SEO Keyword Research

Hi,
We are SEO beginners so please bear with us!
We are trying to promote "Web based Invoicing Software". The SEO company we have signed with offer us 5 keywords for the package we are on with them. They have suggested\offered us:
1. Invoicing Software - Fine
2. Online Invoicing - Fine
3. Online Invoicing Software - Covered by 1 and 2
4. Small Business Invoicing Software - Covered by 1
5. Invoice Template - Fine. Will Invoice templateS be covered on this one too?My question is does number 3 cover number 1,2 & 4 anyway? If so I am thinking to not go for 1,2, & 4 just keep 3 and choose three other new keywords. Would this be a better strategy and "more for our money?" Or, keep 1 and 2 and lose 3 and 4, would that be a good option. So, in summary options are (all assuming keeping number 5)
1. Keep all
2. Keep 1 & 2 - Lose 3 & 4
3. Keep 3 - Lose 1,2 & 44. Any other combo you can suggest?
Any advice welcomed
Thanks

Totally normal. For me, what I keep in mind, is that there''s so much great information out there and awesome boards like this where people share experiences, and there's several plans of attack. Long tail can help rank for some short tail but I'd never recommend expecting it to be interchangeable.
For example, "software" is way, way more competitive to rank for since it's everything that falls under software - Microsoft Office, Amazon, Wiki, PCMag, New Egg - and so general that it's hard to get high rankings on that word alone. There's also a HUGE difference in user intent on "software" (I want Windows 8; or, what's new in the software world) and "online invoicing software" (I need software that lets me do invoicing online). Sometimes with long tail, you capture a better/more accurate audience to then give you better conversions.
Good luck

Thanks for the response, thats very helpful insight for us. We thought long tail did cover short tail so we may have to rethink our keywords altogether now. Maybe we should go for the easier long tail to start with and work up to the short tail. Is that a normal plan for a start up with limited budget?
Thanks

Good for you for checking to see if what you are being offered may be worthy. First, how did they get these words? The reason I ask is because the biggest keyword battle I fight is figuring out how our SEARCHERS search, not what we think our customers/potentials use.
What do I mean? I'll use an example. "Benchtop printer" is the company term but people are searching for a "desktop printer." Optimize for benchtop printer and you'll never connect.
So, make sure that whatever you pick maps back to your users/customers. If you don't know, then you are risking everyone on nothing.
As far as this list goes, assuming it's vetted, there's a difference between head, or short tail "software" and long tail "online invoicing software" keywords - long tail DO NOT automatically cover short tail. Even plural terms aren't interchangeable with singular. Head, or short tail, terms are usually way harder and competitive to rank for.
Beyond that, because I don't know how you are grouping your site content or what your hierarchy will look like, I won't comment on what to keep or what to leave. Just picking keywords in no way ensures good SEO.

Price for SEO Audit & Strategy
Hello, I am a part-time SEO and own a few web properties, in addition to owning other small businesses. I do the best I can in my spare time to grow my site's traffic and try to create decently valuable content. However, I feel like I am not getting the best results possible, so I am wondering if anyone on here would be interested in helping me with a site audit and strategy. I can do the grunt work myself, I just want someone with a fresh perspective to weigh in and guide me on what I should focus on to achieve my goals. Please let me know if you're interested and how much it may cost. A range is fine. Here are the specs on my site & niche: About 20 pages of content, most of which have 96-100 page optimization scores on Moz. DA of 19, home PA 32 Most competitive KW is 22 difficulty, 83 opp and 67 potential. Thanks so much, any insight is much appreciated. Please respond here or DM me directly. Best, Ricardo

Domain Name Keyword Change
Hello. I have a question. I currently have a client who is exploring the option of changing his domain name to one which includes a key word and his company name. Currently he is using a domain name which does not include a keyword and does not include his company name. I understand that with proper redirects we can keep a significant amount of the juice behind it and we aren't so concerned about the domain name change. However my clients only concern is this. His company and new domain have the words Best Buy in it. He is concerned about the words best buy being in the domain name as it would be directly competing with the electronics giants. Should this even be a concern? He isn't in the electronics business and the remaining of the domain would include a keyword which directly relates to his business. Any input would be appreciated.

How To Rank For Easy Keywords (24-26 keyword competitivness)
Hello Moz members, Quick Question for today !!
Competitive Research | | SebastianP
Please, who is involved in backlinking processes/White hat SEO these kind of things pm me, I really appreciate some great responses to this specific thread. I have a blog 3 months old with quality articles on it (600 to 1000 words each article+fotos+videos+infographics), and the keyword targeted that is on the homepage have that 26 kW competitiveness keyword. What I really need to focus on if I want to be number 1 for that term? somehow on social media more?
My competition seems to have little to no backlinks, but they have a domain or PA bigger than 30. How can I increase my domain and page authority faster?I still have 30 backlinks and PA/DA and also PR = 0. I want to know specifically which tasks I need to Master if I want to be number 1 in Google for a keyword that have JUST 26 Keyword competitiveness in MOZ.
I mean, this is a very easy keyword to rank for but I didn't rank yet. Maybe from my description you can give me some gold nuggets here Thank you so much ! Regards,

Keyword - Competition between competitors
So, I'm about 2-3 weeks into my subscription and see a renewal coming. I love the information I'm getting - but I really want to maximize my capabilities with these tools. Any article/blogs or forum post suggestions that I should read would be awesome, right now I'm still in that phase where i see lots of cool things - but have no idea to fully use them to really give me that even bigger boost. My First Question is - There are some keywords, that I climb and sometimes slip. But overall a competitor and i flip flop between 15-22 range for it. What would be a good way for me to really add that extra push to throw me down into the top ten and leave them in the dust?.. Also on the Keyword topic - There are a lot of keywords they probably rank for that I don't, what is the best way to go about identifying keywords they may targeting/have a good presence in that I'm not aware of. I do have a site that is on multiple newspapers, and .gov sites. Among other things... This has already proven to be very good for me. But I'm 99% sure I have a few/lot of leaks, that if they were plugged - We would see a lot of good things come from those results.

Keyword Ranks reported by SEOMOZ don't match actual searches
SEO Moz reported that various keywords I was tracking were not in the top 50 results on Yahoo or Bing, yet when I did a Yahoo or Bing search for those keywords (from multiple computers and not logged into any Yahoo or MSN/Bing account) I found the keywords easily. What's the scoop?

SEO Struggles
Hey everyone, I am a web programmer and have been fooling around with SEO for about a year now and just started to get pretty serious about it so I signed up for SEOmoz. We just launched our new site about 4 months ago (http://www.cincinnatiwebtec.com) and Google just started ranking us about a month ago. I believe we have done everything right with H1 tags, H2 tags, Title tags, alt tags, inbound links, url structure, etc. but yet we still can't even seem to get to the 1st or 2nd page of Google for "Cincinnati Web Design". I know it's going to be a competitive keyword because the people fighting for it are the SEO experts, but if you were to compare a person on page 2 or 3 to us, some of them have nothing to do with Cincinnati web design and I highly doubt they even bother with SEO, but yet they are ranked higher than us. i.e. http://www.hollandadvertising.com/ - the only place I see Cincinnati is the address at the bottom and they have only 30 inbound links according to yahoo. On top of that, they are an advertising firm, not a web design firm! I was wondering if you guys would take a look at our site above and offer some suggestions. Do you think we are spreading the keywords too thin? I mean I just can't think of why a company like the Holland Advertising example above would rank higher than us. We clearly have a more SEO optimized site, more inbound links, more quality links, 0 errors, 0 warnings, etc. I am just at a loss. Hope you guys can help. Thanks guys, Chris
