Hey:
Migrating a site to a brand new domain after doing all the things to do doesn't guarantee you will keep all your rankings, but if the change is mandatory, and assuming you site will be the same (just a domain change) I suggest to:
- As you said, make sure you are doing a cross domain 301 redirect, so if someone is trying to request http://olddomain.com/fake-page-123 the user should be redirected to http://newdomain.com/fake-page-123. Usually you can do this in Apache servers modifying the .htaccess with this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} olddomain.com$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]-
Make sure validate both domains in Google Search Console (and if in your market it's relevant, Bing Webmaster Tools) before migrate. After migrate, make a Change of Address Request from olddomain.com to newdomain.com
-
As usual, make sure your sitemap.xml it's up to date in the new domain and try to block all the innecesary pages on robots.txt to avoid spend your crawl budget (just if neccessary, in large site it's more common). Send them to Google through Google Search Console as soon as your site is migrated.
-
Optional: Before migration, would be great to check any 404 errors on the new site to address them when you migrate your site, I suggest to use:
-
Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools (Crawl Errors)
-
Screaming Frog search from broken links
-
Open Site Explorer from Moz (Top Pages) and if necesary in large sites, Majestic.com
-
Logs files
-
Google Analytics history (page views)
-
After gathering all this data, make sure the URLs are returning 404 with Screaming Frog, List Mode
Let me know if this is helpful for you.

This is a duplicate question - you have about 4-5 of almost the same question on the forum. Please don't cross-post or re-post. Almost every post on the forum gets at least a couple answers to please hold on and let us work our way there.

Hello,
As with any 301 redirect, you can expect to lose some part of your ranking potential provided by your link profile. Assuming you conduct your 301 correctly (each page being forwarded to a relevant, equivalent page), you will not lose out on any on-site ranking potential.
Numbers range in terms of how much you stand to lose from your link profile's ranking potential. From my research, the number sits somewhere between 1% and 10% - I always use 5% as an estimate.
Long story short, you will lose some ranking potential, although this may not be enough to lose actual rankings, depending on the strength of your website compared to your competition. You can expect to see a small dip, and it will be permanent if you do not conduct any continuing SEO. However, based on your question, I believe you are conducting regular SEO on your website, so these ranking dips should be temporary.
You can avoid this by attempting to push all links currently on your website to your new domain and regain some of this lost "link juice". I would also suggest pushing all links towards your new domain name moving forward to maximize your link profile ranking potential (obviously).
Hope this answers your question!
Best regards,
Rob

New Domain VS New Page Backlink?
Assuming you've already got a link from:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Sam.at.Moz
sitea.com/page1 (Moz domain rank 55, Moz page rank 30) You have two choices for another link: 1. Another link on the same domain but a new page:
sitea.com/page2Â (Moz domain rank 55, Moz page rank 30) 2. A link on a new domain but with a lesser domain & page rank
siteb.com/page1 (Moz domain rank 30, Moz page rank 20) Assuming you have no other links to your site - both sites are relevant to your industry, both 5 years old, both have the same number of visitors/external links/ads and the content and anchor text remains the same. Which will have a bigger impact on SERP movements? Sam0 -
Migrating e-commerce platform (same domain). Do I need to be concerned about these changes?
We are moving a domain from oscommerce to prestashop.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
We will setup 301 redirects for each page and have made sure that new platform is following SEO best practices. I read a lot that it is critical to keep changes to a minimum when migrating to a new domain, but is this also critical when migrating just to a new e-commerce platform (same domain)? Change of URL is unavoidable, but what about these other changes below? Would you be very concerned about doing them at the same time, or rather would you do them some time after the migration? title tag (about 30% of text in title tag will be different) meta description tag (more customized and varied meta description than before) h1Â (expanding product name with some relevant keywords for a number of products) additional table with product features (additional content in product pages) adding additional products to store moving to https instead of http Product descriptions and product images and category descriptions will remain the same. Replicating title tag, title description and h1 from old site would actually imply quite a lot of additional work at this point and we would have to make the change anyway at a later point, so if it is not a major risk I would prefer to do it in one go. Any thoughts?0 -
Website losing rank positions after https
Hi there.. we were having a good increase in rankings since using Moz and then we purchased an ssl certificate so our website would run under https... to make sure our website is only accessed through https, we have used a method on .htaccess (appache) to make sure the website is only reached through https, using: RewriteEngine on
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | mszeer
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R,QSA] after doing this, from our last crawl perspective, we lost several positions that we were increasing.. what have we done wrong ? we have to fix this asap, please help us...0 -
301 Pandalized Domain to Authority Domain?
Hello, If I redirect a Panda penalized domain (DA 65, bad link profile) to another authority domain (DA 35, clean link profile), will it still carry a penalty? I've heard cases where a panda penalized domain moved to a brand new domain carried the penalty.

New website won't rank for branded keywords in Google, but does in Bing
We launched a website in October www.butterfly.com. The branded product name "Butterfly Body Liners" will not rank until page 2 of Google, but it ranks #1 in Bing. Organic traffic never really picked up so it's not easy to tell if it's been "hit" by any penalty. The strange thing is, this website:Â http://archive.is/PQZdO is ranking #1. This is an archived version of the site. Does anyone have any insight as to why this is happening?

What is best practice SEO approach to re structuring a website with multiple domains and associated search engine rankings for each domain?
Hello Mozzers, I'm trying to improve and establish rankings for my website which has never really been optimised. I've inherited what seems to be a mess and have a challenge for you! The website currently has 3 different www domains all pointing to the one website, two are .com domains and one is a .com.au - the business is located in Australia and the website is primarily targeting Australian traffic. In addition to this there are a number of other non www domains for the same addresses pointing to the website in the CMS which is Adobe Business Catalyst. When I check Google each of the www domains for the website has the following number of pages indexed: www.Domain1,com 5,190 pages
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | JimmyFlorida
www.Domain2.com 1,520 pages
www,Domain3.com.au 149 pages What is best practice approach from an SEO perspective to re organising this current domain structure? 1. Do I need to use the .com.au as the primary domain given that we are in this market and targeting traffic here? Thats what I have been advised and it seems to be backed up by what I have read here. 2. Do we re direct all domains to the primary .com.au domain? This is easily done in the Adobe Business Catalyst CMS however is this the same as a 301 redirect which is the best approach from an SEO perspective? 3. How do we consolidate all of the current separate domain rankings for the 3 different domains into the one domain rankings within Google to ensure improved rankings and a best practice approach? The website is currently receiving very little organic search traffic so if its simpler and faster to start again fresh rather than go through a complicated migration or re structure and you have a suggestion here please feel free to let me know your ideas! Thank you!0 -
Content on New Domain or Sub Directory of Existing Domain?
I have a client with a well aged, high DA site. They rank well for their wedding photography business in several cities. They are launching a new service which is related to photography (photobooths and flipbooks) which they built and developed content on a new domain. The existing domain has 0 links with a DA of 1. The site is brand new.. Is there any drawback to moving the existing content on the new domain to a sub directory of the high authority domain? EX: http://domain.com/newcompany The look, feel, and design of the new site / service is much different than the high DA site. My thoughts are that this will give them an automatic step up, especially since they will be marketing this in several major cities. Also, since the design will be different, if it is good to move to the subdir, should we put the new company name in the subdir folder or something keyword friendly like domain.com/photobooth as opposed to domain.com/newcompanyname. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
