Search visibility increase with international SEO
-
Hi Moz Community,
I am wondering if there is any tool and/or any sort of standard increase in search visibility I can assume that we will have with our website if we expand to start targeting Spanish with our site.
At the moment we receive about 6000-7000 visits a day with 75% of that coming from the US and UK. I am wondering is there any way to make a rough assumption on visibility that will increase by launching a new Spanish speaking website. It would be a subdirectory, not a subdomain or gTLD. I am struggling to find a concrete answer on this and i'd like to make a semi-accurate forecast of the traffic we can expect based on the increase in search visibility that our Spanish language site will provide us.
Thanks

Well on mine first answer there is number for 54M population of hispanic/latin in US. But you can't know how many of them do searches in english or in spanish?
I can talk about Bulgarians. Even if they migrate to other country they still talk in Bulgarian in home, watch Bulgarian TV, read online Bulgarian newspapers, purchases Bulgarian goods. And more interesting - they still search in Bulgarian. Example - even if google.co.uk you can get Bulgarian searches and results. Real case - a friend of mine own TV repair service center and get phone call from London about TV repair. Just lady's there want to find someone to fix his mother TV. Funny - distance between service center and home was almost 100-200 meters.
You don't know what you don't know...

Thanks again Peter. Will try that out. I have actually done all the keyword preparation and SEO stuff, it is really just a matter of building the thing now. But I will give that a try again and get the numbers and see.
Basically, what I was trying to do was get an idea of how much more visibility we will have in Latin America and Spain with a Spanish language specific site since as I understand it, that would give us more visibility where people search with language/country specific versions of Google (such as Google.es vs. Google.com and Google.co.uk). If I could get some kind of percentage I could apply that to what we currently get from those areas and get a better idea of what kind of increase in traffic we should get, but I figured it wouldn't be that easy.
Thanks again and if you have any other suggestions, keep 'em coming.

Well - true. This is true forecasting w/o market evaluation.
For example - your site can be for local business. Can Latin America visit it? No, but local hispanic or latin residents can visit it.
Or you can sell something expensive - RollsRoyces, Teslas, or Elon Musk's Rockets. Can latin america audience interested about this? Probably.
Or you can share them Taco's recipes - YES! They will be interested. There is special market evaluation reports but this report will take months and will be expensive. It's more accurate, but it's also shoot in the dark.
One thing that definitely will happen - your traffic will rise. You can evaluate using KeywordPlanner and special keywords on Spanish how is monthly searches of them. It's easy - go in search console and grab your best keywords for searches. Like Top100 of them. Translate them to Spanish and then go in KWP paste them and watch monthly searches about them. You also can compare English KW vs. Spanish KW as difference.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the answer. I had a feeling there would be a lot of shooting in the dark here, but I thought maybe there was some more surefire way to go about this, but I guess that is the nature of forecasting. Thanks again for the answer.

I believe that noone can give you answer. But let's try!
US population is 318.9 million (2014). UK population is 64.1 million (2013). This make very rough 383 million.
Hispanic or latino population in US is approx 54M. http://www.cdc.gov/minorityhealth/populations/REMP/hispanic.htmlNow let's count all spanish talking in the world. This is Spain + whole South/Latin America except Brazil (they talk in Portuguese). Latin America is 626M (2015 est.), Brazil is 200M (2013) and Spain is 46.77M (2014). So rough calculation there will be 472.77M.
As you can see with this translation you can effective double your potential audience. As you can see i talk about "potential audience" because there are many things can goes wrong. But maybe in long term (this is shoot in the dark!) this can double (or even more) your traffic in best scenario. Or (again shoot in the dark) this can bring you 15% increase (US-hispanic+UK/US+UK population). Of course both are very rough assumptions.

International website sharing with .com/.au/.uk
I have a small business in the United States and would like to copy our main website for my international partners. My website is a .com. I think that their domains will end in their country codes: .au and .uk. We are open to using different domains. We plan to share blog articles and other content, but do not wish to be penalized for duplication. I have tried to read articles on this topic, but am unfamiliar with a lot of the terms. Is there any way to do this simply? Many thanks, Steph

Country specific SEO
Hi I have a question regarding country specific SEO and what would the best approach be? I have website A which is currently ranking well in Google country A, I would now like to introduce a new website B which is only specific to users in Google country B. The only difference between the 2 websites is that website B will have different prices and products for the users in Google country B. From a development point of view we would like to only have one instance of the website which can be served to users in country A and B all that we would do is change some of the content and prices based on the user IP which means that users in country A see a different version of the website to users in country B. Is this approach fine from and organic point of view? Or would we need to have 2 separate websites and make use of Href Lang?

SEO in foreign languages
Hi everyone, I currently run a website called Barquitos www.barquitos.com The site is an extension of a shop that is based here in Spain. Though because the town is particularly touristy we built the website to offer English and Spanish as language options on the site. English on Barquitos.com and Spanish through a sub domain es.barquitos.com. In an ideal world I want to rank the English version for English phrases on Google.co.uk, and the Spanish sub domain on es.barquitos.com. However, my Spanish is only at a reasonable standard, probably not good enough to look at writing quality content in Spanish. Is building up the Page Authority and Domain authority for the English main domain enough to rank the Spanish sub domain or do we need a focussed approach for both languages? Any tips or advice for helping to rank sub domains in foreign languages would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone Stu

How important is .ca for Canadian searches?
We currently own a .com domain name, but the .ca is already taken. We're looking at setting up a Canadian ecommerce store, how important is it to have the store on a .ca domain as opposed to a .com? We can always set it up on the .com and attempt to optimize to Canada but in the long run are we shooting ourselves in the foot? Thanks!

Is .in domain affecting international traffic inflow to my site?
My holiday website http://seekandhide.in/ was completed and went live in Feb 2012. Last month I got 83% traffic from India and 3-5% each from USA and UK. The rest is a mixed bag from other countries. This is largely the trend since the last 3-4 months. I want to attract more organic traffic from UK and rest of Europe. My SEO consultant says that with a .in domain that will be difficult. My website currently features unique holiday properties in India that typically attract European tourists so I don't think it is a product issue. But both website visits and sales enquiries remain primarily Indian even though total number of visitors have increased gradually over the last 6 months.. My queries are 1. Is it only the .in domain that's affecting inflow of international traffic? 2. Is there anything that I can do to offset it? 3. I own seekandhide.co.uk too. Is there something I can do with that site without building a whole different website there? If I shift completely to .co.uk, I will have the same issue of being geographically limited and end up losing Indian traffic. 4. Is there something else that is not ok on the site that I am missing? 5. Advice that I get from a lot of consultants is to buy seekandhideindia.com but I plan to add international properties in a couple of years so that name would limit my appeal. Thanks in advance! Sudha

Japanese search engines - any tips?
Has anyone got any tips on targeting searchers in Japan from a UK site? This is for a (very) small and niche B2B site. I've looked at the WBF on international SEO etc. so here, I'm hoping you'll be able to help with which engines & optimisation tips for those engines - I've read that Google Japan is big, but are there any others that people would recommend? Thanks!

What's the best strategy for checking international rankings?
Hi There- I am looking to optimize sites serving the UK and Austrailia markets. I feel like I have a good handle on how to go about doing that, but what I am fuzzy on is, what's the best way to monitor the SERPs for the keywords I am targeting. I know based on experience that if I just search google.com.au from here in the states, my results will be 'americanized' and may/probably won't accurately reflect what someone would see if they were search from Austrailia. Are there any good tools or tactics for seeing what searchers in the countries I am focusing on woudl see? Thanks! Jason
