropical 10 degrees C wetherby UK 🙂 Ok here goes... on this site http://www.cedarcourthotels.co.uk/ there is a canonical problem but I'm interested to know if my method of spotting a canonical problem is the most efficient. In the case of Cedar Court I started with http://www.cedarcourthotels.co.uk/ then i entered this https://www.cedarcourthotels.co.uk/ and noted they were pointing to the same home page. My question is there a quicker way of diagnosing a canonical problem or is it a case of knowcking out w's and adding s etc. Thanks in advance, David

Hi, Currently when a page is not found I make a 301 redirect to a 404 page should I really do a redirect or maybe a rewrite of the 404 page without redirection? Thanks, Asaf
