What to do when you get an oh so sweet but temporary link?
-
Hello! We recently received a great link from a local university. My colleague did a few presentations at the university, so they were nice enough to turn a mention of our company name on their academics page into a link when we asked.
The problem is that we've been told that the mention/link will disappear after about a month.
So, my questions:
-
Can we do anything to further exploit that link in the short time we have? My colleague brought up doing some kind of funky link pyramid thing where we create links to that page, which would possibly give us even more link juice. I know nothing about this sort of thing. Is it recommended/not recommended?

Is there anything we could possibly do to preserve the link in Google's index and have it still count in our favor after it's taken down? Maybe some kind of crazy iframe magic trick?
Thanks!!

Been right there and here's what we did...
We got an alum of the university to put it on their own page - that they'd attended and found the Seminar a great one...and we ensured that the alum pages (we got 3 attendees to say what a great event it was) were all FOLLOW links too!
YMMV but that's what we did! And do!

Not an authoritative answer and I know you are not doing link purchasing but this case seems to be pertinent to temporary links in general:
Google webspam team included a link from a page in Google cache, as the original resource no longer existed. This raised a concern with some that even links from Google cache need to be considered when managing disavow files. Some speculated this was simply a human error, but John Mueller stepped in and clarified the matter after consulting with the team at Google.
Now, why would Google's own team include a link from Google's cache for a link that is no-longer available, why worry about it at all? One answer may be that links that get cached by Google still carry on being ranking factors. So maybe making sure that the page where the link resides gets cached by Google will help to preserve some of it's ranking power.

We are moving to HTTPS and wanted to know if our link building efforts were in vain or will the link juice pass to HTTPS?
We are switching to HTTPS and want to make sure the links we've gotten in the past will still transfer since they are pointing to HTTP? I'd hate to go back through and ask people to please add an s to the link.

What is a natural link?
Hi everyone, I'm trying to better understand what is meant by a natural link and would appreciate any assistance. Doing some competitor link analysis I've noticed a web developer who has created a directory for all its customers. This is not a directory in the traditional sense of being of use to an end user, but to my untrained eyes, it looks like an internal directory used solely for the purpose of link building. For all I know this might be perfectly good practice in the industry, but as a beginner, I'm attempting to get an understanding of things. My question is, what precisely is meant by a natural link? If the above scenario is all ok, whereby there are businesses in the same field of work, but ultimately could be in any given location, on a directory, are they natural links? Do these kind of directories that don't service an end user, exist if the common feature between them is say location only, or an seo agency only? Appreciate I could be completely out of kilter on this, but it seems the benefit on SERPs is pretty significant for something that seems pretty "unnatural" to me? Any guidance would be appreciated...tom

Wierd link
We have recently receive linek from one website. The site is quite very powerful for the word we try to rank, however the link is kind of wired. This is how it looks like: http://villasdiani.com/?db The webmaster of the site said that he ads (?db) on the end so as we would see on our analytics the traffic from his site.. Also the link is from footer...is this good or it does not have value

How long does it take to get links indexed?
How long does it take Google Webmaster tools on average to detect links to my website? What about OSE? My site is fairly new (launched in January) and I've done some guest blogging -- I would think that some links from 3-4 weeks ago would be showing up by now. Am I just being impatient?
