Product Descriptions & SEO
-
I got another small question for my price comparison website that I run
An example product from my site, to which this question relates http://goo.gl/XDTUNs
I have about 600 products which I track, and the product description I have for each is as follows;
Paragraph 1 - Standard copy which is contained on all products, only the product name / keyword is changed "Easily compare prices below on a XXX"
Paragraph 2 = Blatant, 100% copy of the product description from Amazon
Paragraph 3 -Â Standard copy which is contained on all products, only the product name / keyword is changed "Always read your chosen stores product description before buying your XXX"
Firstly, I am now on a mission to create unique descriptions instead of the Amazon ones I foolishly copied. My question is, are the standard paragraph 1 and 3 which are in all my product ok? Or should this be avoided?
Should my unique description be paragraph 1, or can it remain in the middle?
The reason for the three separate paragraphs was so I could mention to keyword 3 times, which is what is suggested on the Moz page grader.
Thanks so much!

Agreed - the keyword usage guideline is just a guideline - if it's leading to a high ratio of thin-to-unique content, I'd probably not worry about. In other words, I'd drop some of the thin content. As others said, it's more of a ratio situation and a bit gray - the more unique content you can get in that second paragraph that adds value, the better. As it stands, these pages are certainly looking a little thin.

Good comments from the others here.
Focus on the unique description as the primary one shown to users (further up the page) unless the manufacturer's is better. You can also label that as "Manufacturer's Description:" to differentiate it from the content you wrote. Some users will even hide it on a tab that is crawlable but has to be clicked by the user, which is fine.
As Takeshi mentioned, the small amount of duplicated/templated text should be a problem as long as it's not 80% of the page content.

Hi Mark,
A lot of sites use product descriptions either provided by the distributor or found on large e-commerce sites, like Amazon. However, this doesn't necessarily help you stand out.
You could leave the common description you have so far and then expand a little further using your own content. I'd definitely take Takeshi's advice on making some standard copy for certain categories with lots of products.

A little bit of templatized text shouldn't hurt, as long as you have sufficient unique content that distinguishes the page. If you have different categories of content, you could also create several different templates for each category to mix things up.

Hello Mark,
This could potentially lead to duplicate / thin content issues on your site which could harm your ranking.
At the end you mentioned that you choose three paragraphs like this to mention the keyword three times because the Moz Page Grader told you so. The tool is merely a helpful hint towards an optimized page. You should always write the content for the user and not for the search engine. A good piece of text about a certain subject will naturally contain the keyword several times. Three is a good average which is indicated by the Page Grader.
Writing your own descriptions of the content is a good idea instead of the Amazon ones even though it sounds like it's gonna be a lot of work to do so. Whenever possible try to write a fully unique piece of text of 300 words or so for each product. This is a pain to do, but in terms of SEO it will do wonders above standard templates.

Does changing/shortening a url hurt SEO?
Hi all, I am in the process of making small optimization changes to my site. I noticed Moz identified quite a few URLs that could be shortened. I intend to shorten these URLs and create 301 redirects to ensure website users land on the right page. My question is, will this change in URL damage rankings and engagement(assuming the URL remains content relevant)? I have read in some places that when creating URL redirects for a change in domain, people saw a dip in rankings and engagement. I, however, am not intending to change the main domain of the site, but rather the URL slug. Any thoughts?

When To And When To Not Use AMP
Hi All, I hope someone might be able to help me with this. I am looking at implementing AMP on a website. I have been doing a stack of research into advantages of using AMP etc. However I am struggling to find an answer to when I should not / where not to be implementing AMP. More specifically I see large sites that are running AMP but it does not seem to be on all pages, how is the best way to determine when or when not I should be using AMP. Thanks In Advance, Mark

I have an eCommerce Site with in some cases, 100s of versions of the same product. How do I avoid "duplicate content" without writing literally 100s of unique product descriptions for the exact same product?
For instance, one item where the only difference is the Sports Team Logo is different, etc... or It comes in a variety of color Variants. I'm using Shopify.

Bold & Italics Best Practice?
Hi All, Does anyone know the official best practice use of bold and italic fonts? If I have a long page of text- 800 words + I usually bold a few sentences to allow the user to be able to read only the bold on the page, and still make sense of the article. By reading all the bold it will kind of make sense and the user gets the point of the article. This wasn't really done for SEO purposes, but so the reader gets to the bottom of the page in a reasonable amount of time, and gets all the key points and facts of the article. I was advised not to do this and to just bold/italic the keyword/phrases the article was written to rank for. I would like to know anyone else's opinion/strategy on using bold/italics effectively and within best practices. What's the official word? Thank you for your help. Ian

URL Domain Used in Meta Description
Today I was asked if using a domain url in your meta description can have a negative impact on your website. This description includes a list of the homepage url, but directs visitors to a different internal page of the website. My concern fell with directing visitors to a different page of the site, but promoting the homepage in the description/snippet. With Penguin 2.1 release on the 4th, I'm very cautious of my links/urls. What are your thoughts behind this? What are the possible, if any negative impacts this could have on a site? This URL does have a brand name as so the Title.

Overlength Meta description
Hi, Has anyone got an answer to why a meta description would be showing characters well above 160. The current Meta description is only 10 characters in length but I wanted to know why Google would display so many characters. Cheers Phil

Facebook Comments for SEO
Hi, I read few opinions over the potential value of implementing Facebook Comments on internal pages and I got that search engines don't crawl the content generated7written by Facebook Comments. So do you confirm that from a SEO prospective this is not valuable at all? Would you suggest to implement this for example within every product page like Yelp has? Imagine all the value of UGC lost and not read by search engine crawler... In which case would you suggest to implement FB Comments and why? Thanks a lot! Cheers, Nino
