Losing Page Rank
-
Hello Moz
I launched a re-design of our site over the summer and we jumped in organic search for some keywords. Recently one of our landing pages is being hammered by Google last we we lost one position this week we lost 5 positions. Although, when I check the on-page grade Moz gives it an A is there a check sheet anyone has that I could go through to see if I have any common problems.

Thank you for the thoughts I didn't think about that in this context before. That design would push the SEO. I guess that is the curse of a template website is that it looks generic not custom tailored for the user or the brand per se

First off, I'm not sure I'd lose sleep over some shuffling around of just 5-10 positions. These are going to move around a LOT day to day and week to week. I'd worry if you completely dropped off pages below you were.
But pro-actively speaking, obviously you want to improve. The trick here is "Flour Sack Towels" is a really crowded and competitive SERP. It's not only competitive to rank there, but insanely competitive to get clicks.
Instead, I'd maybe use something like http://keywordtool.io/ and get some more specific searches off of "flour sack towels" - look for more specific searches where you know you offer one of the best solutions and focus on some more niche rankings.
Beyond that I'd zoom out and look at some more global site wide things you can do to improve. The thing that strikes me is that the site appears somewhat generic. I'd really work on upgrading your branding - you want users (especially new ones) to feel really comfortable giving you their credit card information to buy stuff.

- Fix the lack of padding in product descriptions: http://screencast.com/t/ZOUStle7paT
- Fix the spacing issues here: http://screencast.com/t/dtqiUDv3ZW
- The whole top header area I think could be improved: http://screencast.com/t/1NPxiotb56 - I'm not a designer of course, but I can tell you my very first look at the site gave me a feeling like "this site does not look professional". I think the search bar is kind of big, the login area icons etc are funny. I bet if you upgraded you header it would cast a much better impression for users - which will trickle down to SEO because of user metrics, brand memorability etc.

Hey
The on page grader will give you a good idea if the single page is well optimised but a site / business / brand is made up of much more than a single page.
It's very hard to offer advice with such a small amount of information - can you give us a bit more history? Keywords? Positioning? History? Any other SEO historically?

Local Service Pages
We've all been here before if you do local. What type of content should go on a local service page when dealing with multiple service locations? You could: Describe Services List Local News Articles List staff in that location (although I would prefer in the staff page for that city) Testimonials from that location or service But what happens when you are describing something that needs no explanation. Or a medical procedure that requires no localization and altering the wording can actually cause legal problems if misstated. Matt Cuts recommends a few sentences to a paragraph to describe a service, but my experience hasn't found this to hold up locally. Any ideas or suggestions about how this could be remedied?

Rankings going down and down. Help!
I just joined a company as an in house seo. When I looked at their rankings I noticed a downward trend. How can I reverse that? I'm currently working on their onsite optimization, but is there anything more that I can do? edit

Duplicate Page Content on Empty Manufacturer Pages
I work for an internet retailer that specializes in pet supplies and medications. I was going through the Crawl Diagnostics for our website, and I saw in the Duplicate Page Content section that some of our manufacturer pages were getting flagged. The way our site is set up is that when products are discontinued we mark them as discontinued and use 301 redirects to redirect their URLs to other relevant products, brands, or our homepage. We do the same thing with brand and manufacturer pages if all of their products are discontinued. 90% of the time, this is a manual process. However, the other 10% of the time certain products come and go automatically as part of our inventory system with one of our fulfillment partners. This can sometimes create empty manufacturer pages. I can't redirect these empty pages because there's a chance that products will be brought back in stock and the page will be populated again. What can we do so that these pages won't get marked as duplicates while they're empty? Write unique short descriptions about the companies? Would the placement of these short descriptions matter--top of the page under the category name vs bottom of the page underneath where the products would go? The links in the left sidebar, top, and in the footer our part of our site architecture, so those are always going to be the same. To contrast, here's what a manufacturer page with products looks like: Thanks! http://www.vetdepot.com/littermaid-manufacturer.html

Changing the page a term ranks for
Hi all, I hope you can help advise me of the best way to change the page that is ranking for a particular keyword/term. Is it just a case of on-page optimizing the term/keyword on the new-page and getting good links/traffic to that page and leaving the old one as it is, or is some sort of "de-optimization" of the old page a something that could help? Thanks.

Canonical home page
I have a site that shows duplicate page content for: www.autoserviceexpertsonline and www.autoserviceexpertsonline/index.html When looking at the files using the cms (intuit) file manager, I only see the /index.html version. I added the Caononical tag referencing/pointing to both the domain name only and then changed to .../index.html No matter how I code this, the seomoz On-Site SEO Grader still has a problem with it. Is this a bug with the Grading program or am I doing something wrong? Please help as I think this is causing me problems with Google and I'd like to get this right for future sites I will be working on. Thanks, Bill
