.discount Domain Extensions
-
There have been several new domain extensions recently. .discount .care .attorney and even .wtf (I find that humorous). What are the extensions that you feel will have value at least secondary to .com? I have been running different url valuators and noticed that the .discount extensions when preceded by a strong keyword for example: roof.discount are showing pretty high values. Also any city with .attorney after it...
What are your thoughts on these domain extensions?
-
The jury's really still out on these, all around. As Lesley said, it depends on if and when people adopt them (on the user side), and Google often plays new domain extensions by ear. If an extension gets very spammy, they may start to see it as low-value.
My prediction is that keywords in the extension will carry some weight, but it's going to be a fairly weak signal. So "chicago-divorce.attorney" could give you a tiny boost toward ranking for "Chicago divorce attorney", but it's not going to be enough to make a difference for a competitive phrase. We're even seeing keywords in the root domain slowly losing traction as stand-alone signals. It's not enough to buy a keyword-matched domain in 2014.
If you're in a position where there's a good name available under the new extensions that fits your brand, and your options with .com's are bad, then it may be worth a shot. I certainly wouldn't dissuade someone from locking down a name under the next extensions, if the cost is reasonable. I'm just not sure I'd bet anything on the new extensions being an SEO boon.

In general marketing terms a lot of people are not familiar with the next extensions. Like if I tell people to go to Moz, they assume I mean Moz.com. But if I tell them to go to Moz.discount, I think a lot of people might end up going to mozdiscount.com. You will have to train people away from .com's and to use the new extension. Just generally ask the non tech people you know if they know of any domain that is on the new extensions. I honestly cannot think of one. The only one outside of .com, org, .net, com.uk I ever use is .io.
-
Lesley, could you elaborate with regards to the time and marketing money that would have to be used to train people? What would they have to train them on? I may be missing something here completely
-
From an SEO perspective I have no data. But from a user perspective I would stay away from them. It is going to take a lot of time and marketing money for companies to train people about the new extensions. It is not personally something I would want to pay for.

Descriptive domain vs business name domain
I originally set up my domain as "overlandparkphotographer.com" and then have my "jpshots.com" pointing to it. What I recently discovered is that even though the pages of my I set Yost SEO Title to be "JPShots Senior Pictures | Wedding Photographer" When you search "overland park photographer" the snippet tile is just "overland park photographer" which sounds super sketchy. I don't know if this is something to do with yost, or if my sneaky Domain isn't worth much, and I should simply use my regular jpshots.com domain as the primary. I know it works like a charm with yahoo, but I'm not sure how much the domain name factors google these days.

Do back-links to non indexed sub-domains / sub-directories considered by Google as website backlinks and pass Pagerank to website?
Hi, If some noindexed links on our website or sub-domain got some backlinks, will that backlinks pass Pagerank / linkjuice to website? Will they be considered as backlinks to website by Google? Here is a statement from Matt cutts for the question. My question is same as below with answer? Eric Enge: Can a NoIndex page accumulate PageRank? Matt Cutts: A NoIndex page can accumulate PageRank, because the links are still followed outwards from a NoIndex page. Thanks

Do more internal links from sub-domains to domain (website) hurt rankings?
Hi, We have nearly 10 sub-domains. Couple of our website top pages including homepage have been linked from every page of these sub-domains; from footer or top menu. Is this kind of linking is bad as per Google? What is the right way of linking between website and sub-domains?

We didn't check that time but now find duplicate pages and very confused what next. Please answer: Do search engines penalize for the change of domain name? www.example.com vs example.com? Has anyone seen this before? One domain dominates the entire first page!
Do a google search for "sober college" and tell me you don't see the entire page filled with one domain. (except the last result)

Could EMD (Exact Match Domain) have cause SERP drops?
Hi all, Another suggestion was given for our fall in SERPS. Recently Matt Cutts announced that EMDs would be hit by new algoritms. http://www.seroundtable.com/google-panda-20-15789.html Only our site with exacts matches... cours-telephone-anglais, curso-ingles-telefono, kurse-englisch-telefon, and corso-inglese-telefono were hit. Does anyone else have experience of this? Would a solution be to create new URLS and redirect? Or would a redirect carry the penalty over? Is there anyway to fix that sort of penalty? Many thanks for your help.

Redirected old domain to new, how long before seeing the external links under the new domain?
Before contracting SEO services, my client decided to change his established root domain to one more customer-friendly. Since he had no expertise on board, no redirects were set up until 6 months later. I ran stats right before the old domain was redirected and have a report showing that he had roughly 750 external links from 300 root domains. We redirected the old domain to the new domain in mid Jan 2012. Those external links are still not showing in Open Site Explorer for the new domain. I've tested it a dozen times, and the old domain definitely points to the new domain. How long should it take before the new domain picks up those external links? Should I do anything else to help the process along?

Keyword rich domains sliding fast
I decided not to worry too much about the statements from google indicating that they were going to consider key word rich domains as a negative for ranking since any of the sites I work on that have them are totally relevant to the content on the sites. However, since recent Google algorithm updates I see these domains have suddenly slid from top 3 positions to page 4 or beyond in Google SERP's. Nothing has changed on these sites in the intervening time and no change is evident in Bing or Yahoo SERP's. Is it just my imagination, or are others seeing the same thing for keyword rich domains? and has anyone yet determined the best way to deal with this problem?
