Is my client's site penalized and if not, why are other lesser quality sites ranking with lower metrics than my client's?
-
Hello,
I'm trying to explain to a client, as to why certain websites that appear in the top 50 listings for a keyword are there when they don't have very good backlink profiles, and for this keyword, seems you need a high PA above 20 or DA above 25, just to page for page 2 - 3.
Running a full SERPs report, I have seen that backlinks to the page that's ranking seems to be as high of a factor as PA, followed by DA and overall backlink profile. Having a high score in one of these 4 areas seems to increase your ranking. However, going into page 3 and beyond, seems that things kinda take a weird turn.
After comparing the client's site to those ranking on page 2 I could see that all of them had better PA and more links to the page ranking for that keyword, so page 2 I understand why we don't rank on yet.
However, looking at page 3, I see that the client's site in question has better PA, DA, links to page and overall links to domain. Which leaves me to think we have a penalty that's keeping us ranking 50 or beyond. Since our metrics across the boards for what MOZ is showing as ranking factors. The more odd issue is that looking at the line graph, shows right at the time we implemented sitewide https our ranking for this one keyword dropped, while rankings for our other keywords increased.
Am I to assume it's a keyword density penalty? What penalties are there with a outcome of ranking limits?

Thank you for the responses, upon further investigation, I did a 5 year data grab and looked at the organic traffic in general, then found another graph that shows google algo updates in coloration to those monthly organic traffic totals and saw that Google Panda hit us a few times back in 2012 and we seem to never have recovered from it.
Which tells me we still have something going on with this site related to panda, but what doesn't make sense is one keyword we try to rank for seems to be affected while other keywords we can increase rank with.
As far as content is concerned, I've created a few completely new guides and even a handbook for users, content wise this site gives more to users than most sites, in fact, haven't seen other sites even have the level of helpful content geared towards the customer other than manufacturers.
Is it possible to be hit with a panda penalty for one keyword for ranking? Or would that only happen from an over optimization issue? Reason I ask is that is for our big keyword ( which is a two word phrase ) with an (s) at the end we're page 7, without the (s) we're page 5. But for our secondary keyword, that uses one of the words from our big keyword, we rank page 3 for both variations with and without (s).

It's always extremely difficult to diagnose exactly what's going on when you don't have any specific URLs to refer to. However, you mentioned that it appears to be one keyword or one particular page--not a lot of pages or all the pages on the site. So, I don't think it's a penalty on the site. Rather, it may just be some "over optimization" for that particular keyword or that one page.
What I would focus on is the anchor text pointing to that page. I would look at the anchor text of links to that page, and then to the pages that are ranking to see what the differences are. Also, while I do like OSE, you have to realize that all of these link data tools have different ways of crawling, and may not pick up on all the links. It's best to consult several different backlink tools, along with Open Site Explorer.

When you are competing with websites that have DAs in the 20s, superior page optimization, a title tag that elicits clicks, and even more verbose content can make a big difference in the rankings. These sites are competing on their page assets rather than on the authority of their domains or their backlink profiles. So, looking at backlink metrics might not be informative.
In these situations, I would improve my content so that it is far superior to the competition and then work on promoting the website.

Why do some sites perform great but show no data on the tool bar?
Hey everyone, Been a paid member for 3 days and this is my first time posting 🙂 I have a quick question about competitive analysis with the MozBar. I do not want to point out the exact website (unless that is something cool to do on this forum), but there is a site ranking for a single keyword in the local 7 pack in slot one, which is also slot one for the SERP entirely. When I go to look at the page in more detail, the MozBar is showing no DA, PA, anything at all, and the Open Site Explorer is showing no links internal or external. I know that the page has to have at least some of these elements populated in order to be ranking for a term this competitive, so why is the bar not showing anything? The bar works GREAT on other sites below this one. Thanks for any help!

Identify keywords certain sites target
Hello, I've been asked to identify what keywords a group of blogs/communities might target so that we might gain some insight for our own SEM purposes. It's been several years since I used SEOmoz's tools, so they have changed a lot. I couldn't remember if you had such a tool, but it appears you do not--or at least not that I am finding. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of such a tool where I can input a subdomain, and have a report stating which keywords are the ones the domain rates highly for. To be clear: I'm not looking for a traffic estimation or anything; simply a breakdown of what keywords a specific page or domain support most. P.S. I did a search on here for certain terms like "competitive keyword targets" and so forth, and saw no matching QA. I'm sorry if there is a duplicate! Thanks,

How do I find my client's real competition?
A recently acquired client keeps insisting that his major competitors are online fashion magazines, fashion news sites and insider bloggers but the site he owns is basically a fashion encyclopedia. It contains facts and catalogues and even a dictionary of fashion concepts. According to me, these latter are his benchmarks and not his competition His major competitors, according to me. are people competing on the first SERP pages for terms like "fashion history", "fashion icons", "fashion biographies", etc. Am I right? How do I convince him that these are his real competition. This is really going to determine the direction of my keyword research.

Local Real Estate Site vs Larger National Sites
Hello all, I am a local realtor that created my website with an idx feed. I am on page one but at the bottom. Question is how can a local real estate website rank better in the SERPS than the larger national brands? Any tips out there from those who have worked with real estate websites and seo? I'm trying to out rank the larger sites for my main keywords. Thanks all.

How can my site not ranked on easy keyword while it currently ranked 1 on difficult keyword??
The site in question is http://ikt.co.id The site is perfectly optimized (or even over optimized) for keyword "Bikin Website Murah" (in Indonesia it means "develop an affordable website") currently if you search on both google.co.id AND google.com, it ranked on #10 (on google.co.id) and it ranked on #7 (on google.com), and both term only return 1.3 million results I have A LOT OF pages that started with 'bikin website' , or 'website murah' ... there are a lot of them, and i have had a lot of backlinks on those pages too (have been manually building a lot of links, starting from creating a tutorial article and blog submission and many other way) .. the site has been perfectly optimized for that keyword For example we have http://ikt.co.id/blog-category/bikin-website-murah-promo-terbaru.html (for newest promotion) http://ikt.co.id/blog/bikin-website-seo-murah-discount-40-sampai-31-juli-2011.html (for discount 40% promo that lasted untill 31 juli 2011) AND YET, if you search on google.co.id for keyword "2000 likes facebook" , our lone page that i created when our facebook likes reached that amount, RANKED #1!! , and please let me tell you this term return 400 million results++ (on google.com this keyword ranked #19, on 500 million results++). And let me tell you it take that SINGLE page (which has absolutely 0 backlinks) 2 days to ranked #1 .... and her brother if you searched "1000 likes facebook" also show similar result (though not better then the sister) How ?!? and Why ?!? , i dont understand this at all.... my domain does not contain any keyword, they uses the same engine and yet that lone pages which have absolutely no backlink ranked so well on a very competitive keyword, while my Target Keyword ranked poorly.... And what is even more bizzare? "Bikin website murah" might not rank good, but "bikin website" ranked better x_x ... arghh i dont get it... why my site ranked poorly on easy keywords and ranked high on difficult keywords :(( .... Why I am not smiling because those easy keyword is actually my primary keywords 😞

Keyword Ranks reported by SEOMOZ don't match actual searches
SEO Moz reported that various keywords I was tracking were not in the top 50 results on Yahoo or Bing, yet when I did a Yahoo or Bing search for those keywords (from multiple computers and not logged into any Yahoo or MSN/Bing account) I found the keywords easily. What's the scoop?
