Duplicate Theme, different Content, competing keywords?

Hello,
We have 2 versions of a website. Notes: They will be the same theme, and slightly different images but the written content is different. SEO optimization is the same for both sites targeting the same the city and they will be competing for certain keywords mainly vanity keywords.
So we have websites examples:
http://mycompanytor.com http://mycompanytoronto.com How does google handle 2 websites like this, will one get penalized? Or will it treated as 2 different sites, even though the company name which is the brand shows up on the main url?Thanks for your help

Sorry for the late reply. The reason why we need a second website is because one has adult orientated images.
As google places does not allow nude.http://mycompanytor.com - Has the Google Plus Business - Non Nude
http://mycompanytoronto.com - Has the Company Branding - Nude.I hope this is clear.

I'm going to address this purely from a Local SEO perspective. The main issue here is that having more than one website for the same business can lead to NAP+W consistency issues and big confusion for Google. I'll explain this.
As Google crawls the web, what they 'want' to find, in order to be clear about the data they have about your business, is multiple references to your business' name, address, phone number and website address. If we put ourselves in the bots' shoes, let's say we find a listing for your business at YP.com with your name, address and phone number being associated with domain number one. A-okay. But then we go to Yelp and find your name, address and phone number being associated with domain number two. Which of these two references are we, as the bots, supposed to believe?
So, the problem is that you are creating confusion for Google, and, it's vital to mention, probably for your customers, too. You are also creating confusion for any of the major players in the Local Search Ecosystem which draw data from various sources and distribute it to other sources. The fact that the two domains are so similar may even be adding further murkiness to the scenario for the various entities.
When Google becomes confused about your NAP, it is believed that various problems can result, including ranking failures, because of Google's lack of trust in the data they've gathered about your business.
Because of this, I almost never recommend a multi-site approach to any local business. With a few exceptions, it's simply a better idea to build a single, authoritative website for your brand and link all of your various assets to it. If you find it absolutely necessary to keep two websites, my advice is as follows:

Do not put any part of your NAP in crawlable text on the second domain. No name, address or phone number.

Do not link to this second domain from any other property, including your own website, your citations, offsite content or anything else in any way that associates this second website with any part of your business NAP

Do not duplicate any content of any kind between the two websites.
When you look at this list of provisos, it may become even clearer why having two websites just isn't of much benefit. I'm not sure I'm understanding what you've explained about having one of the websites due to considerations about Google+. Could you not just own that second domain and 301 redirect it to your authoritative domain, without having a second website? Just a thought. I hope this is helpful!

The Main reason as to we are having the 2 websites is
http://mycompanytor.com - Has the Google Plus Business
http://mycompanytoronto.com - Has the Company Branding.One thing is though that the phone number is the same.

can I ask why concentrate on two different websites, without knowing what you would be selling / listing its a bit difficult, but as Moosa said having the same address / telephone number google might think they are the same business and link them, but more importantly why do you want two different domains.
In my opinion your spending time creating great unique content on two different sites, managing two different domains etc - why not simply put all the content onto one great site (rather than two good sites) and 301 one url to the other. It would be easier to get one great website higher up the SERPs rather than trying to get two good sites to link.
All your efforts would be to get links to one site, rather than two different domains, you would be ineffective splitting your domain authority (doesn't quite work evenly like that).
But if you really do need to have two different websites and are willing to put in the extra work, the best thing to do would be get them listed separately on Google places (ideally at a different address), have different contact details, names on their so that search engines don't try and link them.

Will the company name and title tags if your doing company + phrases also match up on both? How different is the content? Same topics and format? What's your reasoning behind having two separate sites from the same company competing for same/similar keywords?
I would try to differentiate as much as possible using separate hosting accounts or c-blocks, or take it even further with separate hosts.

You got two different domains that have the same themes with slight difference of color and images but the content on both websites are completely different.
If this is exactly what you said then there should be no problem and Google in my opinion should consider those two domain names are two different websites.
Domain sounds like a local business so I believe having the same business address may give a hint to Google that they are actually similar business (if it really is!) but technically they are two different domains in the eye of Google.

How do I set up 2 businesses that work together but are ran seperately with two separate websites but similar content?
How do I set up these sites so that they will not be negatively affecting their SEO efforts? I have 2 businesses with the same owner. Business A manufactures nurse call systems and Business B installs them. They are run separately with two websites. The content is very similar because the business that installs them describes the different products on their website. These are the two sites: intercallsystems.com and nursecallny.com , My thought was on nursecallny.com when you click on the nav link "Nurse Call Systems" you would be directed to the intercell website. Would this be the best method? Thank you for your help!

How does duplicate content work when creating location specific pages?
In a bid to improve the visibility of my site on the Google SERP's, I am creating landing pages that were initially going to be used in some online advertising. I then thought it might be a good idea to improve the content on the pages so that they would perform better in localised searches. So I have a landing page designed specifically to promote what my business can do, and funnel the user in to requesting a quote from us. The main keyword phrase I am using is "website design london", and I will be creating a few more such as "website design birmingham", "website design leeds". The only thing that I've changed at the moment across all these pages is the location name, I haven't touched any of the USP's or the testimonial that I use. However, in both cases "website design XXX" doesn't show up in any of the USP's or testimonial. So my question is that when I have these pages built, and they're indexed, will I be penalised for this tactic?

How to approach SEO for a national umbrella site that has multiple chapters in different locations that are different URLS
We are currently working with a client who has one national site - let's call it CompanyName.net, and multiple, independent chapter sites listed under different URLs that are structured, for example, as CompanyNamechicago.org, and sometimes specific to neighborhoods, as in CompanyNamechicago.org/lakeview.org. The national site is .net, while all others are .orgs. These are not subdomains or subfolders, as far as we can tell. You can use a search function on the .net site to find a location near you and click to that specific local site. They are looking for help optimizing and increasing traffic to certain landing pages on the .net site...but similar landing pages also exist on a local level, which appear to be competing with the national site. (Example: there is a landing page on the national .net umbrella site for a "dog safety" campaign they are doing, but also that campaign has led to a landing page created independently on the local CompanyNameChicago.org website, which seems to get higher ranking due to a user looking for this info while located in Chicago. We are wondering if our hands are tied here since they appear to be competing for traffic with all their localized sites, or if there are best practices to handle a situation like this. Thanks!

Location Pages and Duplicate Content and Doorway Pages, Oh My!
Google has this page on location pages. It's very useful but it doesn't say anything about handling the duplicate content a location page might have. Seeing as the loctions may have very similar services. Lets say they have example.com/location/boston, example.com/location/chicago, or maybe boston.example.com or chicago.example.com etc. They are landing pages for each location, housing that locations contact information as well as serving as a landing page for that location. Showing the same services/products as every other location. This information may also live on the main domains homepage or services page as well. My initial reaction agrees with this article: http://moz.com/blog/local-landing-pages-guide - but I'm really asking what does Google expect? Does this location pages guide from Google tell us we don't really have to make sure each of those location pages are unique? Sometimes creating "unique" location pages feels like you're creating **doorway pages - **"Multiple pages on your site with similar content designed to rank for specific queries like city or state names". In a nutshell, Google's Guidelines seem to have a conflict on this topic: Location Pages: "Have each location's or branch's information accessible on separate webpages"

Duplicate Content: "If you have many pages that are similar, consider expanding each page or consolidating the pages into one." Now you could avoid making it a doorway page or a duplicate content page if you just put the location information on a page. Each page would then have a unique address, phone number, email, contact name, etc. But then the page would technically be in violation of this page: Thin Pages: "One of the most important steps in improving your site's ranking in Google search results is to ensure that it contains plenty of rich information that includes relevant keywords, used appropriately, that indicate the subject matter of your content." ...starting to feel like I'm in a Google Guidelines Paradox! Do you think this guide from Google means that duplicate content on these pages is acceptable as long as you use that markup? Or do you have another opinion?0 -
Ecommerce Site with Unique Location Pages - Issue with unique content and thin content?
Hello All, I have an Ecommerce Site specializing in Hire and we have individual location pages on each of our categories for each of our depots. All these pages show the NAP of the specific branch Given the size of our website (10K approx pages) , it's physically impossible for us to write unique content for each location against each category so what we are doing is writing unique content for our top 10 locations in a category for example , and the remaining 20 odd locations against the same category has the same content but it will bring in the location name and the individual NAP of that branch so in effect I think this thin content. My question is , I am quite sure I we are getting some form of algorithmic penalty with regards the thin/duplicate content. Using the example above , should we 301 redirect the 20 odd locations with the thin content , or should be say only 301 redirect 10 of them , so we in effect end up with a more 50/50 split on a category with regards to unique content on pages verses thin content for the same category. Alternatively, should we can 301 all the thin content pages so we only have 10 locations against the category and therefore 100% unique content. I am trying to work out which would help most with regards to local rankings for my location pages. Also , does anyone know if a thin/duplicate content penalty is site wide or can it just affect specific parts of a website. Any advice greatly appreciated thanks Pete

What is the Best Keyword Placement within a URL for Inner Location Pages?
I'm working on a website with 100s of locations. There is a location search page (Find Widget Dealer), a page for each state (Tennessee Widget Dealers) and finally a page for each individual location which has localized unique content and contact info (Nashville Widget Dealer). My question is is related to how I should structure my URL and the keywords within the URL. Keywords in my examples being the location and the product (i.e. widget). Here is a quick overview of each of the 3 tiered pages, with the Nashville page being the most optimized: Find Widget Dealer - Dealer Page only includes a location search bar and bullet list links to states Tennessee Widget Dealers - Page includes brief unique content for the the state and basic listing info for each location along with links to the local page) Nashville Widget Dealer - Page includes a good amount of unique content for this specific location (Most optimized page) That said, here are the 3 URL structure options I am considering: http://website.com/widget-dealers/tennesee/nashville http://website.com/dealers/tennesee-widget-dealers/nashville http://website.com/dealers/tennesee/nashville-widget-dealer Any help is appreciated! Keyword Cannibalization? My home page is ranking higher for a keyword that another page is targeting
Hello! My website's http://lessonsgowhere.com.sg/ and we're a marketplace for local lessons. I've been working on the site's SEO for maybe 3 to 4 months now, and am seeing some good results. The one thing that really bugs me right now is that my homepage is ranking for a keyword that I'm trying to target with another page. Specifically, I'm targeting the group of keywords for 'cooking class', 'cooking lessons', 'cooking class singapore' with the category page: http://lessonsgowhere.com.sg/cooking-classes However, my home page is currently ranking on the first page for local search (Google Singapore), and my category page isn't! On the other hand, the page that I'm targeting for 'baking class', 'baking lessons', and 'baking class singapore' is doing fine and is already in the top 3 positions for the entire group of keywords. Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do?
