Homepage 301 and SEO Help
-
Hi All,
Does redirecting alternate versions of my homepage with a 301 only improve reporting, or are there SEO benefits as well. We recently changed over our servers and this wasn't set-up as before and I've noticed a drop in our organic search traffic. i.e. there was no 301 sending mywebsite.com traffic to www.mywebsite.com
Thanks in advance for any comments or help.

Hi Mick,
One more question if you don't mind, how would this affect my traffic results? Could this be why my direct is off so much? Or would it show in my organic traffic?
My Direct traffic used to be 3x or 4x by Organic or Paid traffic, now it's barely 1/10th. Cheers.

Thanks Mick, appreciate you taking the time to look at it. I'll get on this asap!

This is not implemented. You have both www and non www URLs along with /index.php for the homepage. This needs to be implemented in your htaccess file with something like (ensure you backup existing file):
Redirect non-www urls to www
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.4cabling.com.au
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.4cabling.com.au/$1 [R=301,L]Remove index from URL
RewriteRule ^(.*)index.(htm|html|php)$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]
Your page load is woeful and you need to address - https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=http%3A%2F%2F4cabling.com.au%2F&tab=desktop
Also, you have not got canonical tags set up for each page which I would recommend

What is the URL?

Follow Up:
So, I had our SEO guy do a 301 for both versions of our homepage, and now every single page on our site is showing as duplicate content! Is this just a reporting thing, or do they have no idea what they are doing?
-
Cheers, will get our devs on this asap.

Thanks,
Page load is good, pages are indexed, but we did get an error in Google Analytics showing that we needed to 301 our homepage, but when I showed it to them they said it wasn't a big deal!!!!
They've since done the 301, but I think I need to learn to do it myself for next time.

If you have changed servers I would double check a few things. This is stuff to rule out:
- Page load speed should be good
- All your pages are still indexed in Google
- There are no warnings in Google Webmaster Tools
- Have a look through your link profile - if the majority of links are to non www then the 301s will shave an edge off the link value from those links. You are right to do the 301, so if this the case see if you can update those links.
- Have you implemented any other internal 301s to new URLs
-
It is very important redirect all the alternate versions of your home page to be permanently redirect to the preferred version of the home page. Search Engines ideally consider unique URLs to be a separate page on the website and if two different URLs contain the same content that will be considered as duplicate content which actually can hurt your SERP rankings.
For example:
- http://www.example.com/xyz - http://www.example.com.xyz.html
these two URLs are different in the eye of Google and if it displays the same content that will be considered as duplicate content. In order to stay away from this problem you should set 301 redirects to all alternate versions of your home page.
Hope this helps!

Is Removing Breadcrumbs Detrimental for SEO?
We have full navigational breadcrumbs on our site for the menu and the brand menu. i.e. Home > Clothing > Jackets Brand > Brand Name > Brand Jackets There's been talk of removing this and having it like Chico's does, where on item pages they just have a link at the top to previous category (i.e. you're on a shirt product page and at the top it says "Back to Tops" instead of listing Home > Clothing > Tops) Is doing something like this detrimental to SEO? From what I've read Breadcrumbs are for user experience but I just want to be sure.

Is there an SEO advantage to blog content being a child of /blog/ rather than the homepage?
I'm working on a website where all the blog content is listed as separate pages from the homepage, eg: www.domain.com/first-blog-post
Technical SEO | | MillyShaw
www.domain.com/second-blog-post However, it would make my life easier if all blog content was listed under /blog/ so that I could analyse it better in Google Analytics. Eg I'd like it to be: www.domain.com/blog/first-blog-post
www.domain.com/blog/second-blog-post The developer is not keen because it would create extra work for him, and he's also said it's a bad idea from an SEO point of view. But is this the case? Presumably with 301s in place it wouldn't make a difference? Thanks for your help!0 -
To 301 redirect or not...
Hi guys i'd like to get your opinion on this. We currently have two sites, site A is the old one with PA44 and DA33. Site B is the new one which is going to replace site A it currently has PA37 and DA24 Our plan for the future is to shut down site A and redirect all pages using 301 to the relevant pages on side B. Currently we have some links in place for a couple of keywords on site A to site B which seems to be working great for our ranking. Now i'm wondering if this is maybe a good option, to give back links from A to B or will i pass through more link juice when redirecting everything? (ps. both are e commerce sites hosted and registred with different companies)

Does any one have experience with SEO and .NET using 301 redirects?
A while ago I altered some of the URL's of my website. Google now thinks that I have two duplicate pages (duplicate content), I have asked my third party web developers (Who use .NET and a custom built CMS system) to simply 301 redirect the old URL to the other. However, my web developers say the following: "Solving the problems by 301 permanent re directs are out of the question as this would create infinite loops. Likely to bring down our server." They also wont do a canonical, as they say there is only one page (but two URLs) Firstly, has any one heard of this before and do they think this is true? Also, does anyone have an alternative method of getting rid of the old URL? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

301 redirect Issues
my clients site is www.greenbayharvest.co.uk When you enter that URL it redirects to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop, dont ask why, thats the way they set it up and thats what im stuck with. So, how do i resolve the 301 issue here. we want all things to point to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk, in terms of SEO but does the fact that there is a redirect going to /shop make this an issue? we appear to have: www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop www.greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop all these URL's go to the same same page so what is the best way to correct this? thanks for any help on this Lee

SEO Developers
I have a team of inexperienced SEO developers and the argument we continually have is that its a marketing role - however most of it is technical, no view state, no js, page load time, csssprite, metatags, frequency of updates to server, duplicate content via coding methodology, lioading content prior to ads, not spidering ads (IT says impossible yet google says required) etc. I looked at your referrals for developers and couldnt find any that recognized SEO as part of their skill set - do you believe tehre aer developers that specialize in this? Thanks, Michelle

301 Redirects
Hello, I have a problem with my website. I have a page on my website http://www.ensorbuilding.com/page.php/aboutus but if i type in www.ensorbuilding.com/page.php/aboutus/f8e45e9d9df6140bb5a7ff1173e8d828 or www.ensorbuilding.com/page.php/aboutus/0f0eea5e9ab0a3e8d91fad8fc0d3ce9c it still displays the about us page. Google is seeing this as duplicate content so what I would want to do is 301 redirect anything after www.ensorbuilding.com/page.php/aboutus . How could I implement a 301 redirect in this way?
