Self created links, are there any of vaule?
-
Hi all.
Just a quick one; Are there any self created links that are worth bothering with? Any or any real value you can mention?
Or shall we just put our time and energy into good content and outreach?
Isaac.

Thank you so much for this detailed response, and linking to those essays. What an invaluable resource.

No. Here's the basic reason why: Google doesn't want to give you "credit" for a link that you give yourself. One "earned" link that is 100% natural is better than 100 or 1,000 "built" and "artificial" links because links that others freely give you carry much more weight.
Here's the process that I recommend:
First, I'd suggest that you change your mindset so that you think less about getting links and more about genuine marketing. Second, read this Moz essay of mine on an introduction to getting coverage and attention to content. (I also have a follow-up on integrating SEO and public relations.) The best links, rankings, traffic and more are actually just good by-products of doing good public relations and publicity.
The basic idea:
First, determine your website's target audience. Second, find out what major news outlets, publications, and blogs are actually read by your target audience. Third, use the methods that I detailed to get news coverage, a quality article, and other attention from those specific websites.

Hi Isaac
Sure there are sites that add nofollow.. those can be blog comments, forums, account links and many other places. Just be sure you don't spam and use those links wisely

Thanks for that Eugenio. So there are some sites that don't add the rel=nofollow code to a self-created link? I haven’t come across any at all yet.
How would you go about searching for them? We are in the stationary business, diaries, notebooks etc.
Thank you for the reply. We really appreciate it, I’m still learning
Isaac.

Hi
I think self created links are valuable if used wisely. You should try to use those links only to build authority to your site, without trying to spam for it. This means it is better to do only a few manual links and get sure that all of those links are valuable and from authoritative sites. Hope this helps

No follow external links
Hi all, Our blog utilizes a fair amount of guest blog articles. Each article includes a link to the authors site. Some memebers of our team believe it is best practice to no follow all of these links while others believe we should follow the links, Our page rank and domain authority are almost always much higher then the guest blogger's site so we want to know the pros and cons of nofollow vs follow of these links. Since the domain authority and page rank of guest blog sites are low will this have a negative effect on our site? They aren't spammy and are legitimate sites covering similar content. Any feedback would be greaty appreciated!

Link Building - Affiliate Link Programs
I'm getting some conflicting information when researching this... I want to create the most organic link building strategy that not only gets high authority sites linking to a website, but relevant websites. I'm creating an affiliate link program where I link to partner and affiliate companies, who in turn link back to me. The question is where to put these links. I was initially thinking of putting them in the footer so they add credibility to every page, and in turn ask my affiliates to do the same thing. However; some sources say that Google no longer looks at links in the footer section. Is it true that Google doesn't count links in footer sections? And do you have any tips on creating this Affiliate Link Program?

Footer Links And Link Juice
I'm starting to learn about link juice and notice in GWMT > Traffic > Internal Links, that the list is in this order by the links counted on each page. Some are in the footer and some are in the header, with some being more important than others commercially i.e. /register /privacy /terms /search /sitemap /disclaimer /blog /register So I am wondering if I should add a 'no-follow' attribute to the footer links i.e. privacy, terms, disclaimer and leave the others as they are? Does this help retain link juice on each page where the links appear? Or am I missing the point all together? This is my website: http://goo.gl/CN0e5

Do links within imbeddable widgets carry link juice?
I'm dipping my toes into infographic design. On of my desired outcomes is to gain links by having other sites embed my graphic. I'm considering using Tableau's interactive data visualization software to do so; thus creating a widget, embedding it on my blog, and including the embed code for others to post. Is it possible to include a juice passing link in such an infographic? I know its possible to include links inside the tableau graphic but not sure if they have straight SEO value. If these links are not juice passing would it be better to go with a simple image link that passes value?

Link Building: Asking for links versus building links
I am currently delving into link building for SEO having started out from a social media marketing side. From that angle, it was always my belief building high quality links came from engaging targeted bloggers and sites in my market and related verticals for product reviews and/or providing expert advise and opinion for posts they are creating. As I am learning more the "technical" side of SEO, I've read a lot of posters on here talk about asking from links from websites. While I get the concept from a strategic stand point, are links really asking for or is better to continue to pursue the long term investment of pitching to get coverage from well known bloggers and sites?
