Is there an efficient way to block/filter referral spam in Google Analytics for a large network of websites?
-
Hello, everyone -
I'm looking for guidance on how to block or filter referral spam in Google Analytics. But I'm needing to block for an entire network of Wordpress websites. We have two networks which total over 2,500 websites. We are currently blocking sites we find out about via htaccess. This works, but only after we see we are getting hit with the spam. Updating 2,500+ Google Analytics accounts with filtering is not an ideal option due to the time factor and the fact that new bots coming out almost daily. We can continue the htaccess method, but does anyone have any other ideas for blocking referral spam for a large network of sites? These are the other ideas we have.
1. Blocking all traffic from Russia and China based up subnets. We know many will still get through, but it should block 50% of it, we hope.
2. Moving sites to Google Tag manager. This is a huge tasks but we have seen that sites using Tag Manager are not effected, at least for now.Other ideas are appreciated!

I'm sympathetic Jackson. I wish there was a server-side solution but I haven't heard anyone chime in with one yet.

Ditto. Thanks for the info, Dirk!

Thanks for pointing me to the other Q&A, Donna.
We've tried most the techniques described in the thread. But I still haven't tried to segment the traffic based on valid hostnames. That sounds like a more efficient way to do it.
It will probably still be time-intensive with 2,500+ sites, but I don't know of any other way. I'm hoping that will take care of a good chunk of the spam referrals.
Thanks again!

Good to know Dirk. Thanks!

Just to add to the answer of Donna - migrating Analytics to the Tag manager is not going to help. They are equally affected (it's quite easy to retrieve the analytics id which is inside).
rgds,
Dirk

Did you see this Q&A Jackson? I think a number of folks are using country filters.
Can't comment on tag manager. Maybe someone else can.

Stripping Out Referral Spam
I'm working my way through Google Analytics adding filters to all Spam referrals. 1. Am I doing this correctly:- Filter > Custom > Exclude - Campaign Source > Filter Pattern - Website address 2. I understand I can also strip out referral spam from past data Can anyone tell me how to do this or direct me to a blog or article about this? 3. Who on earth are Semalt, and why do they keep changing their URL and bombarding our websites? Appreciate any help. Christina

Google Analytics Automated Reporting
HI all, I tend to do a big reporting powerpoint deck using screenshots from google analytics and tables I create year end and mid year. It's like an 80 page report for the 10 webisite swe have and then I go ahead and make annotations as I see from the data. That being said this can take a lot of time, up to a 40 hours of time to pull it all together or more which is challenging when you have daily meetings. Anyhow, I've looked into automating and tried a couple things: 1. Tableau- but it keeps crashing and seems tedious 2. Dashlane and supergrabber- seem a bit tedious to set up too. Anyone have ideas on how to better shar ereporting in the organization in this type of format for a website (websites)? Organic, paid, traffic, etc. Laura

Anyone heard of or used Hadoop software for SEO/website analytics?
Hey Moz Community, We received an interesting email this morning from a client's marketing manager asking if we knew about or have ever used "Hadoop software" because "[Business owner name] says it’s supposed to help us see how people use our website and more." I've never heard of this software and upon looking around on the web, it says it can do a lot, but my client is a small law firm who average 800-1,000 visitors per month, mainly from their 2 local office cities/markets. Anyone have any thoughts on this or ever use this software? Thanks in advance. Patrick

Weird Google Analytics tracking question
I have a client that has a market place site, where people list goods and sell them, think something like Etsy. Instead of developing a system to show the users page views and things like that, does it sound reasonable to let them enter a Google Analytics property on the pages they list on, then let them monitor through GA? Does anyone see any fatal flaws in this thinking?
