Interstitial Ads - what do you think?
-
What do you think about this type of ads? any suggestions ?
-
Hi..
We deviated from the main topic... I'm not talking about PayWall, I'm talking about the ADS after few pages with the text "Continue to site".. -
Perfect. That was my hunch, but thanks for clearing that up.
-
These were Google Consumer Surveys, that function similar to a paywall. The visitor lands on the site and can see part of the article - a couple paragraphs. The survey covers the rest of the article. The visitor is asked to answer a survey (usually one question) and if the survey is answered access is granted to the visitor and the webmaster earns $ for each question answered.
If you go to the webpage below you can see a screenshot of The Daily Globe with the survey covering most of the article.

EGOL, Slightly off topic, but I'm curious: these were 3rd party surveys, ya? Not on site ones regarding your own site's usability, etc?
-
You have EGOL saying he's less likely to link to a site with these types of ads, as well as the greater bounce rate when running them, it's a small sample size when considering the internet as a whole, but I think that's a trend that holds true. That would be a tick in the "bad" column.
Ads themselves are supposed to be value neutral, but when over used can be a spam signal. So "neutral" to "bad" there.
I would look for different sources of ad revenue and qualify them heavily when making changes.
-
If your bounce rate goes up, your rankings might go down.
If people stop recommending your site, your rankings are not going to rise like they otherwise would.
I dumped out buckets of money when I took the surveys off. Buckets.
-
What about SEO? good? bad?
-
Agree with EGOL. They're also higher targets for being blocked based on how they're implemented or via adblocking software in general.
-
In general, I like ads and make my living by publishing a website that displays them.
I don't like interstitial ads because they are an annoyance and they require effort to close. I see them a lot on Slate and Forbes. If I didn't like some of their authors I would avoid those sites because of their interstitial ads. Forbes runs other ads that I really dislike and would not run them on my own website.
I have a section on one of my websites that links out to eight to ten news stories per day on other websites. I often see an interesting story on a site where my visitors are going to be hit with an interstitial ad, and before I include that story in my news I look to see if there is superior coverage of the same story on a website that does not display interstitial ads.
Would I run interstitial ads on my website? Probably not. I ran Google Surveys for a while (which are really similar to interstitials) but got rid of them even though they were paying buckets of money. My bounce rate became horrible after they were placed on the site. So, I figured that they were short term income and a long term decline in the popularity of my website.

We plan to implement an exit intent layer.

For mailing list expansion and/or to display personalized third party advertising. Any negative impact this may have on google rankings?
Shall we limit exit intent layer so to show only to users who visited at least 2 pages on our site?
Shall we reduce size of layer on mobile?

SEO penalty for changing domains by simply switching DNS on Wordpress and adding 301s server-side?
Working on a domain change for a client. They're hosted on Wordpress and their developer wants to simply switch out the DNS for the new domain to point to wordpress, and then have the old domain use 301s to redirect to the new domain. The url structure will be the same, but there will be no CMS connected to the old domain after the switch. Is this dangerous for SEO? A significant portion of their customers are from organic traffic and losing SEO value would be very bad.

Adding Copy on Inventory Listing Pages
Hi All, We manage a number of auto dealer websites which have their new & used inventory listed on them. There's a separate page for new, used, and CPO inventory, and on most web platforms any filtered inventory subpages are canonicalized back to one of the main inventory pages. Our question is - should we install unique copy on these to-level inventory pages? We're already installing unique meta and H1s and feel like copy could help these rank for more searches but we have a couple hesitations: Most big retailers like Amazon, Zappos, etc don't have copy on these types of pages. Putting the copy above the inventory would distract from shopping behavior, but installing it at the bottom of the page would hurt relevance. We'd appreciate anyone's insight or past experience here! Is it worth taking the time to write unique copy for these pages? Thanks everyone.

Penguin 3.0 - Very minor drops across the board. Don't think its a penalty, any ideas?
Hey All, I just can't figure this out. My site has been ranking well for years, i've never done anything suspicious with it and since the penguin update, my rankings have dropped across the board but only by about 4 - 8 places each, some terms have went up from nowhere to page 8 etc. I don't think i've been hit with a penalty, so I don't know what the problem is or how to recover from it. Does anybody have any ideas on what could be wrong? Update: Perhaps some sites that were linking to mine have been hit with a penalty? Update 2: I just found myself somehow in some spammy link network for 600 sites that looked identical, I don't know how or why my website is in this! I have disavowed all of these links 5 days ago, no change to rankings. pY80Dzi

Adding videos to a website
Hello! We are producing multiple videos (each about 1-minute long) for a company website. We have decided to use Wistia to host them, in order get the full SEO benefits of links to the videos. I have two questions: 1. Would it definitely be better for SEO to divide up the videos and place them on the various existing pages of the site that are related to the video content, rather than putting all the videos together on a separate video page? 2. If we do put different videos on different pages, would it be a bad idea also to have a video page with all the videos together? Would this be considered duplicate content? Thank you very much!

Does putting a Google custom search box on make Google think my users are bouncing?
I added a Google custom search box to my pages, that's doing an advanced Google search. A lot of people are using it. So users are coming to my site from a Google search, and then often performing another Google search on my site. Should I be worried that Google may interpret the resultant user behavior as a bounce or pogo-stick? Or will the fact that the second search occurred on my site, using custom search, and with advanced parameters signal to Google that this is not a dissatisfied user returning to Google? Thanks
