White hat techniques for difficult niches
-
Hi all. We've been approached by a client in the online gambling sector about white hat link building. Much of our focus is on guest blogging, but most sites have a no gambling policy. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for link building ethically for tricky niches.

Go to different conferences and meet other people from your industry. It is the best way no matter if it is gambling, betting or other topics that your website is about.
Another thing you can do to build links is trying to create something that ONLY can be found on your website. I know a few that have had great success with infographics in the gambling niche.

I'm really interested to see the responses to this one! I'm currently working with a brand who sit on the fence between the adult industry and fashion industry. For me, it would be an awful lot easier if they moved their products and overall brand towards the fashion side of things as many websites get put off by the 'suggestive nature' of the site, even though there is no nudity.
So far, my strategy has been to outreach to the leading voices within the adult industry, along with developing relationships with similar brands. So far, there have been a few collaborations, and it's going well, but the scope to this strategy is limited.
In your case, perhaps you could reach out to some of the prominent online players? You could also position your blog to be 'against' the rest of the online gambling world. The latter suggestion is possibly a recipe for disaster with backlash from competitors, but if it gets you noticed for the right reasons, I think you could be on to a winner. It's such a crowded (and spammy) marketplace, I'd suggest you to take Seth Godin's advice in Purple Cow in order to stand out.
I'm really interested to see what other suggestions come from this Q.
PS. Dubs and Kyle both make good suggestions too!

What about playing off of the things that make this company a legitimate company unlike the scammy/spammy online gaming sites. Perhaps expand on what they do in their community, highlighting team members, or choose a charity to sponsor were proceeds are donated on a monthly basis. Essentially making a emotional link to end users.
From there you could also create a blog that focuses on more natural yet still relevant topics like poker strategies, how to play black jack, infographic on odds of winning a big jackpot, etc.. You could also have contest that could tie into social media, perhaps have end users choose what top prizes would be for payout in the next contest?
I think the biggest thing you need to get away from is trying to build the link but instead build the community. Like we have seen with MOZ a strong community will bring in new customers and new links.
Hope this helps!

Yikes... an online gambling site! I'd try to focus on social media link building as much as possible. The guest blogs are going to be very difficult given the subject matter. Build out the social profiles and generate content to share on the networks.

Automatic links from other domains when we create a new landing page - Is this a spammy technique?
Hi everyone, Recently we've discovered 2-3 sites (which we own the domains names) and these sites seem to automatically create links to our new landing pages on our main site. Those sites also can't be accessed in your browser as it redirects straight to our main website. So, for example, we create a new landing page on our main site, and then Moz has been picking up links to this page from these other domains with text such as "Book now". I think historically someone in the company set up loads of sites with redirects and there must be something automatically happening. Is this likely to be a spammy technique? Ie we seem to be getting "follow" links from other domains every time we create a new page." Also as this could be quite a negative thing we've discovered I can't really give our out business links, but really appreciate your tips and advice. I'm trying to work out what to do if this is a spammy technique and also affecting our trust scores etc and what we should do about it. Thanks for your help and input. 🙂Mike

Is RU white hat link building possible?
According to my RU content/SEO person all the major websites/blogs in RU asked for payment to post an article... and there is no advice in RU/Yandex for implementing white hat methods. I work for a gaming company, so trying white hat is difficult in any country.... but still seems worth trying. Does anyone have experience or advice about RU link building?

How to find keywords in super-small niche?
hi I try to find good keywords to rank a “dog day care” site for and can't seem to find anything that makes sense. This is a company that sells franchises of their service – dog day care. So there is a “mother site” where they advertise service in general and try to sell franchises. If you go “pet franchise”; “pet franchises”; “dog day care franchise” etc – you get virtually zero traffic keywords. On the other hand if I use “doggy day care” it will bring mostly people who are looking for a place to leave their dog for a day. Doesn't make sense either way. Same goes for local sites. If you look at “doggy day care location” it brings next to nothing. Using “doggy day care” without specific location doesn't make sense either, as certain location applies only to people living in say 50 mile radius. I would really appreciate any ideas how to approach this. How to promote small “dog day care” franchising company? And how to promote particular locations? Thank you in advance, JJ

White hat on a small business budget.
How can a small internet marketing firm build links and do SEO for small business clients? Seems to me the white hat link building would be next to impossible to do while making money at the same time. Say a small business client has $300 per month to spend on internet marketing... how can you possibly do white hat work for that kind of money? If you can... then how?

When searching for high quality links, in a niche area such as real estate, does page rank factor into a search or is page / domain authority the most important factor?
After having employed many different methods for finding good link partners I am now finding it more difficult to reach out and identify good quality links for a niche area such as real estate. Does page rank factor into the search much or is it better to focus on page / domain authority as a major factor?
