PDFs and SEO
-
Hello Fellow Mozers!
Just curious... can or does Google read PDFs linked on sites? I always assumed they would be "read" much like images are...that is, the bots can't "see" the image they just read the link and title tag. I am doing SEO for a site that has many PDF forms and it just occurred to me that I have no idea about the relationship between PDFs and SEO
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

If you can cut and past the text then as a rule Google can index it.

It is easier for the user mainly. Secondly, it offers better tracking for analytical purposes.
-
No. Mainly because the site isn't set up to receive payments and the company prefers to be sent checks along with the order form.
What's the benefit of also having a form on the site if the PDF is going to be there anyway?
-
Do you also have the PDF available as a form they can fill out on the site and submit without printing it or anything like that? I would create the online form with the option to download a printable version.
-
The PDFs are printable order forms so it's not just random content. No one else has the same PDFs since they are custom made by the company
-
It is better to have the content on page as opposed to in a link that has to be clicked to get to. If there are a lot of people who have the same PDF on their site, it is duplicate content and not doing any good anyway.

What do you mean by "they are not optimal for a variety of reasons"?
-
Yes, the content is indexed (specifically if the spider can read the text--ie not embedded text inside an image). However, they are not optimal for a variety of reasons. Alex Fusman had a blog post on this a few years ago where he summarized optimizing pdf's for search. Here is his checklist:
Checklist for PDF Optimization:
- Search-friendly filenames
- Keyword-optimized titles
- Informative, concise descriptions
- Company name in "Author" field
- Use several relevant keywords in "Keyword" field
- Make sure to fill out all available fields - there is an option to view "Additional Metadata" (in Adobe Acrobat)
- Add tags to and accessibility options to your document
- Don't forget about Alt tags for images
- Add links back to relevant pages on the main website
- Write-protect the document
- Offer HTML version of the document

Any Advice for Image SEO?
I have a client who is very concerned about reputation management ... Google his name and some very provocative photos show up in Google Images. There are a couple of semi-famous people who share his name, and my plan is to backlink their images that currently rank positions 50 - 100 to try and push them up. Should I backlink the page that contains the image or the image itself? Any other recommendations?

Local seo strategy for local gardening business ideas?
Hi all, I am just setting up a local organic garden maintenance business in my home town. I have set up the website, got social media accounts active (FB, Twitter and G+), set up google local listing (currently 5th in the local maps thingy), I have done loads of citations (many more than my competitors, but not a ridiculous amount), I've got 4 customer reviews on google so far, checked my DA against my competitors (mine 1, my comps 8-9), checked my comps links (less than 10) and been writing a blog on my website every couple of days. I realise the one thing I have against me is that my domain is just less than a month old. How long until google builds a bit of trust in it to see it come up in the serps? Also, I would love some ideas of what else I can be doing in the mean time. The idea here is to get the site rocking on all cylinders before the gardening season starts again in March. Do-able?

Does the canonical imply a wrost thing in terms of SEO?
Hello, I am wondering if the canonical warning should be seen as something wrong in terms of SEO and Google, and therefore the similar contentatr pages must be eliminated to only one page, or if the canonical could be mantained, Thx a lot Antonio

Video SEO: Videos in Multiple Sources
Frist time question, so excited! 🙂 We are hosting videos on Wistia for a new series we're calling Tatango University - Very similar to Whiteboard Fridays as you can tell - thanks Rand for the idea. My question, should we also be uploading the videos to YouTube or will this somehow we looked at as duplicate content or video spamming? Also, if we host them on YouTube will they always come up before our videos on our own site, therefore driving all the traffic to YouTube? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Image SEO - Does having multiple sites using same image help?
I'd assume that if many websites reference the same image on a server that this image would rank higher in image results than a similar image that is only used on 1 website.I have yet to do any testing with this to be certain, but how important does this factor seem to be in regards to image SEO?
