Creating Meta Tags for a Web Hosting company
-
My client has recently had his site rewritten by a company which supplies a website/hosting/seo service. The client still wants to use me for establishing his site locally and for SEM. My problem is that the code is not accessible to me. They have set up GA tracking which feeds into the reports dashboard. There is no way of actually access the raw data.
When I asked for access to the GA account I got this message from bOline solutions:
"Your SEO consultant will need to create a new GA account and then add the meta tag to the reports tab of your site"
Because I am still very much learning GA I do not know what meta tag they are referring too. I'm therefore stuck as to how to create it. I've started learning about "Google Tag Manager" and am working through "Digital Analytics Fundementals", I've a feeling this is just a question of terminology - can anyone more experience in the subject help me?

Hello Andera
You are quite right. I don't know why I fly into flap when someone says something I don't understand. That is what I'd requested (via the client). But got the aforementioned response back.
Thanks for the cool clear accurate advice. Will try again:)

Hi Catherine!
I would have thought that giving your Google login access to the GA web property/view would be a better solution. If a GA account/property/view already exists, there really should be no reason to create a new account just for the purpose of viewing.
Also, it could be wise to connect the GA account to Google Webmaster Tools if this has not already been done.
Best regards,
Anders

Query on Implementing Product Impression Via Tag Manager?
Hi All, I have to implement Product Impression tracking as per this - https://developers.google.com/tag-manager/enhanced-ecommerce#product-impressions but In our product listing page we show 33 products in total. If we need to track the product impression of only those products which are visible currently in the screen. If we have 3 products in one row, then there should be 3 product impressions and when we do 2nd scroll then again 6 product impression and so on. How can we implement this? In this guide - https://developers.google.com/tag-manager/enhanced-ecommerce#product-impressions nothing mention like such things. In my case we I scroll the page on 1st scroll only 33 impression fall down even though I am able to see only 3 products. Hope you understood what I mean?

Webmaster Tools, why does it show 486 pages submitted to web, and only 40 indexed?
I am confused on what a client account shows in WMTs, client account is http://multiview.com. They have a graph showing 486 pages submitted to web, but only 40 are indexed. Also, they recently re-launched, i.e in April 2014, and the new site has about 40 pages indexed.... so I am guessing that the 486 number relates to all the pages that are showing errors in retrieving...i.e. 28 soft 404 errors, 10 access denied errors, 808 not found errors. Does this make sense to explain why there is such a gap between 486 and 40?

Client's Google Analytics account access is 'user' only from previous web developer
Just wondering if you have any advice on the following scenario: Client's GA account was set-up by a previous web developer. The client's GA account is a user account (not admin). When we request from the previous web developer that the account access be changed to admin, the web developer says they can't do that as we'll then have access to all the other GA accounts within their account. Does this mean we'll have to create a new GA profile for the client and lose all historic GA data? Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Dup Meta dscsriptions
I keep getting this condition in Google Webmaster Tools HTML improvements under Duplicate meta descriptions <a id="zip_6-anchor" class="zippedsection_title">Hawaii Vacation Blog has all the information you'll need to plan your Hawaii vacation. We have tips</a> /blog/page/4//blog/page/4/?level=album&id=0&sortby=caption&sortdir=ASC/blog/page/4/?level=album&id=14&sortby=caption&sortdir=desc/blog/page/4/?level=picture&id=143/blog/page/4/?level=picture&id=147/blog/page/4/?level=picture&id=166/blog/page/4/?level=picture&id=171/blog/page/4/?level=picture&id=213/blog/page/4/?level=picture&id=52/blog/page/4/?level=picture&id=87 The problem is that this cannot be duplicate meta descriptions because all of this is one page. Anyone have this situation before or can explain why Google see a single page with duplicate meta descriptions?

Google News traffic spike mystery; referring URLs all blank, Omniture tags didn't fire.
Our content is occasionally featured in Google News. We recently have had two episodes where this happened, but (a) nearly all the referring URLs were blank, and (b) our backend logs show 3-4x more requests for the article in question than Omniture does. In other words, hundreds of thousands of visitors requested a URL from our site (as proven by the traffic logs), but don't seem to have come from Google News (because HTTP_REFERER was blank), and didn't execute the onpage javascript tag to notify Omniture of the pageview. Perhaps this has nothing to do with Google News, but it is too strong a coincidence that the two times we were on there recently, the same thing happened: big backend traffic spike that is not seen by Omniture. It is as if Google News causes browsers to pre-fetch our article without executing the javascript on the page. And without sending a referring URL. Has anyone else seen anything like this before? Stats from the recent episode:
Reporting & Analytics | | mcglynn
- 835,000 HTTP requests for the article URL (logged by our servers) - these requests came from 280,000 distinct IP addresses (70% US) - the #1 referring URL is blank. This accounts for 99.4% of requests. Which, in itself, is hard to believe. These people had to come from somewhere. I believe browsers don't pass HTTP_REFERER when you click from an SSL page to a non-SSL page, but I think Google News doesn't bounce users to SSL by default. That said, we do see other content pages with 70-90% blank referring URLs. Rarely 99+% though.0
