Does nofollow link has any effect on link building

I recently read some article on noflollow link and the author says that nofollow link does have some effect on page rank.
Can anyone explain the effect of nofollow link on website ranking?

In additional to having a natural link profile, nofollow links have other benefits ,aside from thinking SEO, such as driving traffic and getting more brand visibility for your website. If you're getting more traffic from visitors who wants to learn more about your site, even if it's a nofollow link, it's definitely beneficial to your business.
In SEO regards, by getting more traffic and these visitors spending more time on your site might give Search Engine a signal that your site is relevant and brings value to your visitors.

I agree with Pixel by Pixel as well, Nofollow links don't have as much impact on rankings as "follow" links do, however they help show a natural link profile, being that not all sites that link to your content will be followed. Check out this awesome slideshare that Rand released last month at Mozcon 2014.
It has some really great experiments. If you fast forward to slide 73, it covers his experiment on "Do Nofollowed Links Have Any Direct Impact on Rankings".

Hello,
In theory Nofollow links have no impact on search rankings this is what Google tells us etc. but no follow links do make a link profile look more natural (100% follow links look bad) and there has been some observations (though no proof) that they can assist you. Although they don't transfer link juice they do transfer visitors which again can help.
So when you see an opportunity don't be put off by the no follow link, if it will benefit users go for it as its the users you are trying to help.

Link Building
I'm having difficulty creating a solid link base. I would prefer to only have links that are on relevant sites that are likely to drive traffic rather then just adding my company page to site directories. I've checked out the whiteboard Friday edition of link building and have also used the new Moz analytics that helps recommend sites to link to, but all the recommendations were directories. Is it time to pay for link building?
I've been using the Moz tools for a while now and love them. Our SEO efforts are certainly paying off as we're ranking well for a lot of our desired keywords. That being said, I'm finding link building to be a very frustrating process. As much as I like to be hands on and try to do everything, I'm wondering when it's time to "throw in the towel" and hire someone? Is there anyone else who might have gone through a similar evolution? I'd love to hear some other stories about how or why you decided to hire out your link building. I'd like to think that whatever we spend on link building could likely reduce our reliance on AdWords, although I'm not sure how this would really play out over time.

Using Online Communities for link building..
Hello. All I have a question in regards to online communities. Is joining an online community( i.e. Industry related forums, commenting on industry related news sites, responding to blog post) a good way to do link building? I don't mean in the sense of spamming but actually being an active part of a online community and adding valuable to the conversation.
