Phantom Update?
-
Hi All,
I know this is a long while back but I think we started to lose our organic traffic after the Phantom update back in May 2013.
We have two websites, one offering serviced apartments in London only and one website offering serviced apartments across the world.
The apartments we feature in London are the same on both sites - although they have different product descriptions, meta data etc.
I read that the Phantom update hit websites which were owned by the same company.
Do you think we are still being penalised for this?
Any thoughts at all would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks,
Laura

Hi Matt,
Thank you for your response.
I'm not sure what duplicate content you are referring to?
We are in the process of cleaning up our link profile.

-
Duplicate content on most every page of your site. Basically nothing unique = why would Google rank you?
-
56% anchor on your main keyword in Ahrefs. This seems quite high.
-
Majestic shows 50,000 backlinks from 3200 referring domains from only 1600 subnets (usually a sign of buying links & spam).
Backlinks from:
And other spam/porn sites. You also have a ton of EDU & GOV links - more than seems normal. Definitely needs a disavow.
I don't think you have an owner problem. That's way too meta for this. Your content isn't unique and you have tons of link spam.

That's really difficult to say without looking at more precise details, although my hunch is that other marketing efforts should have been able to overcome an algorithmic change like ownership tags. More than ownership though Google has been moving towards offering a diversity of results so if the two websites are on the same domain that could be at play. Also increasing during that period of time are localization and personalization with the results so global competition could be gaining on your sites while yours remains unchanged.
To really break it down you'll want a professional looking at:
- Analytics - What referral trends have been at play, what wins have not been replicated recently
- Webmaster Tools - Any warnings that have gone addressed? Are we responsive? Mobile?
- Diversity of results - Are some of our big past traffic generating results no longer showing up? Maps? Images? Video? etc.
And many more. I think really having success with just a couple of those aspects would get you plenty of organic results.

Should we change the publish date in WordPress when updating a post?
Hi everyone, We're going through some of our old posts in our WordPress blog and updating them, adding new information, new links, and photos. My question: If we update the posts significantly, should we also update the "published" date to today? If we only correct some typos or a dead link, we don't touch the date. However, if we've done some real work on the post, we'd like to update the published date in order to bring it to the top of our blog feed and draw new attention to the post. However, I'm a little nervous that this could be seen by Google as spammy, as it's not technically a new post and the URL already exists in Google's index of our site. Here's an example of a post that was published several years ago and then updated a few week's ago with new information (and a new date stamp): http://www.eurocheapo.com/blog/barcelona-tip-five-cheap-eats-under-e6.html Any thoughts on this? Thanks, Tom

New EMD update effected my mom's legit author page? From page 1 in SERP to nowhere for her name
I think my mom's site, MargaretTerry.com was hit by this update for her name "Margaret Terry". Went from bouncing around the first page on google.com and .ca all the time to nowhere on the index. The results are now very strange, a mix of Youtube, linked in, and small book stores that she has done events at recently to promote her first book. I was checking after some of my SEO buddys were freaking out about their EMD's getting hit on Sunday. She is an aspiring author with a book coming out this month. There is obviously no ads or spam content on the site... I have never done SEO for it either except a bit of on page I guess. It sucks that people might be grabbing her book soon and when they Google her name nothing shows up. This couldn't have really happened at a worse time. Not to mention the hours spent building the site to her liking, free of charge of course 🙂 Is there anyone I can contact there to help me out? Shouldn't and EMD that is someones name still rank when you search their name?

My organic search results are down 16% since the Penguin update 4/24
Penguin has affected my search results down 16% When I look at my SEOmoz scan the only problem I see is "too many on page links" The problem is that my blog for each month is considered one page-eg august 2007 I wrote many blogs-the total on page links was 106-but that included all the blogs that were written in a month. The other problem area is duplicate content. I thought Penguin was after "link farming" which I do not do. Any advice how I can correct this? Brooke

Frequent updating of pages on website to rank better
Will updating each page often for example everyday or few days, rank the page and/or website better in google. The reason I ask is that I made 18 websites about three months ago and the traffic initially was alot higher and has fallen little by little thru the 3 months. Also how well my pages rank has also fallen. I just put out the websites, have done nothing else. No linking, etc. No updates. It is evident that without new links coming in, the website will fall in rank ie., link aquistion velocity But my question is if I update the pages and change content frequently will this improve my position in google and other search engines. The traffic on websites over the three months if graphed sort of looks like a stair case going down.
