Link Spam from Competitor Help
-
A clients link profile is recently getting lots of spam links related to "abortion pills" and "does my husband cheat" I found a few of the sites that link, and it appears that there is some malicious code on the site injecting links at the top of the site.

Can anyone look at the link above and tell me what network or software is creating these links?

There's not a whole lot to be done about other sites getting hacked, unfortunately - even if you did find the program/network that is creating the bad links, you might not be able to tell which competitor of yours is doing it, and even if you did it would be difficult to prove or get them to stop. Your client's site may even not be the real target - link spam networks will often target a variety of random sites in addition to their real targets to cover their tracks. The good news is that Google is pretty astute at ignoring these types of links. It's highly unlikely (though not impossible, unfortunately) that your client will see a link penalty from this malware.
Here's what I would do in this situation:
- Contact as many of the hacked sites as you can/want to, and let them know they've been hacked (that's just a courteous thing to do, as it's likely the site owners have no idea, but it's up to you how much time you want to spend on this).
- Be proactive about disavowing as many of the spammy inbound links as you can find (you're probably already doing this, I'm just saying). You could probably do this at a domain level since it sounds like the linking sites aren't related to your client's site in any way.
- Take a little extra time in the next few months to build some high-quality links to your client's site to make their link profile a little extra shiny.
Taking steps to guard against any damage/fix any damage that may have been done will be a better use of your time and effort than trying to figure out who's doing it and why, IMO.

Thaomas,
Thanks for this. I'm sorry If I did not make it clear. My clients site was not exploited, we have hundreds of links from these types of sites. We think a competitor tried to link spam.

Link Building - Blogger Outreach - Need Help!
I am looking forward to create a solid link building campaign for my affiliate blog. But, what I want is completely GENUINE and effective link building. Could anyone please suggest what strategies should I opt for. I am planning to get Guest Blogging done? But, is it effective anymore. I have read so much about companies posting on Private networks.

Paid links that are passing link equity from a blog?
We have a well-known blogger in our industry with whom we've had a long-standing relationship. We've had inbound links from his blog for many, many years. Today I noticed that we are running a banner ad listed on all pages of his blog under a heading that says "Sponsors." He has dedicated an entire page of his site giving full disclosure of all advertising. However, all of the links on his site pointing to us are passing link equity. To my knowledge they've been this way ever since they were first established years ago. I am fairly certain this fellow, with whom we have an excellent relationship, neither knows nor cares what a "nofollow" attribute is. I am afraid that if I contact him with a request that he add "nofollow" attributes to all of our links that it will damage our relationship by creating friction. To someone who knows nothing and cares nothing about SEO, asking them to put a "nofollow" on a link could either seem like a technical request they don't know how to handle, or something even potentially "shady" on our part. My question is this: Considering how long these links have been there, is this even worth worrying about? Should I just forget about it and move on to bigger fish, or, is this a potentially serious enough violation of Google Webmaster guidelines that we should pursue getting those links "nofollow" attributes added? I should add that we haven't received any "unnatural" link notifications from Google, ever, and haven't ever engaged in any questionable link-building tactics.

Developing a link profile.....
So we are a brand new site looking to establish a link profile of earned links vs. manipulative link building practices and have received some conflicting information. Our goal is to provide users and webmasters of relevant websites with useful content about the areas and topics we cover and let them decide to link to us. We have been advised by some parties that in order to develop a base set of links we should enter our website into directories. Now I understand entering it into some of the main directories such as BOTW and Yahoo etc, but please offer your thoughts on smaller less official directories. Thanks in advance. Scott

Removing links from another site
Hello, Some site that I have never been able to access as it is always down has over 3,000 links to my website. They disappeared the other week and our search queries dramatically improved but now they are back again in Google Webmaster and we have dropped again.I have contacted the site owner and got no response and I have also put in a removal form (though I am not sure this fits for that) and asked Google to remove as they have been duplicating our content also. It was in my pending section but has now disappeared. This links are really damaging our search and the site isnt even there. Do I have to list all 3,000 links in the link removal to Google or is there another way I can go about telling them the issue.Appreciate any help on this
