Does subdomain (or sub sub domain) affect analytics data of root site?
-
We self-host our public website, but over time have also added subdomains onto it that are not public and are for internal or even client portals. I am seeking advice as to whether those subdomains affect the analytics data (self referrals, visits, bounces) of the public site that I am tasked with analyzing. I feel that it does skew the data but need to build a solid case to move the public website to a new domain, so as to leave the existing one in tact with all of its subs.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. The guide on setting up tracking across multiple domains was helpful to learn how to filter referal traffic. Unfortunately in this case there is a combination of subdomains with tracking code and also others without, as they are intended to be internal. I am hoping to prove whether having so many is even in some small way negatively impacting the root domain. "Tracking IDs are the unique codes that you're given when you create a Google Analytics property, and look something like "UA-123456-1". Any page with that tracking ID, regardless of the site it's on, will send data to that property." Source
So basically, if you're using that same tracking ID across all subdomains then yes, it will be skewing your data. If you're unsure, the easiest way is to view the source of the page and search for UA- . You'll see a code something like the one quoted above; if it's the same on all subdomains then there's your problem
Your options are to either remove it from the subdomains you don't want to track or check out Eric's guide on how to how to set it up correctly.

Does Universal Analytics auto generate events?
Hi Mozzers, I have been noticing for one of my clients that there are thousands of events generating which I never added a code snippet for ga('send', 'event', 'button', 'click', 'nav buttons', 4);. The code I am seeing instead is following the syntax **PDF FILE NAME.**I don't even use Tag Manager. So are these auto generated? Label names of files aren't great though so I still believe that adding that piece of snippet _ga('send', 'event', 'button', 'click', 'nav buttons', 4);_can still bring some added value. Do you think it still does? Thanks!

Mismatch between analytics and webmaster tools
Hi, I've noticed that the Queries report in analytics gives a completely different answer (for impressions, clicks, CTR, Avg. position) to webmaster tools. What gives? Which would you use? Thanks, Amelia

Subdomain tracking in GA
Hi Moz community. Wonder if you could help us out with a baffling Analytics issue. Are there any reasons why the _setDomainName() function in Google Analytics wouldn't track across subdomains correctly? We have been seeing visits to a subdomain come up as referral traffic, even after implementing the right tracking code. Would be interested to hear everyone's thoughts on this. Thanks in advance.

Google Analytics and DNS change
Our new alumni application is going be tested at domain uva.imodules.com . We are going to collect traffic data with a Google analytics account number UA-884652-XX. So going to uva.imodules.com/myPage.html would send its data to Google Analytics with that account number. Then when it is ready for production we are going to just change the domain name of the application and switch the DNS over to dardencommunity.darden.virginia.edu . So going to dardencommunity.darden.virginia.edu /myPage.html would send its data to Google Analtics with that SAME account number. Aside from having the testing domain data in the same profile are there any other issues/problems we may run into?

Multiple Domains in Webmaster Tools
Our client has four domains all redirecting to one domain. aquatron.info, www.aquatron.info, and www.aquatronhardwatersolution.com are all set up to redirect to aquatronhardwatersolution.com. I would like to make sure that we are getting the most link juice and that they are set up correctly in Google Webmaster Tools. Any help would be great. Thanks!
