My site is always in the top 4 on google, and sometimes goes to #2\. But the site at #1 is always at #1 .. how can i beat them?
-
So i'm sure this is a very generic question.. of course everyone wants to be #1.
We are an ecommerce web site. We have all sorts of products, user ratings, and are loved by our customers. We sell over 3 million a year.
So let me give you some data.. First of all one of the sites that keeps taking the #2 or #3 spot is amazons category for what we sell.. (i'm not sure if I should say who we are here.. as I don't want the #1 spot to realize we are trying to take them over!) Amazon of course has a domain authority of 100. But they never take the #1 spot.
The other site that takes the #2 and #3 spot is not even selling anything. Happens to be a technical term's with the same name wikipedia page! (i wish google would figure out people aren't looking for that!)
Anyways.. every day we bouce back and forth between #4 and #2.. but #1 never changes..
Here are the stats of us verse #1 from moz:
#1: Page Authority: 56.8, Root Domains Linking to page: 158, Domain Authority: 54.6: root domains linking to the root domain 1.42k
my site: Page Authority: 60.6, Root domains linking to the page: 562, Domain Authority: 52.8: root domains linking to the root domain: 1.03k
So they beat us in domain authority SLIGHTLY and in root domains linking to the root domain.
So SEO masters.. what do I do to fix this? Get better backlinks? But how.... I can't just email GQ and ask them to write about us can I?
I'm open to all things.. Maybe i'm not using moz data correctly.. We should at least be #2. We get #2 every other day.

You aren't doing poorly at all!

i wasn't sure about having free shipping in the title. does google see that an penalize you are all .. it's like an add in the title..
But we do offer free shipping. for everyone in the USA.
We do put FREE SHIPPING in our adwords title, but not our organic titles. But people here say to trust you, so in goes FREE SHIPPING.

Thanks for the responses.. we are undergoing a complete responsive site overhaul..with all the goals mentioned above. Speed, etc..
but don't expect that to be ready for nearly 8 months or so. However our first step is creating a responsive home page. .which is going to include mostly highly ranked, best selling, and featured product listings.. (right now we have a few feature products, and a bit of the last 2 blog posts, but no product listings on the home page).
I think that's going to help quite a bit.
Thank you for reminding me that improving the site itself can help just as much... I'll just have to be patient.
AFter all we are between #4 and #2 in a keyword the moz grades as 58% difficulty. We aren't doing THAT bad! People who do find us LOVE us and continue to remain customers.

Thanks!

**These things seem to be more and more important. **
Yes... good addition... we just had some speed work done a couple of weeks ago. Good investment even if no rankings increase results.

As always EGOL's response consists of words to live by - his white hat, good content approach wont only get you where you want to be, it will keep you there no matter what updates Google launches (unless they just go insane).
The only thing I would add is to really look at your website's usability compared to theirs. How is your page load speed compared to theirs? Is their website far easier to navigate? Do you meet ada compliance? If not, do they?
These things seem to be more and more important.

The data that you posted are mainly onpage and offpage metrics. See what you can do to beat these other sites on visitor engagement.... Start with clickthrough rate from the SERPs. See what you can do to elicit clicks away from the other sites...
-- offer a kickass price in the title tag
-- offer immediate free shipping in the title
-- tell them you have the "Secrets to Success"
-- tell them you have "Free Beer"
These will get potential customers onto your website.
Then do things to lower your bounce rate. Offer lots of related content or related products on every page. This will entice people to view another page and keep them on your site longer. I use big image menus for alternative reading on the right side of the page... and the bottom of the article I have a site search box and more reading options... within most articles I have links to related content. Keep them on your site.
Figure out what you can do to have people ask for you by name. Do you have content that brings people back regularly and typing "yourdomain.com" into google search as a navigational query. Regular news, regular blog posts, a continuous stream of contests, daily deals, giveaways, coupons. When you have this kind of stuff people return to your site regularly. If google sees that people are asking for you by name then you might get a boost. (this takes real work btw)
These are just a few things to try.. might not work but even if they don't they each bring other benefits.

Follow up.. why do google ranking bounce around so much.. i'm always in the top 4.. I was #4 this morning.. just checked and now i'm #2.. and my main competition is #3.. (i check with moz).. why can't google agree with itself for a few hours who should rank where?

Can Someone explain why this site ranks #1 and #2? I am confused.
Hi everyone, Here is my problem. This site: https://247ride.com/town-cars/ ranks for bunch of really good keywords. Such as lax car service, car service to lax etc. The keyword does not appear in Title tag, and only partially on meta description. The site's DA is 23 and PA is 22. Less than 29 links overall, and linking domains 8. Why in your opinion Google is ranking this page #1 and #2 for many competitive keywords. I know it's a hard question to ask but any input would be greatly appreciated. I am working really hard to rank for same keywords and so far i am at #11 position. Thanks in advance, Davit

Does Google frown on using 3 different page titles with same content to secure the top 3 results in SERPs?
Is it frowned upon by Google to create 3 different pages with the sames content yet different titles to secure the top three results in SERPs? For example: Luxury Care Homes in Liverpool Care Homes in Liverpool Private Care Homes in Liverpool The page titles are different with slightly different meta data but the user content is exactly the same, would this be considered a cheeky win or negative to rankings?

Can you combine YouTube and on-site hosting as part of a Video SEO strategy?
My question is sparked by how Moz uses its Whiteboard Friday videos. We are currently capturing video stories from our customers. Its excellent and engaging content we'd love to share with a wider audience. I'm puttting together a strategy for video SEO to drive traffic to our site and Moz's approach intrigues me. As we know, the world of video rich snippets changed in 2014 - their appearance in universal search reduced dramatically and what remained was almost entirely (90%+) YouTube snippets. Useless if you're looking to drive traffic to your own site. Of course, it's still possible to earn SERPs for video in Google video search, but I imagine the search volume is greatly reduced. From what I can see, first Moz host their Whiteboard Friday video on Wistia, complete with transcript and whiteboard capture. Suprisingly, I see no Schema markup for video. Can anyone shed a light as to why this might be a good idea? 3-6 months later the same video is then uploaded to youtube, with the same title and a similar description. The end result is multiple SERPs in universal search, almost always in the following order: the original post on Moz a YouTube result complete with a video rich sippet This has me asking the following questions - I have some theories - but i'd love your input: Why use two platforms to upload and host the video? Why not just YouTube? Why avoid using Schema on the Wistia video hosted on the original post? Surely, this would allow an additional result in Google Video Search? Why wait 3-6 months after the first post to upload the YouTube video?

Keyword On Page 1 Everywhere but Google (Site Specific)
Website: www.wheelchairparts.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Mike.Bean
Keyword: wheelchair parts My website is #1 or #2 on almost every search engine besides Google. Google has us bouncing between the bottom of page 2 and top of 3. However we are on page one for "wheelchairparts". I need to get a link building campaign going for this site. I feel it's more difficult for ecommerce websites and nothing seems to fit in with Rand's Mozcon 2016 Link Building talk except hacks. I need to find a flywheel. Either way, my question is what can I do other than link building to get on page 1 of Google for the term "wheelchair parts"? Thanks in advance! - Mike Bean1 -
Does Google index language flags/links in header, even if only 1 is visible at a time?
Hi, I want to pass link juice from my English website to my other languages. Does Google index language flags/links in header? Only 1 flag is visible at a time, and from what i´ve read, Google does not index content that is not visible to the user without clicks, like content behind tabs. I´m guessing language drop downs could fall under the same category as well...? Any knowledge on this... thank you for your time!

My Website Has a Google Penalty, But I Can't Disavow Links
I have a client who has definitely been penalized, rankings dropped for all keywords and hundreds of malicious backlinks when checked with WebMeUp....However, when I run the backlink portfolio on Moz, or any other tool, they don't appear anyone, and all the links are dead when I click on the actual URL. That being said, I can't disavow links that don't exist, and they don't show up in Webmaster Tools, but I KNOW this site has been penalized. Also- I noticed this today (attached). Any suggestions? I've never come across this issue before. xT6JNJC.png

3 Wordpress sites 1 Tumblr site coming under 1domain(4subdomains) WPMU: Proper Redirect?
Hey Guys, witnessSF.org (WP), witnessLA.org(Tumblr), witnessTO.com(WP), witnessHK.com(WP), and witnessSEOUL.com(new site no redirects needed) are being moved over to sf.ourwitness.com, la.ourwitness.com and so forth. All under on large Wordpress MU instance. Some have hundreds of articles/links others a bit less. What is the best method to take, I understand there are easy redirects, and the complete fully manual one link at a time approach. Even the WP to WP the permalinks are changing from domain.com/date/post-name to domain.com/post-name? Here are some options: Just redirect all previous witinessla.org/* to la.ourwitness.org/ (automatic direct all pages to home page deal) (easiest not the best)2) Download Google Analytics top redirected domains about 50 urls have significant ranking and traffic (in LA's sample) and just redirect those to custom links. (most bang for the buck for the articles that rank manually set up to the correct place) 3) Best of the both worlds may be possible? Automated perhaps?I prefer working with .htaccess vs a redirect plugin for speed issues. Please advise. Thanks guys!
