Prevent link juice to flow on low-value pages
-
Hello there!
Most of the websites have links to low-value pages in their main navigation (header or footer)... thus, available through every other pages.
I especially think about "Conditions of Use" or "Privacy Notice" pages, which have no value for SEO.
What I would like, is to prevent link juice to flow into those pages... but still keep the links for visitors. What is the best way to achieve this?
- Put a rel="nofollow" attribute on those links?
- Put a "robots" meta tag containing "noindex, nofollow" on those pages?
- Put a "Disallow" for those pages in a "robots.txt" file?
- Use efficient Javascript links? (that crawlers won't be able to follow)

Mmh, good point. Never heard that "privacy policy page" could be a trust signal. Is there an article somewhere that talks about this?
Well, I took those two pages as an example... but my question was about avoiding link juice to flow on non-SEO pages in general.
Thanks a lot for your answers!

Exactly, and what I also try to explain to people is that privacy policy type page is additional signal for Google when they try to understand the type of site you are and how trustworthy it is. Why in the world would you noindex something like that?

As I understand it nofollow still dilutes your link juice even though it does not pass PR (theoretically).
Google made this announcement to combat PR sculpting in 2009. Here is a post from Rand about it.
Unlsee something has changed that I am not aware of you could link in an iFrame and Google will not see it, nor will it dilute your PR passed out.

Great suggestions. I've recently combined some pages (login/register, about/contact/ToS/privacy, and a few others) and have been very happy with the results. I removed 8 links from every page.
I am also thinking about removing some more links from my product pages, to try and keep the most juice on those pages. Those pages don't need the same navigation as the homepage.

It depends on what your purpose is.
If you want them totally block from being index then putting the page in the robots.tx fil or using a robots meta tag would work fine.
If you just want to de-emphasize the page to the search engines you can use nofollows or javascript links on footer/header links.
One thing that we have done is to combine some of these pages (terms and privacy) into one page to cut down on the number of total links on each page.
You could also not include the privacy page link on every page (depending on your site) but just link it from certain pages that collect sensitive data (near the form).
I hope this helps. The main thing to remember is that each site is different so you will have to adjust your tactics depending on precisely what you are trying to accomplish.

For an e-commerce product category page that has several funnels to specific products, for SEO purposes does it matter whether the category page's overview content is above or below those funnels?
We manage an e-commerce site. On a category page, there are several funnels to specific products. We moved the category overview content below those funnels to make it easier for users to quickly get to products. Seems more user friendly to me, but could that move of the main content to the lower part of the page be a negative ranking factor?

Shifting target keyword to a new page, how do we rank the internal page?
I have been targeting one keyword for home page that was ranking between the postilion 6-7 but was never ranking on 1st as there were 2 highly competitive keywords targeted on the same page, I changed the keyword to an internal service page to rank it on 1st, I have optimized the content as well but the home page is still ranking on 11th, how do I get the internal page rank on that keyword

Product Page Links
I have a product category page at https://www.hurtlegear.com.au/s1000rr/ which currently has 38 products on it. Problem is, all the product titles start with the name of the text: "bmw s1000rr" (because that's what they are) - so that means there are 38 anchored internal links on that page, all starting with the same keyword. You can see how that might look to the Google crawler. Recently that page dropped from around 15 to outside the top 100, and Moz tells me that the page is keyword stuffed with "bmw s1000rr" (no suprise) so I'm guessing that may be the reason the page has disappeared out of the SERPs. I don't really want to change all the product titles (then they wouldn't make sense) so I'm just wondering if there is any way around this? Is there some way of telling Google that this is a product category page and therefore to ignore the anchor text in all of those product links? Can/should the links have some kind of markup on them? Or is the page beyond help? Basically I'm looking at a way of keeping the product titles as they are, but avoiding a page penalty from Google somehow. I'm a bit of a newbie, any suggestions would be most appreciated. Cheers, Graeme

Limiting On Page Links
Right now, we have about 160 or so links on the home page. It's been recommended that we keep it to under 100, though that's not as big of a deal as it once was. Is it helpful to make a bunch of those links "nofollow" in order to preserve link juice? Is it going to make a difference, or be at all helpful? I assume it won't be harmful, especially as a bunch of them are to the same page but on different sections of the page. Would live your advice and thoughts! Thanks!

Page title
So if we have a main category page on our site (mines an ecommerce site), do we go for more than that main keyword phrase for that category of products, or is it better to just keep it by itself, and not utilize the 65-70 characters available?

Duplicate pages
Hi, I am using a CMS that generates dynamic urls that according to the SeoMoz tool will be indexed as duplicate pages. The pages in questions are forms, blog-posts etc. that are not crucial to achieve ranking for. I do worry though about the consequences of having 20 (non-duplicate)pages with static urls and about 100 pages that are duplicates with dynamic urls. What consequences will this have for the speed that the robots crawl the site and could there be negative effects on ranking for the entire domain?

Page Authority
I have recently optimised a set of images for a client of ours: I'm looking through all the PA of these newly optimised images, and have varying PA {from SEOmoz toolbar} I understand that internal linking will pass link juice, and obviously external links will add to the overall PA. I have several pages with a PA of 36: { Fairly deep pages} Yet they have no external or internal links going to them. My question is "How can a page gain any authority when it has no visible links pointing at it?" Obviously there must be a link pointing at it {internally} as Google wouldn't have crawled the page right? Also lets say all the keywords are of equal competitiveness would the keywords with highest PA rank higher than those on O PA pages. Many Thanks
