Google Authorship: Having others write content and authorship link to/from G+ profiles Impact Ranking?
-
Hi all! I am considering having several others write content for a new website and authorship link each to/from G+ profiles. Any idea of how that will Impact page/website ranking? I would think it would give more credibility to each page, and the website as a whole. No?

I agree with Samuel.
I also saw a video in which Matt Cutts was saying that they were removing authorship benefits (photo in the SERPs, showing to people in your circles}, for lots of low-quality authors.
So, just slapping authorship onto a page isn't going to be a magic bullet.

Based on Google's own statements and SEOs' research, here's what we can say:
1. A page will not rank more highly just because it incorporates Google+ authorship.
2. However, a search result may have a higher click-through rate because of the photo and associated Google+ authorship within the result. (Results with markup tend to have higher CTRs than those with only text.)
3. Google+ authorship can improve branding (and thereby CTR) -- but only if the individual author is a brand himself or herself. An SEO article with, say, Rand Fishkin's authorship helps a lot more than authorship from some "Bob Smith" that no ones knows and who has a very small Google+ following.
4. The more that a site is active on Google+ in general, the more that the site will tend to appear in personalized search results of people who have followed or "+1"ed that site on Google+.
Now, here's where it gets tricky. A top Google executive said at SMX West (I was there) that Google is looking into what doing could be termed an "AuthorRank" in the future. The theory: If Google deems an author to be a credible authority on a given topic, then that person's content will be more likely to rank for searches on that topic. However, this is all hypothetical at this point. It may or may not happen.
The brief exchange:
DS: On authorship, there is no author rank, but could that become a signal?
AS: Possibly it could.
I hope this helps! My recommendation: Build the brands of both your company and individual staffers/contributors on Google+. I personally think this will be the best action for the long term.

Change Google's version of Canonical link
Hi My website has millions of URLs and some of the URLs have duplicate versions. We did not set canonical all these years. Now we wanted to implement it and fix all the technical SEO issues. I wanted to consolidate and redirect all the variations of a URL to the highest pageview version and use that as the canonical because all of these variations have the same content. While doing this, I found in Google search console that Google has already selected another variation of URL as canonical and not the highest pageview version. My questions: I have millions of URLs for which I have to do 301 and set canonical. How can I find all the canonical URLs that Google has autoselected? Search Console has a daily quota of 100 or something. Is it possible to override Google's version of Canonical? Meaning, if I set a variation as Canonical and it is different than what Google has already selected, will it change overtime in Search Console? Should I just do a 301 to highest pageview variation of the URL and not set canonicals at all? This way the canonical that Google auto selected might get redirected to the highest pageview variation of the URL. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Would a sitewide link to a 1mb exe download harm rankings?
We're in a games market and we have a link on every page to our download. The link is an aspx but there is no downloadpage as such - clicking on the link triggers an executable download that is just less than one meg. We've been looking at the top results in our very competitive market and the top 8 don't seem to have a download. Coincidence or a real factor?

Ranking Google News - 3 digits in URL?
Do we need to have unique 3 digits in URL, like stated here in technical guidelines from Google -- https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/40787?hl=en&ref_topic=4359866. Or, is having and submitting Google News XML Sitemap a way around that -- https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/68323?hl=en

Will changing Google Places address hurt rankings?
I have a client transferring ownership of their service business (photo booth rental). The current listed address will change, so my main concern is preserving the rankings during the transition. Should I change the Google Local listing to a new physical address, or change it to "serve a surrounding area"? It seems best to set as "serving a surrounding area", but I know Google is really weird about making local listing changes. I've seen and heard about countless listings falling completely off the map after being updated. Any advice appreciated.

Looking for suggestions on email outreach title/content
Hello, We created a "How to choose a product" PDF that we are marketing to resource pages and blogs in four appropriate niches. It's good, unique content that's useful. The PDF has it's own non-commercial page. We will be doing email outreach with buzzstream. Is it important to never ask for a link in the first email? We're offering one of the following four in exchange for the link (they get to choose one): 1. A link back on one of our other sites in the same niche (not reciprocal link) 2. $100 in adwords traffic including up to 20 keywords. 3. Facebook share of their URL 4. Tweet of their URL Let me stop there and see what your feedback is. We're looking for (about) how many emails to send out building relationships before making the above offer. Or is there some way to make the offer immediately? Also, what makes a good subject line? Rand seems to indicate that you can make the offer right away in this whiteboard friday but every other article and video I've watched have said to build a relationship first. Any help is appreciated. We'll be writing all completely custom, researched outreach emails, carefully crafted.

Fading Text Links Look Like Spammy Hidden Links to a g-bot?
Ah, Hello Mozzers, it's been a while since I was here. Wanted to run something by you... I'm looking to incorporate some fading text using Javascript onto a site homepage using the method described here; http://blog.thomascsherman.com/2009/08/text-slideshow-or-any-content-with-fades/ so, my question is; does anyone think that Google might see this text as a possible dark hat SEO anchor text manipulation (similar to hidden links)? The text will contain various links (4 or 5) that will cycle through one another, fading in and out, but to a bot the text may appear initially invisible, like so; style="display: none;"><a href="">Link Here</a> All links will be internal. My gut instinct is that I'm just being stupid here, but I wanted to stay on the side of caution with this one! Thanks for your time 🙂 http://blog.thomascsherman.com/2009/08/text-slideshow-or-any-content-with-fades
