Text to HTML Important ?
-
I'm trying to find out if the text to html % is really that important ? We run an e-commerce site & I'm trying to push for a redesign of a responsive website, with more images and make it more appealing to the customer, but another member of the company doesn't like the idea of more attractive website and just wants to flood the website with text and keeps saying about the text to html ratio. Is this a really important factor or would a more appealing 'lookwise' website be better ?
Cheers

That probably means they just have less html code, since it's a ratio (text/code).
Text to code ratio has no impact on SEO, and I'm surprised some SEOs still obsess over it. If you have an incredibly code heavy page, Google may have trouble crawling it, but that's more about the sheer amount of code vs any kind of ratio.
That being said, you should try to keep your html code to a minimum, as excess code will increase the file size of your page, leading to a longer load time which is a poor user experience and can have a negative impact on rankings.

Thanks for the reply. I generally thought that was the case and it wasn't a major factor like he is making out. Whilst analysing our text to html ratio and comparing it to other websites such; I've noticed on appearance they don't seem to have a lot of text present but have a much better ratio than ours ... any idea why this is ?

In general the "text 2 html" ratio is smaller within a shop. This is just because of it
s business nature. You know that there are more than 200 ranking factors and that text is still a very important one BUT it
s not the only one that should fit.User experience (you refer to responsive design), page speed and much more is also very important, especially in an e-commerce environment! If you just do a good job by creating unique article descriptions than you
ve done the best according to the text 2 html ratio within a shop system. There are several ways to push that by having a blog or using customer feedback on articles and services but I wouldn
t do more than that. The rest should be done on the html basis, social media, adwords or whatever else...

Alt Text Best Practices
I am working on alt texts for my WordPress website. I've done a bit of research and read best practices, but I am a bit confused on how to write some of the alt texts because my entire site includes images. I know this is a big no-no and I am working with my team to get the site SEO-optimized (better text to image ratio). However, in the meantime, I need to make sure that I have some alt texts for my images. Can someone help with the following questions: 1.) I have the same "close" button in 4 locations. Can I use "close" as the alt text four times? Or should I explain where the close button is or what it closes? 2.) If my image is only text and it is more than 125 characters, is this a problem? Should I use longdesc=? If so, how do I input that in a WP site? 3.) If I have my logo in 3 locations, should I differentiate the alt text? 4.) If I have FB icon, do I just state Facebook and don't say icon? 5.) I have some background images and they don't really provide relevancy to my site other than aesthetics so should I not have alt attribute? If so, do I just place alt="" in the alt text field or does it have to be in the code? 6.) In WordPress, do I remove the description under “title,” and just put a description under “alt-text?” 7.) Can I repeat alt texts? For example, I have 4 buy now buttons, should the alt text be “buy now” all 4 times or be specific to what they are buying, such as “Buy now – Teatopia Dream On supplement drink?” 8.) I have 4 nutrition label images so can I just state what each label refers to or is it expected to have a long description with all the text on the label? 9.) I have images for desktop vs. mobile. Can I have similar copy for both. The mobile page is not set-up to index so do I even need alt text for the mobile images? 10.) Can I have characters, such as dashes and commas, in the alt text? Does initial cap matter? 11.) For decorative images or when an alt-text is not needed, do I just place alt=”” in the alt text field in WordPress?

Is having a Video important for SEO or is it the time-on-site that's important?
Assuming it's a relevant video, is having a video on your landing page considered a good SEO tactic in and of itself? Meaning, when google crawls the page, will they say "good job, there's a video here." Or is having a video on your landing page something that helps you improve on other ranking factors like increased time on site? So, it would not be the video itself google "likes" but rather the increased User Experience factors that went up. (Crossing my fingers I explained this well enough) Thanks for any input, Ruben

How important is a high listing score in getlisted.org?
I checked Moz out on getlisted and found a score of 28%. I believe this is telling me that Moz does not consider this an important piece(getlisted.org) to a local marketing strategy. Also(as you can see in the image) getlisted shows missing listings when the listings are actually with these directory providers. (Not just Moz, but other companies I do local marketing for.) Plus I've noticed that at the bottom of the page the "unable to contact", Bing has been there for a long time. Is this going to be fixed? My clients know about getlisted.org and they are looking to me for answers on how to get them a higher listing score. Is this a tool that can assist in showing clients how well their listings are showing in local marketing or not? moz-getlisted.jpg

Text Images
I have created an infographic using easel.ly. I want to upload this to my blog but I'm just concerned whether Google will see it as an image or will it be able to read all the text that is on it. Any thoughts?

Should I diversify internal anchor text
In the post penguin era should I diversify my internal anchor text? I have exact match links throughout my site that point to my important pages so should I look at varying the anchor text? I also have exact match terms in my sites navigation such as 'london wedding bands', 'edinburgh wedding bands' etc... I read somewhere that I should remove the 'money term' so that they become 'london', 'edinburgh' etc...Is that they case?

Is creating great content not important for Local seo?
I'm helping a friend out with Local SEO/Google Places and his content is lacking - no blog, no articles, etc. I've read the major "How To" guides for Local seo by Andrew Shotland and David Mihm and their ranking factors but I never see anything about content or linkbuilding (aside from directories).
