Does this traffic drop look like Penguin to you?
-
Dear Community
In early October, I noticed a sharp drop of the rankings of the main KW of a website I manage: idee-sol.fr. This, of course I immediatelly attributed to penguin 2.1.
While researching on the experience other webmasters have had with this unfortunate situation, I noticed that most of them had very sharp drops of traffic in a relatively small time, e.g.: a drop of 80% in a couple of days. But on idee-sol, the drop looks less steep yet equally worrying. Was the cause of this traffic/ranking drop due to penguin 2.1 exclusively or to penguin + something else (or not penguin at all?)
I'm including an image of the "non paid search" report of analytics.

OK, Thanks Lynn

HI,
On the face of it this certainly looks like a penguin related drop, the time fame matches even if the drop is less steep than some have seen. It is worth looking at your organic traffic segmented by landing page, maybe your homepage took an immediate hit and some inner pages pages held their rankings a bit longer (or vice versa). If the site is quite new then it is also possible that you are seeing normal variations that often come with new sites (which may explain the slower drop off, the penguin update hit your main keyword(s) and the longer tail stuff slowly declined as google eventually decided where your pages should be placed in the serps). It is of course always worth thinking about if any other changes in the code or content happened at the same time which might have had an effect of rankings.
If you have been building a lot of links through directories and especially if those have been somewhat keyword heavy then a penguin hit seems likely (even though no manual penalty notice). I would hold off on building any more directory links and start looking at evening out your profile with some more natural type links (these will depend a bit on your industry).

The directories may be a problem, Penguin doesn't like them. you can always try to disinvow a percentage of them see if you notice any improvement from there. I don't imagine its one thing alone.

Hi Chris
Thank you for your answer.
The website is new so I really cannot compare it to last year. According to google trends there is some seasonal variation for the main keywords used on the site, but nothing as brutal as an 80% variation.
The SERPS have gone down considerably, I have been tracking the weekly positions using many sources (including MOZ), they were slowly but surely descending from the 4th to the end of October.
Linkbuilding has been done using high quality, human curated directories. Normally I would not consider them spammy, but you never know. Google had detected about 60 backlinks before the penalty.
I have not received a manual penalty notification from Google
-
Have you compared the traffic to previous years to see if its a seasonal drop off ?
Have you also looked at your SERP position? Penguin would have a drop there more than it would visitors.
Have you done any new link building that may have resulted in a hit by penguin? Its worth looking at your back links to see if they look bad and may be whats doing it too etc.
It's worth looking at multiple metrics before jumping the gun a bit.
I hope some of the above questions may help you narrow it down a bit.
You may find Google trends helpful for looking at data over time if you can't go back so far in your analytics or want a broader bit of research.

60% of Direct traffic is actually Organic
For some pre-reading, Groupon experimented with deindexing part of their site back in 2014 and found that they had a big drop in direct traffic: http://searchengineland.com/60-direct-traffic-actually-seo-195415 Recently I've conducted a similar test on a very large site and have found that Direct dropped somewhere between 50-80% for the pages deindexed, depending on the day (It has been running for ~4 days). Has anyone else tried this experiment before? If so what were your results?
Reporting & Analytics | | Leads.Bz
What I'm most interested in now is to find out why this traffic is classed as Direct - there appears to be no reason why the site or server would interfere, so I can only imagine that Google is sending traffic without referrer data. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why they would do that?0 -

Drop in google.com / referral trafic
Hi, On one of our sites (after the release of a new version, including redirections), we've seen a drop in referral trafic from google.fr (france). I know that this trafic usually comes from Google Images but it doesnt seem to be the case this time. The referal path is "/" and not "imgres" as it usually is when it comes from google images. The search trafic hasnt dropped tough... The site is a job listing site. We also saw a drop from indeed.com, I guess their crawler got lost in our new site... Any idea on the possible google site it could come from? Thank you,

Tracking Google places (7 pack listing) traffic in google analytics
Is there a way to see Google Places traffic (traffic from users clicking through the 7 pack listings) segmented in Google analytics ? Normally is it just lumped together with the organic traffic ? Can you see the search phrases used to find your site, or do they also show up under 'not provided' when from Google Places. Im aware i can see some limited data in the Google Places analytics, but these seem to be 2 days behind when ever i view them.

Why My Site Got 1000% increase in organic traffic from day to night?
Did Google run any update Monday or recently? My site www.shirts4geek.com, strangely had a 1000% organic traffic increase from day to night. I didn't do anything in this site for long a time... but Monday I had a lot traffic coming from organic and every other day this week the site is doing extremely well on traffic and sales. I'm ranking first page for many keywords relate to my products. I wish I could figure out what happens so I can replicate it. The site has very links and the On Page Optimization is kind of basic. Does any have any idea how it could be possible? Have any one seen something similar lately?

Very specific visitor drop
Hello there, Last week I discovered an unnatural drop in the direct traffic channel while analyzing all traffic channels. I dived into the data and discovered the following aspects of the traffic drop: The drop is only caused by: Direct traffic coming from browser Safari on Apple tablets (Safari traffic includes 83% of all direct tablet traffic) Android, mobile and desktop traffic didn't drop at all The direct tablet traffic dropped on the 1st of October It has never dropped before and it has grown naturally every month since more than a year In week 42 we only made 35% of the revenue we made in week 39. We're talking about k's. I attatched two screenshots coming from Google Analytics: the drop of direct tablet traffic compared to direct mobile traffic, and the drop of direct Safari tablet traffic compared to direct Android tablet traffic. We asked our web developer (SEOShop) about possible changes they made around the 1st of October to i.e. our mobile website. They said that they didn't change anything but they pointed to Hummingbird that has been released around that date. I can't link the traffic issue with Hummingbird though.. Can anybody let their light shine about this one? I'm very thankful. Marcel 76gzsLx,fOlkm10#1

Sudden dramatic drop in "some but not all" keyphrase rankings for client, 3 weeks ago
I noticed recently that 4 of my keyphrases which ranked on page one, and were climbing 3 weeks ago, have suddenly dropped to > 50. What could have happened? I did find an issue with my sitemap (yoast generated), but why would that suddenly change? And even more importantly, how do I fix it?

Huge Ranking drop without touching the page
I was ranked #5 for the keyword "Become a Sportscaster" - had been in the top 10 for months, then all of a sudden dropped to #46. I haven't touched this page in a few months, so I don't think I messed anything up. Any thoughts on why such a dramatic drop would happen? Brian Clapp Founder, SportsTVJobs.com
