SEO optimization for popular long-tail content
-
I was wondering if you all have tips / best practices to SEO-optimize new pages created for popular long-tail queries, as well as recommendations to assure we don't have duplicate content issues.
-
I would add that you may find Cyrus Shepard's Keywords to Concepts a useful read. You may find you don't need to optimize for every long tail term you want to catch.
-
My advice would be to write for topics rather than for keywords. For example, if you're building one page for "red widgets", one for "crimson widgets", and one for "scarlet widgets", ask yourself if those aren't all actually the same thing. If they are, write one page instead of three, and talk about red widgets using supporting widget-related vocabulary, because the search engines will not be fooled, and even if they are you don't want to have three light, near-duplicate pages competing against one another. Write the best page about red widgets the internet has ever seen. Google is increasingly good at understanding context.

SEO value of old press releases (as content)?
Howdy Moz Community, I'm working with a client on migrating content to a new site/CMS and am wondering whether anyone has thoughts on the value of old press releases. I'm familiar with the devaluation of press release links from early 2013, but I'm wondering more about their value as content. Does importing old press releases (3-5 years old) create contextual depth of content that has some value for the site as a whole (even though the news contained within is useless)? Or, do these old press releases just create clutter and waste time (in migration). The site has a wealth of additional content (articles and videos), so the press releases wouldn't be covering up for thin content. I'm just wondering whether there's any best practices or a general rule of thumb. Thanks!

Communities Served on Page for SEO
Hi, We have an urgent care facility outside of our hospital located in an other location and we would like to increase the organic seo for the highest traffic surrounding towns. I have toyed with the following ideas but would like to know what everyone thinks is best. 1.) Just included "proudly serving patients in Area 1, Area 2, Area 3, Area 4" on the bottom of the page. 2.) Create a page that says areas served... then each page would have a non-duplicated and original content for that area. 3.) build a microsite for the urgent care site and optimize with content from option 2 above and just add option one to our main website.

Footer and SEO
Hi All... We have a client who wants to really minimize and simply their website. They want to remove some of the footer info. Obviously we do not want to remove any contact or address but they would like to remove the footer menu system. I have read various things about it NOT effecting SEO and that it is there for user navigation and usability. Thoughts? Opinions? zach

Local SEO - Rich content and list of towns enough?
I'm working on creating pages to target local SEO. I've created pages for example 'wedding band london' with useful content and optimised them with title tags, alt tags etc and will continue to do so for major cities and queries where there are significant search volume. However, I also want to pickup longtail local search queries such as 'wedding band camden' etc... Will adding a list of towns somewhere on the page for each city or county help drive traffic to the site from such queries? Is so what's the best way to structure the page?

Duplicate Content - Potential Issue.
Hello, here we go again, If I write an article somewhere, lets say Squidoo for instance, then post it to my blog on my website will google see this as duplicate content and probably credit Squidoo for it or is there soemthing I can do to prevent this, maybe a linkk back to Squidoo from my website or a dontfollow on my website? Im not sure so any help here would be great, Also If I use other peoples material in my blog and link back to them, obviously I dont want the credit for the original material I am simply collating some of this on my blog for others to have a specific library if you like. Is this going to damage my websites reputation? Thanks again peeps. Craig Fenton IT
