When Somebody Copies your content What should you do?
-
I wrote an article in 2011 A Brief History of Benjamin Moore Paint on my website ( I am a painting contractor). It is a content creators win; sited as an authoritative article on wikipedia.
Benjamin Moore Paint company has copied my content on their own corporate website; a deep page. Is this hurting, helping, or neutral?
-
If it is an exact copy of your article then it is possible that it could cause a problem with Google.
If you decide to contact them find out in advance if they are a real Benjamin Moore company. If they are then your chances of success are greater, in my opinion. If they are not I think it would be hard to get cooperation.
Decide what you want to accomplish. Do you want it removed, do you want a link, do you want an rel=canonical?
I would want the rel=canonical AND have my company name listed as the author and copyright holder in the article.
I would offer them a choice.... A) remove the article..... B) display it with attribution and rel=canonical (and give instructions for how that should be done)
If they choose B then their web dev could get in touch if there are questions about how to do what you want.

EGOL,
Great insights; thank you. Should I take action? Is this polish site duplication harming my website in the eyes of Google?
The site is in English on my browser. I assumed the site is endorsed by Benjamin Moore but now I am thinking this was an incorrect analysis.

I know the content is mine because I wrote it. I do recognize that in the new world I need to take steps to protect my copyrights.

The site that has a copy of your work is in Polish. It is on a .pl domain.
So, is it an offical Benjamin Moore site?
Another question is.... What copyright law applies when a USA author is infringed upon by a Polish company? Do you have any status there?
So, Robert's advice to "be nice" might be more important here than it would be if you are contacting a US company. If you have no status they can rip your work and use it as they please.
I also see that the site was built by a third party company. Lots of web developers in the USA infringe out of ignorance and that is what might have happened on the Polish Benjamin Moore domain. They might have told the developer.. ."build us a site" and he outsourced to a person who works even below the Polish wage base.

Hi Robert,
Thank you for your response. I assume you are suggesting that I file a complaint because the duplicate content is hurting my website rank? I am usually nice but thanks for the reminder. My page ranks higher then the manufacturers page for the copy.
I did not use Google authorship in March 2011; is it worth while to establish it now for that article?

John
First, you can file a DMCA complaint with Google from Google support. I would suggest you need to be very sure this was your original content. I would also check it with Copyscape, etc. If it is yours, and you are a dealer of their paints, I would first contact them. Typically, you would contact the webmaster after doing a whois lookup. In your case I would assume you have contacts at the company.
The words of Patrick Swayze in his rules to bouncers ring true here, "Above all, be nice!" If you start out with, hey did you guys realize, or I did not realize you appreciated my marketing efforts so much, would you like to work together?, it is better than ringing someone up and calling them a thief. If you copyrighted your piece that would be great. If not, did you set up authorship in Google? That is another clear timeline. Also, you should be careful to check their site in Archive.org for any similar content before yours.
Again, no matter what, be nice. If, it turns out they had content similar to yours before yours was written and you approached nicely, they are less likely to tell you to take yours down.Hope this helps.

How much should I pay for one hour of content creation work?
Hi I have recently been looking for some new content creators to work with. And I recently asked a blogger that I know of how much he would charge for some content creations. I told him that I'm looking for some good compelling content that is about 400 to 500 words. And he told me that he would charge $180 an hour. I sorta feel like that's a bit to much, but I don't want to jump to conclusions without any advice from you all. I'm very well versed in my SEO and do most of the work for my site. But I think a fresh touch would really be helpful.

Blog Content if Google has stated it doesn't like your blog?
Hi guys, In the new 'mobile usability' tab in Webmaster Tools, Google has stated that our blog isn't offering a good experience for users. Something we already knew and I want to change, but I can't get the budget approved to complete the work. I was just wondering if you think Google isn't going to hold my content very high as a result. I want to produce more content on our blog around our valuable keywords in hope to improve our rankings, but if Google isn't holding our site in high regard I'm thinking there may not be much point in it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Brian

Reposting My Original Content
I wanted to know how I should repost my original content from my blog to other sites, obviously quality ones and legacy style content. I don't want get hit with any duplicate content or spam type penalties, but want to further spread some of my content from my blog to get it noticed and drive traffic and leads. Do I submit the posts as is, then put a link to the original source and if so, how many sites can i safely repost the same piece of content too? I am not trying to do anything sneaky, just want it to spread my best content to a good amount high authority sites. I already do social bookmarking and Facebook, twitter etc.

Possible to recover from Thin/Duplicate content penalties?
Hi all, first post here so sorry if in wrong section. After a little advice, if I may, from more experienced SEOers than myself with regards to writing off domains or keeping them. To cut a long story short I do a lot of affiliate marketing, back in the day (until the past 6 months or so) you could just take a merchant's datafeed and with some SEO outrank them for individual products. However, since the Google Panda update this hasn't worked as well and now it's much hard to do - which is better for the end user. The issue I have is that I got lazy and tried to see if I could still get some datafeeds to rank with only duplicate content. The sites ranked very well at first but after a couple of weeks died massively. They went from 0 to 300 hits a day in a matter of 24 hours and back to 2 hits a day. The sites now not rank for anything which is obviously because they are duplicate content. The question I have is are these domains dead, can they be saved? Not talking about duplicate content but as a domain itself. I used about 10 domains to test things, they ranged from DA 35 to DA 45 - one of the tests being can a domain with reasonable DA rank for duplicate content. Seeing as the test didn't work I want to use the domains for proper sites with proper unique content, however so far although the new unique content is getting indexed it is suffering from the same ranking penalties the duplicate (and now deleted content) pages had. Is it worth trying to use these domains, will Google finally remove the penalty when they notice that the bad content is no longer on the site or are the domains very much dead? Many thanks

Duplicate content because of tag
Dear Expert, I use several tags in my single post (www.rumahapp.com), for example when i post something about new game release i would use these tags: Publisher name, game rating and game genre. The problem is seomoz crawl my page and said that i have duplicate content between http://www.rumahapp.com/tag/com2us/ and http://www.rumahapp.com/tag/homerun-battle-2 how do i solve this? is this mean that i shouldn't use tag in my post? thank you
