Whats better? A modified .COM EMD or Pure EMD on a new extension?
-
HI
I am planing to built a site. Lets say my keyword is "playgames". I can take for example the domain playgamesnow.com, filler domain. Or I can take playgames.new extension. A pure EMD.
My question is whats better? Is it worth to register the domain on a new ( but suitable ) extension just to be shorter and EMD.
Or its better to take the modified.COM ( longer and not EMD ). But its a .com
It will be a big site, I plan to make an authority, long lasting site.
Thanks in advance!

Okay let's say I named my company video games and then of course I want my company's name to be my Site name so Site videogames.com
My ability to make a real brand out of that generic name would be almost impossible.
Where if I came up with a unique name and it really caught on the opposite would happen for instance Kleenex is sometimes used in the place of tissues and Band-Aid is used to replace bandage.
I'm not telling you not to put a keyword in your branding I'm telling you to make your brand-name unique. Band-Aid is a perfect example of another great name that incorporates some of the actual word for the product is creating along with something unique.
If you're going to make this night very authoritative and it's actually going to do something amazing you should come up with the best name that you like you should not be worried at all about the way search engines perceived your name.
Obviously don't go name it something like "Viaggra"I added the extra G make it different but it's going to be perceived as pretty bad by Google.
Many businesses are turned into shorter names because they are so long BMW is Bavarian Motor Works
My own part of the company name Northen Elastomeric Industries
We shorten the doing business name as NEI however I'm not particularly a fan of acronyms but if you look at a company like Mercedes-Benz
You have people using one person's family name and the other's daughters nameThis is so great brands are started for reasons that the actual founders and a normal percentage of the people purchasing the product would like.
Spitball throughout a bunch of different names that you would like to make your company name
My company is Blueprint Marketing
I like the name a lot and was lucky to get the domain. However know that I did put marketing in the name I was contemplating need a blueprint however that name was already registered trademark to somebody else.Combine something that you like that represents your brand with a name that tells people what you do
Or better yet if you're going to be an authority just come up with a name that you like.
My opinion is that exact match domains will be penalized severely in the near future so if you're going to make something that's built to last why would you gamble it on something like you'll small percentage higher traffic now

Thank u all very much for ur replyes.
So ur saying that if I plan to make a massive site and authority, its better to take a .com
and it would be better to consider taking a name that can be branded , rather then take a EMD domainI see why it would be better.
But how much will I lose, in term of ranking, if I dont use an EMD?
Thanks

If you want my opinion it is best to use a .com in the case of you not having any other options but a really poor domain like
play–games–now.com
vsplaygames.new
I agree 100% with Eric you will lose a ton of business to to
playgames.com search engines do not care about the TLD in less they are geo-TLDs that are not set up properly. But people do and the end-user experience is what matters.Rather or not somebody is aware of the new TLD's I think the vast majority of people even those under the age of 25 do not know much about the new TLD's nor will they soon be adapting to them.
How many mobile devices have you ever seen that have anything other than .com built in
The most important thing with this is if you are going to turn into a real authoritative site that you do not try to just use an exact match domain.
You need to brand the site appropriately.
I will not lie and say that using keywords in your domain is not going to boost your ranking. Regardless it very spammy to use an exact match domain and very hard for people to remember that as a brand a good example of incorporating something into your brand name but making it unique is Toys "R" Us they are telling you what they do at the same time as using a keyword.
I hope that answers your questions.
All the best,
Thomas -
Is the .tld (.new) extension your thinking of using helpful / related to your theme?
I would strongly favor the .com unless there is some real value to the extension your considering.
It also depends on your demographic. If your targeting people < 25, they will be more used to non-standard domain names, and won't notice as much. If you targeting > 25 group (or a group that includes both < 25 and > 25) then the .com (or one of the other 'traditional' tlds) becomes more important.
I understand your trying to maintain privacy, but it's hard to give an honest opinion with your example domains...
BabyHazelGamesPlay.com is unnatural phrasing, and would not be memorable. I would not use this.
PlayBabyHazelGames.com is natural phrasing, and will be more easily remembered.
BabyHazelGames.new (replace 'new' with something related to your subject matter) would be better than BabyHazelGamesPlay.com, but worse than PlayBabyHazelGames.com.
If you like, feel free to message me with more exact examples and I'll try to help you out.

thank you very much for ur in detail response.
But what is "to long"?
2 examples:
2.BabyHazelGames.New
whats best?Thank you

The domain extension does not (link) matter for seo.
That leaves your branding, domain memorability, and possibly keywords as the only important factors.
Personally, I think memorability is the most important. If you try and brand PlayGames.new, no matter how well you do it, you are going to have people who intend to go to your site, and end up going to PlayGames.com just because they forgot the extension.
That being said, depending on what domain names are available in your field, there comes a point where you might want to trade simplicity for memorability. For example: www.PlayGames.new would be better than www.PlayGamesOnThisTooLongDomainName.com
Using your example... PlayGamesNow.com would be very much better than PlayGames.new.

New domain wipes out domain authority
A client wanted to change their domain name, which we have now done. The site content itself is exactly the same. We put 301 redirect links in so that Google searchers would redirect from the old site to the new one. However Moz then said that it couldn't crawl the old domain because of the redirects and advised creating a brand new campaign for the new domain. We have done this but now Moz says that the domain authority of the new site is 2 (it was 14 on the old domain). Specifics are:

old domain: https://ryemeadcleaning.co.uk
new domain: https://ryemeadgroup.co.uk So basically it seems like we're starting again from scratch with the new domain and all the SEO from the old domain has been lost? Have we done it wrong?0 -
Cost/Benefit of modifying a URL
Just as the title says, I'm looking for the cost/benefit breakdown of modifying a URL for SEO purposes. What are some examples of issues where the benefit outweighs the cost, and vise-versa? Thanks all! Frank

Duplicate Content in Wordpress.com
Hi Mozers! I have a client with a blog on wordpress.com. http://newsfromtshirts.wordpress.com/ It just had a ranking drop because of a new Panda Update, and I know it's a Dupe Content problem. There are 3900 duplicate pages, basically because there is no use of noindex or canonical tag, so archives, categories pages are totally indexed by Google. If I could install my usual SEO plugin, that would be a piece of cake, but since Wordpress.com is a closed environment I can't. How can I put a noindex into all category, archive and author peges in wordpress.com? I think this could be done by writing a nice robot.txt, but I am not sure about the syntax I shoud use to achieve that. Thank you very much, DoMiSol Rossini

Wordpress New Category URL's
Were just about to redesign our site and put all the blogs over to the new site. Previously most blogs have been added to the uncategorised section of the blog and I'm now weighing up the benefit of sifting through all the blogs and changing them to relevant categories. From an SEO perspective would it be better to Leave them in their current category but start afresh with all new blogs by adding them to relevant categories? Work out which blogs should go in which new category and 301 all previous URL's to the new one. Obviously number one will take a lot more time than number two.

301 Redirect question www to root.com
I have a site that has been up for a few weeks now and is currently in a www format and i am considering changing it to just mydomain.com I also have quite a few directory listings (including google places/bing) for this site w/ the www. url. If i do this, change it in my google analytics, and update my wordpress internal page + htaccess file. Will i lose any of the link juice i had from my www pages? Would this be something that would be advised since i've registered for many sites, or is there a potential that this could end up hurting me? Thanks,

Which is better? Remove folder or fix the links and wait?
Dear Mozers, Recently I added a new language to one of my sites in a new folder (www.site.com/es/) but for some reasons many links got broken or were simply sending to a wrong page. This caused a bad indexing and it also showed a lot of duplicate content. I know how to fix it but my question is this: Is it better to remove the second language folder, fix it and then put it back up after a few months or just fix it now as it is and wait for G to come back and index the new links?

Is "last modified" time in XML Sitemaps important?
My Tech lead is concerned that his use of a script to generate XML sitemaps for some client sites may be causing negative issues for those sites. His concern centers around the fact that the script generates a sitemap which indicates that every URL page in the site was last modified at the exact same date and time. I have never heard anything to indicate that this might be a problem, but I do know that the sitemaps I generate for other client sites can choose server response or not. What is the best way to generate the sitemap? Last mod from actual time modified, or all set at one date and time?
