Need help with home page on site
-
Hello! Thanks for reading in advance!
I've got a relatively old site (12 year old domain) that has experienced a drop in rankings specifically for our home page.
Some of the key terms that I'd assume we would rank well for are:
"expedite us passport"
According to SEOMOZ, our on page optimization receives a C for the termr. also, the root domain and page have decent links, etc.
However; looking at Google (logged out and in incognito mode in chrome), a page on our site http://www.passportsandvisas.com/passport/index.asp ranks well and our HOME page isn't listed in the top 50 or 100.
THis is the case for a lot of keywords we used to rank well for.
I would have thought our home page would have at least outranked an internal page.
Any thoughts would be very, very helpful!

"I would have thought our home page would have at least outranked an internal page."
A site's home page is designed to pull in traffic for those who want the general idea of the company / website, while the inner pages offer more optimized content.
For example, when I search Google.com for "auto insurance", the first result is http://www.allstate.com/auto-insurance.aspx rather then the allstate.com home page.
Ideally, each page targets a single keyword. Your site is not based on a brand but rather keywords. The keywords you have chosen are "passports and visas". That is a particular keyword phrase.
A quick glance at your home page shows it is not optimized. A few points:
1. Your domain name is "passports and visas" but you are trying to rank the home page for "expedite us passport". If you were trying to rank your home page as #1 for "expedite us passport" with a keyword strategy, you would want expediteuspassport.com. To be clear, I am not recommending that approach but rather following the approach you have chosen to its logical conclusion.
2. If you wish your home page to rank high for "expedite us passport" then your ideal title would be along the lines of "Expedite US Passport". Instead you have a title of "Expedite US Passport Service & Travel Visa Service"
3. You mentioned one of your inner pages outranks the home page for the term. Well, the inner page title is "Expedite Passport Service : Fast New Passport Renewal". The breadcrumbs show the page as "Expedite US Passport Services". You are cannibalizing your own SEO by having multiple pages compete against each other for similar terms.
In summary, you either need to invest some time learning SEO or hire a professional. If this is a site you are starting and are on a limited budget, you likely have more time then money in which case you can start with the Beginner's Guide to SEO. If this is an established business then I would recommend seeking professional assistance.

Hello,
Few directions
1. IP Canonicalization - not present
2. Social impact ... really low (only 4 G+1)
3. Your position (6th in google.com) for keyword "expedite us passport" is for the page http://www.passportsandvisas.com/passport/index.asp
4. Many of good places are images not text containing keyword (H1, H2 ...), like "Looking For US Passport .... - image
bullet list below ... image, In my opinion it is a best place for main slogan in H1.
5. keyword stuffing in meta description "Expedite US passport and travel visa service : Expedited US passports ( new , renewal, lost, child ) : Nationwide Service" ... it is not a description ... it is stream of keywords
Other (low impact on SEO) but also important:
No mobile css ... but it has low impact
Increase Text/HTML ratio
delete keywords tag (
no language description
no microformats, Geo Meta Tags ... etc
no feed
You can spy competition:
http://visahq.com - best one and others http://us-passport-service-guide.com, http://itseasy.com, http://travisa.com, http://abriggs.com, http://passportvisasexpress.com
and check what they have especially http://visahq.com
And also ask the question who is your client? (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/passportsandvisas.com#)
female 45 - 54, connecting from work ... Whether a website is attractive to customers?
Regards,
Marek

Home Page Being Indexed / Referral URLs /
I have a few questions related to home page URLs being indexed, canonicalization, and GA reporting... 1. I can view the home page by typing in domain.com , domain.com/ and domain.com/index.htm There are no redirects and it's canonicalized to point to domain.com/index.htm -- how important is it to have redirects? I don't want unnecessary redirects or canonical tags, but I noticed the trailing slash can sometimes be typed in manually on other pages, sometimes not. 2. When I do a site search (site:domain.com), sometimes the HP shows up as "domain.com/", never "domain.com/index.htm" or "domain.com", and sometimes the HP doesn't show up period. This seems to change several times a day, sometimes within 15 minutes. I have no idea what is causing it and I don't know if it has anything to do with #1. In a perfect world, I would ask for the /index.htm to be dropped and redirected to .com/, and the canonical to point to .com/ 3. I've noticed in GA I see / , /index.htm, and a weird Google referral URL (/index.htm?referrer=https://www.google.com/) all showing up as top pages. I think the / and /index.htm is because I haven't setup a default URL in GA, but I'm not sure what would cause the referrer. I tracked back when the referrer URL started to show up in the top pages, and it was right around the time they moved over to https://, so I'm not sure what the best option is to remove that. I know this is a lot - I appreciate any insight anyone can provide.

What needs to be done to tell google my site has moved /changed
Hi everyone, I have a site, which I have re-built on a temporary domain, so that my main ecommerce site can still run.. I have noticed that google has already crawled my temporary domain. The only problem is I now want to transfer the new site back onto its proper domain (www.ourbrand.com). I have changed some of the URL structures of the new site so realize I will need to do re-directs relating to the same domain, but will google get confused that another domain used to have my new website on? I don't plan on using the old temporary domain again and wondered if I need to tell google in some way it was used just to build my site on? Michelle

Why do they rank the home page?
We are trying to rank for the key word Motorcycle Parts. We have moved up to page 2 over the past couple months; however, google is ranking our home page not our http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/s/49/61/Motorcycle-Parts page that is for motorcycle parts. We are working on internal linking to help point the right signals too. Any other thoughts? ( we have new content written to put in as well we just have to wait for an issue to be fixed before we can put it in)

Duplicate Page Title for multilingual wordpress site
Hello all, I have received my first crawl reports and I find a lot of errors of duplicate page title. In the wordpress site I use the qtranslate plugin in order to have the site in 2 languages. I also use the Yoast SEO plugin in order to put titles, description and keywords to each web page. By looking deeply in the duplicate page title errors I think I found that the problem is that every web page takes the same SEO Title for each language. But I am not 100% sure. I tried to use some shortcodes of the qtranslate plugin like the following ABOUT [:en]About in order to indicate and give different titles per language for one web page but that doesn't seem to work. Does anybody here has experienced the same problem as me? Do you have any suggestions about how to ressolve the problem of the duplicate page title? I can give you the URL of the website if you need it to have a look. Thank you in advanced for your help. I really appreciate that. Regards, Lenia

I am trying to correct error report of duplicate page content. However I am unable to find in over 100 blogs the page which contains similar content to the page SEOmoz reported as having similar content is my only option to just dlete the blog page?
I am trying to correct duplicate content. However SEOmoz only reports and shows the page of duplicate content. I have 5 years worth of blogs and cannot find the duplicate page. Is my only option to just delete the page to improve my rankings. Brooke

Is robots.txt a must-have for 150 page well-structured site?
By looking in my logs I see dozens of 404 errors each day from different bots trying to load robots.txt. I have a small site (150 pages) with clean navigation that allows the bots to index the whole site (which they are doing). There are no secret areas I don't want the bots to find (the secret areas are behind a Login so the bots won't see them). I have used rel=nofollow for internal links that point to my Login page. Is there any reason to include a generic robots.txt file that contains "user-agent: *"? I have a minor reason: to stop getting 404 errors and clean up my error logs so I can find other issues that may exist. But I'm wondering if not having a robots.txt file is the same as some default blank file (or 1-line file giving all bots all access)?
