What could go wrong? SEO on mobile site is different than desktop site.
-
We have a desktop site that has been getting worked on over the year regarding improving SEO. Since the mobile site is separate, the business decided to not spend the time to keep it updated and just turned it off. So any mobile user that finds a link to us in search engines, goes to a desktop site that is not responsive.
Now that we're hearing Google is going to start incorporating mobile user friendliness into rankings, the business wants to turn the mobile site back on while we spend months making the desktop site responsive. The mobile site basically has no SEO. The title tag is uniform across the site, etc.
How much will it hurt us to turn on that SEO horrid mobile site? Or how much will it hurt us to not turn it on?

Hi,
Were you able to get the desktop site responsive? If not you may have seen an impact from the Mobile Friendliness Update in April (21st). In terms of whether it's preferable to have a good desktop site and no mobile version, or a mobile version which is not correctly set up for SEO, I'd lean towards suggesting that you do put the mobile version live for the short-term while you are working to make the desktop site responsive. At least this way your mobile users can have a better UX, and if you correctly implement the switchboard tags Google should be able to tell what the pages are for. Of course having a good SEO implementation on the mobile site should improve your mobile rankings, but failing that my suggestion would be to check first of all how your desktop-only site currently ranks on mobile, and then test what happens if you were to turn on the mobile version (or possibly even just a few key mobile-friendly pages). Another factor would be how likely your users are to be accessing your site on mobile - if it's a small percentage, you may have nothing to worry about; if a large percentage of your user base are likely to be on their phones, having a good mobile experience is going to be vital not only for mobile traffic but also for conversion.
That said, a well-optimized mobile site is just as valid an approach as responsive. Google recommend responsive simply because this is often the simplest way to implement a mobile friendly design; however they do not penalise sites that utilize the 'separate mobile site' approach as long as the two versions are accessible to all Googlebot user agents. And you can also utilize the switchboard tags to help explain to Google that the mobile version is linked to the desktop version. Either way, I'd strongly encourage you to get either a well-optimized mobile site or a responsive site as soon as possible, as it seems likely that mobile-friendliness will become increasingly necessary .

Hello!
I'm not too sure how much turning on a mobile site with no SEO value will impact your rankings when it comes to titles and such but my assumption is that it absolutely would. However some factors that will hurt your SEO in doing this is that Google prefers one URL, responsive websites, and fast load times. Having your site redirect makes it slow and shows multiple URLs. Even though Google is more concerned with sites having a mobile version (regardless of how it's done) the downside of using a secondary mobile template is something to consider.
Personally, if this were my business website…I would wait for the responsive site to be done. Even if it takes a bit of time you are better off going about things the right way. No shortcuts in SEO!
Hope that helps

Why is this site ranked #1 in Google with such a low DA (is DA not important anymore?)
Hi Guys, Would you mind helping me with the below please? I would like to get your view on it and why Google ranks a really new domain name #1 with super low domain authority? Or is Domain Authority useless now in Google? It seems like from the last update that John Mueller said that they do not use Domain Authority so is Moz Domain Authority tool not to take seriously or am I missing something? There is a new rehab in Thailand called https://thebeachrehab.com/ (Domain authority 13)It's ranked #1 in Google.co.th for these phrases: drug rehab thailand but also for addiction rehab thailand. So when checking the backlink profile it got merely 21 backlinks from really low DA sites (and some of those are really spammy or not related). Now there are lots of sites in this industry here which have a lot higher domain authority and have been around for years. The beach rehab is maybe only like 6 months old. Here are three domains which have been around for many years and have much higher DA and also more relevant content. These are just 3 samples of many others... <cite class="iUh30">https://www.thecabinchiangmai.com (Domain Authority 52)</cite>https://www.hope-rehab-center-thailand.com/ (Domain Authority 40)https://www.dararehab.com (Domain Authority 32) These three sites got lots of high DA backlinks (DA 90++) from strong media links like time.com, theguardian.com, telegraph.co.uk etc. (especially thecabinchiangmai.com) but the other 2 got lots of solid backlinks from really high DA sites. So when looking at the content, thebeachrehab.com has less content as well. Can anyone have a look and let me know your thoughts why Google picks a brand new site, with DA 13 and little content in the top compared to competition? I do not see the logic in this? Cheers

Inbound Links Inquiry for a New Site
For a site that is only one to two months old, what is considered a natural amount of inbound links if you're site offers very valuable information, and you have done a marketing push to get the word out about your blog? Even if you are receiving backlinks from authority websites with high DA, does Google get suspicious if there are too many inbound links during the first few months of a sites existence? I know there are some sites that blow up very fast and receive thousands of backlinks very quickly, so I'm curious to know if Google puts these kind of sites on a watchlist or something of that nature. Or is this simply a good problem to have?

Why does expired domains still work for SEO?
Hi everyone I’ve been doing an experiment during more than 1 year to try to see if its possible to buy expired domains. I know its considered black hat, but like I said, I wanted to experiment, that is what SEO is about. What I did was to buy domains that just expired, immediately added content on a WP setup, filled it with relevant content to the expired domain and then started building links to other relevant sites from these domains.( Here is a pretty good post on how to do, and I did it in a similar way. http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2297718/How-to-Build-Links-Using-Expired-Domains ) This is nothing new and SEO:s has been doing it for along time. There is a lot of rumors around the SEO world that the domains becomes worthless after they expire. But after trying it out during more than 1 year and with about 50 different expired domains I can conclude that it DOES work, 100% of the time. Some of the domains are of course better than others, but I cannot see any signs of the expired domains or the sites i link to has been punished by Google. The sites im liking to ranks great ONLY with those links 🙂 So to the question: WHY does Google allow this? They should be able to see that a domain has been expired right? And if its expired, why dont they just “delete” all the links to that domain after the expiry date? Google is well aware of this problem so what is stopping them? Is there any one here that know how this works technically?

Can anyone tell me why this site ranks so well?
Site in question: cellphoneshop.net From what I can tell from their link profile, the links they garner don't appear to be particularly high value but they dominate organic listings for my vertical (cell phone accessories), esp. in the last 2-3 months when Google was supposedly increasing the quality of their search results. Can anyone tell me why in particular this site ranks so well for competitive short and long tail terms?

Contacted by an SEO company..
We have been contacted by a free SEO company, who seem to use your domain and create articles for you on your site, linking to other relevant sites, while other relevant sites link to yours. All they ask is a small link on your homepage. An excerpt of the instructions are: Download the attached files in a folder to be uploaded to your server (public_html) folder Set 777 permission to the folder. This allows our script to work on your site Add the "site wide" link on your homepage, as well as on the inner pages, the same way we do in the article section. Implement the "site wide" link following the instructions on the README.txt file Copy the script on the file or you can provide us with a temporary FTP access to your server and we will do it for you. Please note that if you can upload our folder to your site within 48 hours, you will be eligible to receive 20 bonus links for your SEO campaign. Should we tread carefully?
