Shall I 301 a Url that has a discontinued product or shall we remove from Googles index

My web site sells shoes. These items go out of fashion and are replaced. Shall I 301 a Url that has a discontinued product or shall we remove from Googles index using webmaster tools.
I seem to have a massive 301 list that carries on growing and Im concerned that to carry on doing 301s is not the right way.

Hi BruceA
Thanks for the comment, yes I 301 with all the you mention in mind, I was just worried that one could actually create to many 301s and therefor be penalized in some way.

Cross Selling products, have you thought or tried to add links to similar replacement products from the original product?
This style is now discontinued, here are some alternatives.... If the customer took the trouble to find and click onto your site, try and keep them on it and not to bounce straight back out.

I see where both eyepaq and Highland are coming from. I personally hate landing on products that are no longer available and would prefer to land on a category giving me options,so that's why I have been implementing 301s. It just dawned on me that perhaps I may have missed a change in the goal posts from our trusted Google and redirecting may flag my site up. I did recently get a message in G webmaster tools about my redirects should be more relevant because of mobile use as a bad re direct would confuse the mobile shopper. I checked out the ones in question and i was happy that they were ok but it did make me think about the mobile shopper and weather actually it would be better to take the URL from the index altogether. Mobiles do seem to be used to surf my site more and more.
Cheers Guys

Hi,
It make sense to 301 redirect the old products to keep current Page Rank - PR won't be lost and it will be transferred to another similar page (assuming you will link to a similar page). if you remove the page - you will lose any PR that that particular page is holding. So I would definitely implement the 301 redirects and won’t cut down those pages that might have some incoming links, someone might have those in bookmarks and so on.
There is no limit as far as the overall number of 301 redirects per site. You can have millions if you want to. There is only a limit to the 301 chains.
Here is a video about this from long ago - but still very valid today - from Mat Cutts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA
Hope it helps.
Cheers !

Never underestimate the power of legacy content. Yes, those shoes are no longer for sale but what if someone wants to consign a pair and needs details? Google might favor your site and send traffic your way. Mark it out of stock, add some products they might enjoy instead and move on. I've noticed that Amazon, Newegg, etc. don't delete their old URLs. Stuff I bought years ago is still out there.

Whats (Other) traffic in Google Analytics?
When I look through all our clients, a few are receiving the majority of their traffic from (other). [ Acquisition > Channels > (Other) ]. The only option in (other) is "website" or "offline", whatever that may be. And even weirder, the avg session duration is 0:00. Any idea what this may be?

Sudden Drop in Index Status on GSC
Hi all, We've seen a sudden drop in index status on GSC from 19,000 to 12,000. Rankings, referring domains, organic traffic etc. have not changed. However, we have implemented a huge number of redirects and done a site migration from http to https in the past year. Could this have an effect? Thanks!

Identifying Bots in Google Analytics
Hi there, While you can now filter out bots and spiders in Google Analytics, I'm interested in how you identify a bots and spiders in the first place. For example, it used to be thought that Googlebot wouldn't appear in GA as it 'couldn't process Javascript' but now Google has announced new developments for its crawler with regards to interpreting javascript and CSS, this argument isn't as cut and dry. I'm not suggesting Googlebot appears in Google Analytics, but I am saying that you can't make the case that it won't appear only because it can't interpret JavaScript. So, I'm interested to see what metrics you use to identify a bot? For me, the mix of Users > Browser, Users > Operating System Version is still quite handy, but is it possible to identify individual bots and spiders within Google Analytics? And would Googlebot appear?

Google analytics and software applications
Hei Guys. I think i know the answer for this one but i thought i ask you in order to be 100% sure. Ok let's go.. So i set up url based goals in Google analytics. My website (what are running on WordPress) has google analytics enabled but just before customers makes desired action i have to send them to the application page. Trick is that the application page is not running on wordpress and doesn't have google analytic tracking. After customer fills the application form i send him to my /thank-you page on my wordpress site. My question is: Does the conversion still count because customer left my website for a minute in order to fill in the application form? Best Regards, Tauri

X2 Google Analytics affect page rank ?
Hi there, If you had 2 Google Analytics Accounts one to the main site and another to the blog, could this affect the page position in Google? We've suddenly noticed a drop in our KWs and it was shortly after we added another Google Analytics Account. The blog has 68% Bounce rate and the main site has always been about 48%. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks Paul

How to create an advanced segmentation for Google+?
Hey Mozzers, I have a question regarding Google Analytics. The problem: I have created advanced segments for Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. They all work fine... Now I am trying to create something similar for Google+ (since soon we are launching a campaign for it and I want to be able to check the evolution fast and effective). My advanced segments look like: Include -> Source -> Matching RegExp -> (Facebook|Youtube|Twitter) How should the Google+ be inserted into the group? I know this question might be easy for some advanced Analytics users but I am stuck at this point. Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance! Istvan
