Wordpress: Pages vs Posts vs Portfolio

Hi All,
I'm looking to put pen to paper and design my main structual template for my website. I will be creating the new site in Wordpress.
My understanding of Wordpress is broken into the Static Pages, Posts and Portfolio.
Static PAGE
Static one off content.
No tags, categories or archivedPosts
content entries, which is listed in reverse chronological order.
Update post entry to maintain overall freshness of your website.
tags, categories & archivedPortfolio
?????Question
- What are the benefits of a portfolio page over Static Pages & Posts
- When creating feature rich articles should i use static pages, posts or portfolio.

Hi Dean,
As previously mentioned my knowledge of 'Portfolio' was limited. Now that you have advised the nature of a 'Portfolio' being static in design, I can simply write articles to my hearts content and publish them. Additionally, I will have the added advantage to set categories and tags and visual appearance.
I believe this is game, set and Match!

A portfolio is not necessarily time-specific therefore it is not a post type such as a blog. A portfolio is just that, a portfolio of your work that you have completed (ie static) so why would you need to keep updating it. If you need to update/new articles then you would use the post type (blog).

I have taken the example provided on the filterable portfolio from here. I believe your example and mine are talking about the same thing, hence using the same Portfolio Custom Post Type.
Would I have to keep the article written on the portfolio page updated more often then a regular static page for Google ranking?

In your case I would recommend not going down the post/blog route and use a custom taxonomy (ie portfolio) as using a post to publish your portfolio will also be available as rss and is also considered as time-specific.

Thank you for the information.
My initial goal is to create a rich visual menu for users to filter in readiness to read an article of interest.
That said and done, i believe you cannot create categories and tags on static pages, hence a custom posts would need to be created with the article.I want the user to have visual and filter experience and cannot see another way of achieving this without using isotope.

I see what you are looking to do Mark but with most templates, when you create a post, it will allow you to set an image and excerpt which is then tagged into the main part of the site. It would be a bit of an odd way to do things if you were to use the portfolio option to link through to a blog post.
I don't really do much in the way of blogging, mainly due to lack of time, but go to my website and click on the Blog link to see an example of the posts populating this section. Is this what you are looking to achieve?

Thank you for your words of wisdom.
My reason for creating a portfolio was to get the best of both worlds (Pages + Posts). I'm looking to create an image based menu where users can see a graphical representation of an article. 'Eye Candy' and not heavy on text. This way the user is drawn into clicking an image to read the feature rich article.
Addiitonally, using categories and tags the user can fine tune what he or she is looking for. Here is a example of what I'm looking to create.
Your thoughts and comments would be much appreciated.

On each Wordpress site I have worked on, the Portfolio tends to be image-based and is used to showcase work or products. Unless you have a need to do this, the portfolio tends not to get used that much. That said, I am sure there are lots of people who do use it - I haven't or really seen many sites use it.
To answer your questions:

See above. Pages are your main structural pages.- When creating feature rich articles should i use static pages, posts or portfolio.
Articles should be sat in the blog section, which is populated through 'posts'.I hope this helps.

Posts are the default content type that is used for blog posts etc. They are dynamic content, with the first blog post displayed changing as a new one is added.
Pages are the default WordPress content type that is used for static content. Unlike posts these are not time-specific.
Portfolio or for that matter what ever you wish to name it are custom post types and taxonomy and can act as either, a good article to read here: Introducing Custom Posts and Taxonomies

Hi All I've picked up a new website project and wanted to ask about the best way to proceed with the current site during the development process. The current site is incomplete although it has been live for a while and has over 80 pages in the sitemap. From an SEO perspective, am I better to keep the current site live until the new site is ready? Location of body text on page - at top or bottom - does it matter for SEO?
Hi - I'm just looking at the text on a redesigned homepage. They have moved all the text to the very bottom of the page (which is quite common with lots of designers, I notice - I usually battle to move the important text back up to the top). I have always ensured the important text comes at the top, to some extent - does it matter where on the page the text comes, for SEO? Are there any studies you can point me to? Organization name as text vs. as a picture with alt text + Schema.org markup
I'm looking for some feedback to implement best practice for the markup of our header/navigation at the top of our site. Our organization name and a tag line is at the top of every page on the left, then our logo, then our navigation to items like "Topics" "FAQs" "About us" etc is to the right along the top. Our organization name includes the most frequently searched keyword for what we want to rank on, and our organization name is our domain name. A couple other background items: we're a non-profit startup and no code is public yet -- hence, I'll be explaining what we're going for. We're coding in straight html/css, not using Wordpress or anything like that. When we originally DIY coded our draft homepage and a few landing pages, we put the organization name and tag line into the markup as text, to look like this: Organization name | Pretty | Navigation items over here

--------------------------------------- | Logo | --------------------------------------------------------- Then we outsourced the markup of two more landing pages to a company that does on-demand orders for responsive markup, based on png's we sent of the designs. The company's code renders a fabulous looking version of our design, and important for usability, it is responsive. The company also did something else I'm not so sure of. They made one big image out of our organization name, tag line and logo ... because? The indenting and different font sizes of the Organization name and tag line was too hard to code in? Or is it just best practice for html standards, SEO, etc. to make it one big logo?? Now, as part of an overall effort I'm working on to reconcile our different code ... I'm mulling right now specifically on reconciling the different approaches we each took and incorporating new best practices for the header ... based on what I'm reading online about headers, including debates about whether to use h1 for your company name, whether using an image for the name is fine, advice about including Schema.org markup for logos, etc. Given all this, which of these two options look better to you? Do they seem equally good to you? What would you change about the one that looks better to you? What do I have wrong in them? Or would you code this entirely differently to hit all best practices? What do you think about using h1 for organization name vs. is there a better tag to use for the organization name to code it in as text? (Note: we have other h1's on our pages for the actual article/content titles of each page, which maybe we should, maybe we shouldn't be having those as h1's?) Joomla Core Pages Delisted
Hey Everyone, This query may be more for a Joomla developer or someone that has had a similar issue. I'm not really looking for answers like, "check Google Search Console" or anything like that. We have a client who recently had all of their core pages delisted in Google but the blog is still being displayed in search results. For example, if you search "company name" they have a blog post that ranks #13 or so organically. I tested Google Search Console and Google is saying that the site is temporarily unavailable. We haven't made any changes or updates to Joomla's core structure so I'm unsure as to where this change is coming from. Here are some items we've checked: 1. Site searches within Google, resulted in seeing core pages are not indexed but blog pages are 2. Google Search Console - looked for manual actions (none found), looked at sitemap errors (nothing mentioned), looked at robots.txt (no issues here), attempted to fetch the site as Google (temporarily unavailable). 3. Called the hosting company (Rackspace) to discuss potential issues. They were extremely helpful but we were unable to find anything. The blog is actually a Module that was added so I'm thinking something has changed to block Google bots from the core Joomla structure but it hasn't blocked them from the blog structure. Without putting the company name or url on blast, has anyone heard of or experienced anything like this? Any help or insights would be much appreciated!

Responsive design to serve different page for IE8 - SEO Implications?
A client is planning on developing a responsive designed website which redirects visitors using IE8 to a static webpage that encourages users to visit in another browser. What are the SEO implications of a server redirect just for IE8 visitors? Possible solutions: would containing a link on the static page to "continue browsing" and give the visitor access to the entire site in IE8 work well? Or should a CSS overlay message appear to IE8 visitors, no redirect, that encourages them to visit in another browser? Or serving a separate stylesheet for IE8 visitors, and not giving a responsive experience be optimal? Any suggestions or thoughts are appreciated. Cheers, Alex

WordPress not man enough...has anybody got experience working with Pryo CMS?
Hey folks I'm working with a small team on putting together a new niche accommodation / holiday search portal here in the UK. We are most likely using PHP / MySQL technology for the site - I am a huge fan of WordPress but not sure its quite man enough for the task (many option search over 10,000 plus properties). We can't afford to pay for a bespoke development, so off-the shelf CMS is the most likely route for release 1, and from what I've been reading Pyro CMS seems a good open source choice... https://www.pyrocms.com/ Has anybody come across this, or know how good it is with regards to on-site SEO? Or maybe WordPress is up to the task? If not, what are other good open source options for sites focused around a search function? Cheers Simon

How serious is duplicate page content?
We just launched our site on a new platform - Magento Enterprise. We have a wholesale catalog and and retail catalog. We have up to 3 domains pointing to each product. Coding a WordPress shopping cart
I have searched high and low for a light, simple to use Wordpress shopping cart plugin which can use custom templates and work with the transporter and payment gateway i'd like. Unfortunately i haven't found anything. I am currently looking for an example, maybe a tutorial somewhere but can't seem to find anything online, all i can find are advertisements for existing plugins. Can anyone help my any further? I know it's not an SEO related question but i'm out of ideas.
