Google's Geo Search Setting Gone Cuckoo!
-
Hey Everybody!
I thought I'd post about this because pretty much all of our members who do Local SEO are bound to run into this. Last week, when I was in the middle of training someone, I ran into something bizarre. Using Google's search settings to set my location to a remote locale, the local packs were returning me results for the correct city, but the organic results accompanying the pack were showing me results that appeared to be based on my own IP address instead ... in other words, Google was overriding my designated geolocation in favor of where it knows I'm actually located.
I was relieved to see Mike Blumenthal post on this (helped me realize I wasn't going crazy - haha) and I recommend that everyone who does Local for a living take a look:
http://blumenthals.com/blog/2015/05/24/google-location-results-still-screwy/
I also recommend checking out this G+ convo going on between John Mueller and others:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/+TerrySimmonds/posts/1BZ6guvy9mE
John's initial thought was that nothing has changed ... but something has definitely changed.
Do some of your own searches and see what you come up with.
Main takeaway here is that if you are trying to approximate clients' rankings in cities not your own, the results you are seeing may be very weird right now. Not sure if this is a temporary glitch or the forerunner to some change coming our way. This is a story to stay on top of, for sure.
What do you you all see?

Followup from Miriam - the issue is now resolved. Yay!

Hey Matt -
Really appreciate you letting me know you are seeing this same behavior in AU. I'm truly hoping it's a glitch, but I wondered the same thing as you - is this intentional and a precursor to some larger change? Oh my!
-
We are seeing the same thing here in AU. We have many client campaigns targeting where the client is so when the client Googles their phrases it approximates what they're seeing and we get the same as you - Maps are affected by the tools dropdown but organic is affected by the IP based geo-targeting on the bottom of the SERP.
We manually changed that location and then get other locations as well, so it's definitely tied into the two different location settings. We've normally had the location drop down affect all results but, same as you, we've seen the problem.
Makes me wonder if it's tied into some sort of mobile search update or if it's a glitch/bug. I worry they are doing it "on purpose" which is worse.

No UTM codes, How do you track in Google Analytics?
I see that Moz recommends not to use UTM codes as some directories will not allow a listing with a UTM code. I like to use tracking codes for my Google My Business (GMB) links so I can differentiate traffic/conversions from organic/google. Does anyone have a solution to measure the two in Google Analytics?

How to rank in Google against a business with the same name?
My client has a coworking space in London, but shares its name with a recruitment company also in London. When searching for my client's brand name, they don't appear anywhere on the first page as this recruitment company dominates. How can I rank prominently for my brand term if there is someone else in these top spots who isn't a direct competitor (in the typical sense)? Thank you!

Local SEO & Google Maps Question - 1 Company with Multiple Google Pages
Hey Mozzers! I'm working with a client who has 2 websites (different URLs completely), which one is for all parts and the other is for accessories only. They have multiple brick and mortar locations throughout the US and have done a nice job creating Google My Business pages for each and all verified. Their question is will it benefit them to create and verify another GMB page with same address, but place in "Suite B", a new phone number and apply the other URLs for the accessories site. The business name would also be different, but similar meaning Business 1 = ABC where as Business 2 = ABC Accessories. Their goal would be to try to have both rank or display to improve their local SEO. In theory it sounds like it will work given NAP would be satisfied within the GMB, but wanted to get the Moz community thoughts on this first before moving forward. Look forward to the replies. To Keep My Company's CO.UK Page Or Redirect It...
Hi Moz'ers - I have a question... Just to set the stage, we're a small recruiting firm, with an even smaller marketing department. I'm essentially a one man wrecking crew and don't have a ton of extra time. That being said, I know that page rank (and local office rank) are critical to our inbound lead generation, so I'm willing to invest some of my time into doing it right. The issue I'm having is ranking high as a local business in Austin, New York, San Francisco, and London, UK (to name a few). So far I've solved this through building dedicated subpages on our .com site and link building key word anchor text towards those pages. The only page that's not really gaining traction is our London page. So I decided to clone (most of) the site, tweak the text (to try and avoid dup text), and try and get that page to rank. I'm also having it hosted on a local server, have it using a local domain address suffix (co.uk), using local hreflang (on our .com site), created dedicated web 2.0 sites, and done my best to do some link building. The problem I'm facing is crapy local ranking, and limited bandwidth to maintain two sites. Should I: A) Scrap the co.uk site and focus on the .com (and subpages)
Local SEO | | bettsrecruiting
B) Keep the co.uk domain, and just redirect the URL to our .com page
C) Keep the co.uk domain, send all links from the home page to the relevant page on our .com page, and set up 301 redirects for all other relevant pages.
D) Hire someone to clean up, rewrite, and upkeep the co.uk site because it has the most SEO value in the long run and is the only way I'm going to be able to rank locally in London. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance! Tim Our European Site - http://bettsrecruiting.co.uk/

Search Results Issues
Hi All, I am having an issue with https://www.toyotaofwilmington.com/ If you do searches using Ad Preview for “2016 Toyota Camry in Wilmington, NC” or “2016 Toyota Corolla in Wilmington, NC” we are having issues with the website not showing up organically. We have the location set to Wilmington, NC, but their competition which is located in Jacksonville, NC which is over an hour away shows up organically on the first page. I am wondering if there are any obvious reasons as to why this would happen, or if there is something bigger I need to look at? Thank you, Cyrus

Local Search - Google Mobile Results (Web&App)
Hi, I have a client with multiple locations. One of the locations manager is searching for branded and non-branded keywords on his mobile phone and not able to locate the business (within the parking lot of the location). Our ranking reports via a local search platform and manual checks indicate the location is actually ranking well. and we're seeing progress in GA. Has anyone deal with something like this before? This is a location that recently opened to the public. The concern is around mobile web and app results. I'm looking for some guidance around how to approach the situation. I'm sorry I cannot provide more details on the client.

How many websites in Google Serps
Let say you are an electrician. You have a website in Google Serps After much deliberation you realise that the current domain name is giving the wrong signals to your potential customers. So you decide to rebrand to a new domain name. The new domain will have fresh content (no duplication). Question
Local SEO | | Mark_Ch
Can you have both instances live in Google Serps and eventually retire the current website via a 301 redirect to the new domain. Thanks Mark0
