Another Duplicate Content - eCommerce Question!
-
We are manufacturers of about 15 products and our website provides information about the products. We also offer them for sale on the site. Recently we partnered with a large eCommerce site that sells many of these types of products. They lifted descriptions from our site for theirs and are now selling our products. They have higher DA than us.
Will this cause a ranking problem for us? Should we write unique descriptions for them?
Thanks!

I totally agree with Linda. it won't hurt your site or won't penalize. I think the best solution for this is, just simply ask your partner site to change the product description rel= "author" as your site name. It will help the both sites.

There is no duplicate content penalty, as such. (Google "duplicate content penalty" for many articles about this.) When Google comes across duplicate content, it simply decides which version should appear in its index and drops the other one(s). This won't affect the high-quality content you have on other parts of your site.

Thanks Eric. I am not concerned about the distributor outranking me for the specific product name. Actually I'd prefer they get the sale. I am concerned that Google will in some way "penalize" my site for generic terms related to the category the products are in. The site is intended to be informational / educational and hopefully drive popularity of the products and sales.
And to Anthony's point above, there is additional content on the product pages. Although the reviews are provided by a 3rd party (Shopper Approved) so I don't think they are actually indexed as part of the page. I think it is some JS magic that I don't pretend to understand.
So I guess I am concerned it may look bad overall to Google and they would put us under some sort of Duplicate Content penalty. Is there such a penalty?
Ultimately looks like there's no avoiding writing some fresh copy just to be safe!

If the content was on your site to begin with (and was already crawled by Googlebot), then you would get credit for the content. If you're the manufacturer, I would think the eComm site would want to rewrite so they could drive sales and stand out from the crowd a bit. I also know it's a challenge in many cases to rewrite content due to vendor restrictions or staffing constraints.
That being said... Unique is always better because it will help the site rank within the same target market as their competitors, and will differentiate from the competition. I wouldn't worry too much about someone using your descriptions, since you should ultimately get authoring credit for the content (in Google's eyes) if it came from you first. All factors being equal, your site would prevail. It's possible you may be outranked for a product term if the other sites are stronger, but that evidence will come with time.
I would recommend asking the eComm site to rewrite/make the content unique, since that would do better for both parties. You're gambling with the same content on multiple sites, so its possible you could be outranked by a distributor. If you don't have restrictions around the content, I would either update your content or ask them to update theirs. Hopefully Google will see your site (the manufacturer) as a more relevant source, but I've seen some pretty funky things in the past so I wouldn't guarantee it.

Yes, this certainly could cause issues with your rankings. If the site is more authoritative than yours it certainly could be an issue. I would most certainly provide unique descriptions for them. Especially since this is a small number of products, not thousands of products. Also, focus on improving your content as well. Is there anything additional you could add to your page that would help the user? Perhaps some fresh user reviews or testimonials?

Internal duplicated content on articles, when is too much?
I have an automotive rental blog with articles that explain the pros of renting a specific model. So in this articles the advantages of rental versus the buying of a new model. This advantages are a list with bullets like this:
Technical SEO | | markovald
Rental | Buy new car
Rental:
Free car insurance
Free assistance
etc.
Buy new car
You have to pay insurance
You have to pay assistance
etc. etc. I want to do this because i want to make all articles like landing pages...
This "advantages box" have 100 characters. The general length of articles on my blog is 500/600 characters. So i have an average of 15/20% internal duplicated content on all my articles. Is this bad for seo? Any alternatives?0 -
Javascript tabbed navigation and duplicate content
I'm working on a site that has four primary navigation links and under each is a tabbed navigation system for second tier items. The primary link page loads content for all tabs which are javascript controlled. Users will click the primary navigation item "Our Difference" (http://www.holidaytreefarm.com/content.cfm/Our-Difference) and have several options with each tabs content in separate sections. Each second tier tab is also available via sitemap/direct link (ie http://www.holidaytreefarm.com/content.cfm/Our-Difference/Tree-Logistics) without the js navigation so the content on this page is specific to the tab, not all tabs. In this scenario, will there be duplicate content issues? And, what is the best way to remedy this? Thanks for your help!

Duplicate Content Problems
Hi I am new to the seomoz community I have been browsing for a while now. I put my new website into the seomoz dashboard and out of 250 crawls I have 120 errors! So the main problem is duplicate content. We are a website that finds free content sources for popular songs/artists. While seo is not our main focus for driving traffic I wanted to spend a little time to make sure our site is up to standards. With that said you can see when two songs by an artist are loaded. http://viromusic.com/song/125642 & http://viromusic.com/song/5433265 seomoz is saying that it is duplicate content even though they are two completely different songs. I am not exactly sure what to do about this situation. We will be adding more content to our site such as a blog, artist biographies and commenting maybe this will help? Although if someone was playing multiple bob marley songs the biography that is loaded will also be the same for both songs. Also when a playlist is loaded http://viromusic.com/playlist/sldvjg on the larger playlists im getting an error for to many links on the page. (some of the playlists have over 100 songs) any suggestions? Thanks in advance and any tips or suggestions for my new site would be greatly appreciated!

Tips and duplicate content
Hello, we have a search site that offers tips to help with search/find. These tips are organized on the site in xml format with commas... of course the search parameters are duplicated in the xml so that we have a number of tips for each search parameter. For example if the parameter is "dining room" we might have 35 pieces of advice - all less than a tweet long. My question - will I be penalized for keyword stuffing - how can I avoid this?

How to prevent duplicate content at a calendar page
Hi, I've a calender page which changes every day. The main url is
Technical SEO | | GeorgFranz
/calendar For every day, there is another url: /calendar/2012/09/12
/calendar/2012/09/13
/calendar/2012/09/14 So, if the 13th september arrives, the content of the page
/calendar/2012/09/13
will be shown at
/calendar So, it's duplicate content. What to do in this situation? a) Redirect from /calendar to /calendar/2012/09/13 with 301? (but the redirect changes the day after to /calendar/2012/09/14) b) Redirect from /calendar to /calendar/2012/09/13 with 302 (but I will loose the link juice of /calendar?) c) Add a canonical tag at /calendar (which leads to /calendar/2012/09/13) - but I will loose the power of /calendar (?) - and it will change every day... Any ideas or other suggestions? Best wishes, Georg.0 -
Business/Personal Blog Duplicate Content
Quick Question. I am in the process of launching a new website for my IT business which will include a blog. I also want to start up my personal blog again. I want to publish some blog posts to both my business and personal blogs but I don't want to have any duplicate content issues. I am not concerned with building the SERPs of my personal blog but I am very focused on the business blog/site. I am looking for some ideas of how I can publish content to both sites without getting hurt by duplicate content. Again, I am not concerned with building up the placement of my personal site but I do want to have a strong personal site that helps build my name. Any help on this would be great. Thanks!

Using robots.txt to deal with duplicate content
I have 2 sites with duplicate content issues. One is a wordpress blog. The other is a store (Pinnacle Cart). I cannot edit the canonical tag on either site. In this case, should I use robots.txt to eliminate the duplicate content?
