SEO direction - help needed
-
Hi,
I've been working on a site for about 5 years. We built the traffic up to about 8k visitors/day.
Although now it's dropped down over the past 2 years to about 2k visitors a day.
New traffic source is mainly from SEO longtail.
The whole time we have been working to improve the site.
What's the best way to get some help from experts on the right direction to get traffic back up or to at least tell me the site will never work
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Matt, Joey, Joseph and Keszi for your feedback.
I will investigate and see what I can come up with.
I will update any progress.

Hi Mark,
The guys have mentioned quite good answers above, so I am not going to elaborate on that.
I just wanted to jump in with a tool for the algorithm diagnosis: http://www.barracuda-digital.co.uk/panguin-tool/
It helped me a lot to see which update has hit one of the sites I have been working on.
I hope it will help you as much, as did with me.
Gr., Keszi

Good advice Matt,
Mark, look at your traffic over the time period i question. Then pull up Moz's list of algorithm updates ( http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change ) See if your substantial drop in traffic correlates to any of the updates to help determine if you got a specific penalty problem. This could be an eye opener to discover what could be a bigger potential problem than you initially thought or never knew about at all.
If the traffic drop was slowly over time, I would also check your keyword rankings over time. It may be as simple as more and more of your competitors are catching up on the seo work . Slowly out ranking you and getting a big share of your previous traffic.
I would definitely check the algorithms in relation to the traffic drops.
Hope that helps,
Joe

What was the quality of the traffic you used to have? Were you getting good conversion?
Matt's comments are great. I'd also add that with the info you shared (mainly the timing), your traffic was possibly from rankings propped up by bad links? I'd do a thorough link audit if you haven't already, and simultaneously start brainstorming some great user-focused content that targets those short tail keywords with volume. If you feel the need to hire an expert, the Moz Recommended list is a great place to go. http://moz.com/community/recommended
Whoa! When did that list get so big??
-
Hey Mark,
It's hard to say with the info you've provided but were you hit with one of the many Google algorithm updates that tanked your traffic at once or did it slowly just go away? What were you doing differently then? I know a lot of small businesses that were blogging like mad for a long time then stopped and shockingly, traffic dropped as their content activities stopped. When they resumed, readership didn't immediately pick back up so they got frustrated & stopped again. All that on again, off again, on again is definitely not going to help.
If you were affected with some sort of Google zoo animal, you'll probably want to get professional help getting it sorted. 6000 traffic lost is just SO much. If you need anything further, please do let me know!

Too many SEO changes needed on a page. Create a new page?
I've been doing some research on a keyword with Page Optimization. I'm finding there's a lot of changes suggested. I'm wondering that because of the amount of changes required is it better to create a new page entirely from scratch that has all the suggestions implemented OR change the current page? Thanks, Chris

SEO on dynamic website
Hi. I am hoping you can advise. I have a client in one of my training groups and their site is a golf booking engine where all pages are dynamically created based on parameters used in their website search. They want to know what is the best thing to do for SEO. They have some landing pages that Google can see but there is only a small bit of text at the top and the rest of the page is dynamically created. I have advised that they should create landing pages for each of their locations and clubs and use canonicals to handle what Google indexes. Is this the right advice or should they noindex? Thanks S

SEO for interior page
Is it possible to be penalized on an interior page but not the whole website? Here's why I ask, I have a page: www.thesandiegocriminallawyer.com/domestic-violence.html that is not ranking well (p. 21 of Google) while the rest of the site ranks well (b/w p.1 to p.3). I checked the link profile in opensiteexplorer, ahrefs, and majesticseo but can't find any problems. I have also checked the HTML code, CSS, keyword optimization, but can't find any problems there either. Can anyone give me insight into why this might be happening? Of course, I'm working under the assumption that this page SHOULD be ranked higher for "San Diego Domestic Violence Attorney" - at least higher than page 21.

Consistent Ranking Jumps Page 1 to Page 5 for months - help needed
Hi guys and gals, I have a really tricky client who I just can't seem to gain consistency with in their SERP results. The keywords are competitive but what the main issue I have is the big page jumps that happen pretty much on a weekly basis. We go up and down 40 positions and this behaviour has been going on for nearly 6 months.

I felt it would resolve itself in time but it has not. The website is a large ecommerce website. Their link profile is OK in regards to several high quality newspaper publication links, majority brand related anchor texts and the link building we have engaged in has all been very good i.e. content relevant / high quality places. See below for some potential causes I think could be the reason: The on page SEO is good however the way their ecommerce website is setup they have formed a substantial amount of duplicate title tags. So in my opinion this is a potential cause. The previous web developer set-up 301 redirects all to their home page for any 404 errors. I know best practice is to go to the most relevant pages, however could this be a potential issue? We had some server connectivity issues show up in webmasters tools but that was for 1 day about 4 months ago. Since then no issues. they have quite a few 'blocked URLs' in their robots.txt file, e.g. Disallow: /login, Disallow: /checkout/ but to me these seem normal and not a big issue. We have seen a decrease over the last 12 months in Webmasters Tools of 'total indexed web pages' from 5000 to 2000 which is quite an odd statistic. Summary So all in all I am a tad stumped. We have some duplicate content issues in title tags, perhaps not following best practice in the 301 redirects but other than that I dont see any major on page issues, unless I am missing something in the seriousness of what I have listed.
Finally we have also do a bit of a cull of poor quality links, requesting links to be removed and also submitting a 'disavow' of some really bad links. We do not have a manual penalty though. Thoughts, feedback or comments VERY welcome.0 -
Are tags an issue in SEO
SEOMoz saw that my tags were duplicate pages. Are tags a serious issue in SEO? Should I remove it entirely to prevent the duplicate pages?

The format for image SEO
Hi there. After looking at a few SEO videos relating to image SEO it seems important to ensure images are SEO'd just as well as pages. I however have a question. If the page is Meta titles the following: Online for Equine | Riding Clothing | Just Togs Latina Ladies Breech And this particular page contains five images which are each variants of this product, how is it best to SEO them? Would you go with the: Online for Equine | Riding Clothing | Just Togs Latina Ladies Breech Front Online for Equine | Riding Clothing | Just Togs Latina Ladies Breech Back Online for Equine | Riding Clothing | Just Togs Latina Ladies Breech Side and so on... Or would this result in keyword stuffing with Google's new over-optimisation rules. Would it be better to rename them so they are all individual? I am considering deleting the images, renaming them on the server as the SEO proof name and then re-uploading them so the Image caption = filename. Am I on the right track?
